  • It's not the publisher or author of the eBook that is saying you can't view the eBook on any device other than an iPad. It is the eBook distributor that is applying that use restriction.

The publisher & author don't give a hoot what device you use to read the eBook. They just want you to buy the eBook & not violate the copyright.

When was the last time you bought a paper book from a book seller who tells you that you can only read that book while wearing the special glasses he sells you?

  • The way to defeat DRM and restrictive use licensing, it to stop buying such products.

Instead, buy the CD, DVD or paper book. They cannot legally stop you from selling, lending, or giving away the CD, DVD or paper book you purchased.

  • Many people seem to confuse DRM with the restrictive license that the DRM enforces.

DRM is merely a system (typically involving encryption) that makes it harder for you to violate terms of the use license.

But even if the product were sold without DRM, you'd still be legally bound the restrictive terms of the use license.

They're not selling you the file or other container that holds the digital content, They're only selling you a license to use the digital content.

  • DRM is the death of old style gaming, and DRM is unreasonable honestly. 'Access methods that are per time period biases' is not a fair/intelligent argument for or against DRM, since you never buy any specific item and thus no ownership arguments, just access arguments.

What the issue is DRM is unethical and so is pirating, but I'll back the pirates first because There is far less sharing, even 'legal' sharing and things are suffering. The everyday consumer is retarded and will accept shit.

  • It's amazing to watch the internal struggle between his inner tech geek and apple iFan tendencies.

  • I agree with Chris 100%

  • "i can do the stuff they allow me to"

    what a fucking tool

  • Chris is a faggot and cant handle this conversation

  • hey chris what does drm mean?

  • @Dxternator Digital Rights Managment, if you buy somethin on iTunes you can only play it on a iPod/iPhone

  • I have to watch a 3 minute ad to watch this video? wth

  • @guysseriously They already put one use extra content codes in some 360 games so that the second hand purchaser gets a little bit less of the game, and has to spend MS points to get that content back. That's the publishers/developers clawing back some of what they lose through preowned games, right there.

  • When will they put DRM on console games? right now console gamers are free to sell their games, exchange with friends without any worry of DRM. PC games used to be the same before DRM came along.

If they add DRM for console games we will see all those 2nd hand game stores shut down. =(

  • DRM is evil it does not stop pirates it only hurts consumers.

Honest consumers are forced to turn to cracks as the pirated item is far more usable then the DRMed version.

There's a saying if you treat your customers like criminals they'll become criminals or move to different suppliers.

  • pirates are the best

  • Sounds just like an Apple spokesman. "I digest content in an on demand capacity", "I have no want, need, nor desire to store those videos", "I dont know if 90% of the Galaxy really cares." All his statements incliude the word "I"... him... not everyone else. Well, I care so I guess Im just one of those idiots from the 10% who likes to store his content for later use, without having to rely on some media site to charge me for use, or take the videos down after time, right?

  • @MCArchangel777 Agreed 100%. Just because you don't use your freedoms doesn't mean that you shouldn't have them. Just because you don't use Linux doesn't mean that you shouldn't be able to use your iPhone on it. Chris is taking the perspective of not caring because he doesn't use his freedoms.

  • @MCArchangel777 well then u have to pay up! if u wanna store the files then go ahead, but ur gonna have to pay the publisher for having those privileges. if u dont like having to pay extra then dont buy it

  • I agree with Dilan completely. Netflix sucks because I cant use it on linux.

  • @travisman26

    that sucks.

linux is definitely better than windows.

luckily, they have it for mac os x. I was worried about that when i bought my mac, but it works.

  • Is it just me or did the guy say his name was Dyl - NOT Dylan? Right at the start of the video.

  • I think its funny that he says DRM is fine because he can access what he wants, but he complains that his dvrs dont work together. That is the problem. IMO drm (and closed source software) is great as long as it does what you want and doesn't break, but that doesn't happen.

  • @theiceman1972 You're observing with blind eyes. Microsoft and Google aren't the only players in the game. I doubt Google or Microsoft has any say over what happens to FreeBSD, Ubuntu Linux or whatever operates on the Sony Playstation series. Think about it some more... Microsoft didn't just talk about it years ago.

