Shannon Lucas is a fucking beast. He plays every song (live and recorded) with a metronome. Never strays off beat once. The only trigger he has is his bass drum. His drums ARE quantized. The reason I know this being every band that plays metal (TBDM, Miss May I, August Burns Red) wants their sound to be perfect. Thats all quantizing does. It takes the best hits and reproduces them, giving every snare, tom, cymbal etc. hit the same resonance and tone. I quantize all my tracks :)
@Cranfillr check out Gene Hoglan (new fear factory, death, strapping young lad, deathklok) he's a very very large man, WAY bigger than this guy, and SLAYS the kit! one of the best extreme drummers of all time.. i'm a very very large man myself and play drums, so i gotta stick up for my own :)
no trigger on snare. just kicks. you can see the mic jotting around the side of his highest tom pointing at the snare. anyways, he stated in a couple interviews that there was NO sampling or quantization done to any of the drums. now whether you believe him or not is up to you. but i will tell you that i have met him, he's from my hometown, and ive seen black dahlia three times. trust me he's pretty sick.
he doesnt actually trigger his snare. there aint a trigger on his snare. they might replace the snare afterwards. but that isnt triggering. drum replacement fool.
I'm actually positive he played those songs perfect without any quantization, and the kick AND snare are both triggered using drumagog because I have both kick and snare triggers in my drumagog. They just use creative EQ and compression to give them the sound they have now. It doesn't make him any less of a drummer, its literally impossible to have every hit cut through with speeds like this. Its not to improve his drumming as much as it is to improve the sound in the mix.
look closer, the toms and snare are miced. and he runs an alesis dm5 for his kick, even live. and its true that only the kick is triggered and that they wanted a live sound this time around.
Sound replacing is also very popular nowadays. You dont need triggers, you just lock the tracks to the grid and you can replace or add triggered sounds to the recorded ones.
to all the above shit: EQ and compression go along way. If the drummer is already consistent with high velocity/dynamics then a compressed snare even further normalizes the hit as "strong" ...