  • I would prefer to pay for physical media.

  • People dont like DRM now, just wait until OS's and the software we use on them become DRM only. The new Google OS is the beginning of the DRM computer take over. Soon with no internet access you wont be able to use your computer at all. Microsoft was talking about this years ago and people did not think it would ever happen. Now Google is going to make it happen.

  • whats DRM

  • @AppleAddict35 digital rights management

  • @AppleAddict35 Satans son

  • @AppleAddict35 Digital Restrictions Management.

  • this whole video made me want to yell "WHY WOULD I BUY SOMETHING TWICE"

  • The new ubisofts drm is the worst because you have to be online all the time for single player games and even if theres a brief disconnection from the internet you lose your progress. I mean i like to use steam but you can atleast go offline with it

  • I think what Chris was trying to say is that DRM is

  • @darthirakli Posted the previous comment by mistake. Anyone knows how to remove it?

  • I wish the isps could stop people having such easy access to illegal torrent sites. They are the portal to the internet so they should have more responsibility to stop their customers obtaining material illegally.

If the isp could stop the access to illegal content in the first place then there would be less need for drm.

Studies have shown that a lot of people who download music spend more on concerts and physical media bcs they are able to do more sampling.

    bbci player, etc rock.

  • lmao, i hacked so much games and programs that i probably owe people over um..... say somewhere around 1 grand .... Actually i going to some research and see how much and owe and post it on my channel lmao...

  • Thing is, a lot of people don't have the money to vote with their feet. Chris is really arguing the "Ah, just let market forces decide line." Well actually no. The truth of the matter is the most effective form of protest vote has been piracy. 'Breaking the system' as he puts it has forced the corporations to produce better, cheaper, more easily available products - without that check on the market, the companies would continue to collude in a frequently unusable and expensive environment.

  • Eh I'll stick to my torrents.

  • this is what apple does

  • Hackintoch 4 ever lol

  • 7:00

  • true,

as long as I'm granted unrestricted access to product that I've paid a SMALL fee to obtain, I could care less.

"I get what he's saying, but.....

....As long as you're not gonna take, redistribute, resale, and/or "do as you please" with it why complain?

    It's the manufacturer's proprietary product!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Chris is right!

    peace!

  • well but the point is, that you want choice how you use the media, like i want use all my media over one player, now spotify allows that,i pay that monthly fee to use its own huge catalog of music but now i can add my own mp3 library on there too, and soon it happen to videos too.

  • assassins creeed 2 had a pooping drm which scuked, internet connection constant at al ltimes, so when your net disconnects, your save data is kabosh! Piracy is bliss...

  • I hate DRM too.

I get to download free music unlimited for a year from Nokia. Good to play on the computer and the phone. NOTHING else.

Not trough my PS3, even via media server...

You're screwed if you decide a old computer to be THE computer...

  • I've always been a little on the fence on the issue. I'm in no way a fan of DRM but when people use DRM as an excuse to steal stuff I can't agree with that either. So I'm kind of in agreement with Chris. The iPad doesn't hinder content consumption... The choice is ours.

  • DRM is the Spawn of the alumminati

  • may i be ignorant and ask...what the hell is DRM?

  • @JacknifeCreations Digital Rights Management. For example, if you bought an ebook from the Kindle store, but wanted to read it on a Nook, you would not be able to do so, because of DRM. If you buy an MP3 from iTunes, but one day decide you want to listen to it on a Zune instead, you will not be able to do so, because of DRM. DRM forces you to consume content on ONLY the devices which support that DRM. People don't like it because they say "I bought the content, I should decide how to consume it"

  • @HealyHQ Thanks! that helps a lot!

  • @JacknifeCreations No problem. Happy to help. :) It does go a little deeper than that, but there's only so much I can say with the character limits on Youtube comments. Haha! :D

  • If content creators provide convenient, fair priced and quality product most people will buy it without DRM. A good example of this is Apples iTunes store switch after Amazon started to sell DRM free music. The music industry finally woke up that customers will pay for convenience and quality. I am not sure that this will translate to other industries with higher priced product though.

  • DRM on PC games really piss me off!

and.. Splinter Cell Conviction has DRM.... -.-

But i still want it, it looks so cool!

  • there is a 3rd option buy it legally then go steal it

  • he is not aware of the great problem of DRM in pc gaming

    thats way more critical

  • 90% of the galaxy does care!

  • I buy my music to listen to them when ever, and where ever I want. So if it is not made to be used, learned and enjoyed, why do it in the first place? DRM does not affect on piracy - Pirates capturing ships have a long way to go until DRM has any effect on them. Heck, it doesn't affect on any "software pirate" anyway. If it can be played, it can be copied.

  • one of the main pet peeves with DRM is allot of content has expiration dates. (along side encryption and compatibility)

  • make your dam product worth paying for and you wouldnt have to worry about piracy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @satoshi0076 Heh thats where ubisoft is failing. Heh.

  • @satoshi0076 I think it's lower your prices to a reasonable level, and make the product worth paying for, and you'll sell it!

  • @satoshi0076 In fact, this is the main reason why PC software sales are so low. (I am talking about games specifically).

  • Chris is strictly rational in his analysis of the technology market. Great video!

  • DRM is a needed evil folks.

  • why doesnt he use the new mac?

  • yo tengo la noticia calientica pero ezte intenet mio ez demaciado lento yo queria mandartela pero ze temaba ezto:1% completed (347 KB of 33.48 MB)

    Estimated time remaining: 6:38 hr.

  • I agree with Chris 100%. Piracy is not the way to go.

  • DRM is a problem for the consumer not the pirates.

  • @Goth47 so true, i got screwed with drm, thx to crackers i got to enjoy my product.

drm has always hurt the consumer, so true

  • Chris, one thing you mat be disregarding is the concept of "brand loyalty," in which individuals are too loyal to a brand to jump ship. If the brand loyalty is strong enough, DRM can survive. It will be disliked, but it can survive.

  • im not sure how drm works, but if i buy something, i own it... that's how capitalism works right??

  • @elnegrobembon If only it were that simple

  • OH i care about DRM. I have so many different devices, I don't want to buy content again.

  • drm.....cough..communism....cough....what? huh?

  • @nunabody do you know what communism is?

  • If music listeners would stop stealing music and such then these companies wouldn't be using these half-baked attempts to stop it. Piracy hurts everyone even you dumbasses that think art should be totally free, fuck you.

  • No that is the new one. He got a bigger sticker for it. You would know if you watched his live feed.

  • this is funny to watch. you can see the internal conflict between apple fanboy and anti-DRM lol

  • I like how you word things out.

  • PNY

  • who cares, global warming is a bunch of shit anyways

  • DRM isn't as evil as Windows Vista

  • dude i think that apple iss a fucking joke

  • These are the videos that Chris should have been making all along. 5 thumbs up!!!

  • It is amazing how some people think that just because they buy something they can then do what ever they want with it. Systems like Napster hurt artist much more than record companies and publisher, as they get paid first and the artist last.

  • where's your new macbook pro.

  • @lilspark3000 This video was probably made before he got the new MacBook Pro. He just released the unboxing of his MacBook Pro before this video was released. The way he uploads his videos is not chronological. Apparently they don't come out right after he makes them, and he just releases the most interesting videos first.

  • @Programmer7 Oh, that's unexpected. I always though it was in chronically order. Anyway, can't so see it in his new video's.

  • @JUNDAAZNGEEK Yes you are right

  • The system is set up so the Rich gets Richer and the Poor gets Poorer. We have all these financial issues because we are all trapped in a system of Debt and Slavery.

When we all learn that all Money, all currency digital, paper or metal is Obsolete and we must Evolve past it, then we can all move forward.

All Digital Content must be available and accessible to all people of the world.

People who Share turrents on the web is a Revolution, too bad we can't share the Planet yet.

  • @bigsteelguy

I mean anyone can print they're own Paper money, The Federal Reserve does it every single day, and WE play this Game of Exchange, Debt and Inflation. IT's all it is----- A GAME, we can unite and stand against the Game or play the game and be self servants of the rules to the Game and to the Controllers of the game.

    It's time FOR WAKING UP

stretch your minds a bit, be freethinkers. Question Everything

Boycott the system as much as possible

  • @bigsteelguy Yes, everybody's heard this already. I'm afraid you and your rhetoric are a bit late to the party.

  • drm not bypassed only by pirats.. if you need to reinstall the os.. and the store is fuckig renew the drm protection on my all music..

i will never buy again.. just bypass the drm because i buyed it before...

  • Thanks for posting my call :)

  • @ViciousDave4Life LOL, you're a complete moron. DRM doesn't do anything to pirates it ONLY inconveniences the average consumer.

  • @ViciousDave4Life Fuck you. I will always download for free. You'll never stop us. Art is going back to patronage. Read book retard.

  • @ViciousDave4Life I agree with Adaub7282, DRM is easily bypassed by the pirates, it only screws the average user experience.

  • @ViciousDave4Life

OK buy a Car. GO to the first service. They says hey thats not your car and we dont give back for you. Go home on foot. Or HERE NOW buy a NEW car.

  • @ViciousDave4Life Dave, DRM Fails most of the time.

Spore is loaded with DRM and my friend bought the Full Legal Copy and He hated the DRM.

He reinstalled it on His new Computer (the old computer isn't used at all) and it was easier for him to torrent it and used the serial with his purchased CD and used the Binary that he downloaded from The Pirate Bay and his legal key.

DRM is Bullshit and it fails.

  • god chris is such a "i know it all". if the PUBLISHER does not want me to have the content... to hell with them ill go to a torrent site.

  • @gix0 its interresting that somewhere allong the middle of the talk he changed its focus from DRM to the publishers, ohh and BTW the publisher do not own the content they just gain allot of money from it, the artists "own" the content.

  • @gix0 eat a dick you're a common theif

  • @MrROTD You call me a thief sir but at least iam civil and honest, as the video says if you dont like it... put your foot down. i choose to put my foot down wherever i want not where other ppl think i should. So if you dont like it dont do it but do not insult me because you think its "stealing". good day to you sir

  • @gix0 Fuck yes to this comment. @MrROTD YOU eat a dick, it's not theft if you're not taking anything away.

  • @gix0 ... You're paying for access, not for a physical copy. Going to a torrent site and getting a physical copy which you don't have rights to is illegal. If you do, and you get caught, you'll get hefty fines... enjoy that o_O

  • you cant go argue with chris. its scary o.O

  • Publishers stink

  • ok, the guy's argument of collecting comics is a myth.

It takes too long for a comic book to become worth anything and that is only if it is in pristine condition. That money would be better invested by buying gold or stock.

Seriously, who wants to wait 30-40 years meticulously maintaining a comic book collection to see if something becomes valuable?

for instance, Xmen #1 is worth about $4.50 in near mint condition. Hardly woth the wait.

  • I think if you buy a dvd or music file you should be able to put it onto any computer you want to. their should like 50computer you can put it on more than enough for the avg home user. than have a business class one for someone that needs more but you pay more. as for net flick they neeed that on the iphone and i am with you on that i will pay 10buck a month to have the file on thier server to watch it on my computer ipod friends tv ect.

  • @CoyleTech1 China couldn't do shit. All the computers China uses were made in America. If China is so advanced, then why does everything break that was made from there. I mean seriously, you have it for 5 minutes and it breaks. China's the one making the dollar store toys.

  • I hate APPLE but i love their products. APPLE is like PEDO with the best lollipop ever. ;)

  • i dont get it when he says "i vote with my feet" can sum1 fill me in?

  • @jeff9559 hat means that if you don't like something, don't use it.

  • Comment removed

  • But you kept butting in saying its not fair its not fair. DUDE you need to stop and listen.

How about this... Lets say you bought a music CD and it said that yiy could only play it on your home stereo and nothing else. no iphone ipod or ipad or any other device. How would you feel??? Pissed right. You feel you own that CD and you should be able to play it on anything. This is what the guiy was talking about. And your saying its not fair...

DUDE lay off the alcohole and listen.... Part 2

  • Dude you need to chill out and stop drinking. You need to listen. Go back watch this sobar and listen to how much you did not listen to the guy. Thumbs up if you agree with me.

This guy was saying that if he downloaded something then he should be able to play on his stereo or dvd player ipod discman whatever. he paid for it. The only thing i disagree with him is putting it online for everyone else to grab for free.... Part 1

  • stupid ppl calling on the live stream thinking they're talking to Chris Pirillo celebrity and acting all smart and stuff when they arent.

I like seeing them getting owned by chris' beast analytic mind.

  • The Audio On Your VIdeos Needs To Be Boosted Chris! I can barely hear you on my laptop speakers. : (

  • I love scrubs and why do you keep saying "Vote with your feet" What does that mean!!!!!????

  • @kindahokey if you dont like it walk away

  • @MrVerdict but what does it mean? ? is it an inside joke? wutev

  • What is a DRM? O-o

  • @Codester145 Digital Rights Management

  • @Codester145 Digital rights management, is a generic term for access control technologies that can be used by hardware manufacturers, publishers, copyright holders and individuals to impose limitations on the usage of digital content and devices. The term is used to describe any technology that inhibits uses of digital content not desired or intended by the content provider.(WIKIPEDIA)

  • Wheres the new macbook?

  • @ConorHarrington If you look at the date it says april 7

  • @Nanotech11 Maybe hes taking a break. I know he traveled somewhere just yesterday and he was tweeting about being on an airplane.

  • @daniel87980 My comment was directed at someone who was asking where his new mbp was so I said the video's from april 7 (before he got his mbp).

  • @Nanotech11 yeah but in his live stream its his old 1 aswell

  • @ConorHarrington The video was made before he got it. Filmed on the 7th, it has just been uploaded just now.

  • my phone talks too lol i think we have the same phone lol

  • The issue with the Marvel comics is Apples fault? Talk to Marvel about that.

  • awesome. this was a great video. about DRMs and such

  • ...you'll know it was there when something happens, and it does, and someone can not subscribe any longer and then all the things that you have paid for in the past suddenly disappears when your "library" or "bookshelf" was controlled by a subscription. If you can "keep" an audiobook, redownload and replay it after closing an Audible account for instance we are unharmed.

  • Complacency is part of the problem. Apple is swamping you with DRM but Chris going Meh means that only opens the door for more DRM. And whats worse, @happyquails is right. You dont own a thing on your Apple. They decided what you can and cant have on there and you have to pay them for the right to look at stuff.

If apple made cars theyd have no hood. Youd have to remove the body to change the oil, and you could only do it at authorized Apple shops. Theyre oppressive.

  • kooooooooooooooooooool

  • I dnt care what Anyone says DRM is EVIL!!!. Buying Digital Music should be like buying a CD, I should be able to move it from place to place, give to whoever i want, and copy it as many times as i want.

  • Where is his new macbook pro?

  • @afg96 no look at the date at the top

  • Well the man behind the whole Marvel app thing is Joe Quesada. And I'm not shock about him using DRM on this App. And he's knew for being an ass hole from time to time. Like his fight with J. Michael Straczynsk telling him "It's MAGIC...We don't have to explain it" For saying there is no 10 year old readers in comics or telling a bloger "So... "what are you fucking going to cry about tomorrow?" And he said that on an Interview on the New York Observer.

  • I hate that iTunes movies have DRM. Which means I can't burn them to a DVD and play on my 55-inch TV... unless I want to buy a AppleTV to get iPod component cables. It's bullshit! If I'm paying for a digital movie that cost MORE than an actual DVD I can hold in my hand, I should be able to burn it to a DVD if I choose.

  • after all these years of open office you NOW have to pay 5000.00 for the odf plugin. HOOORAY Oracle! bla

  • gtrst26@thedevl123 wow thanks for pointing that out haha.

  • Great vid, hope you get more questions like this, very interesting topic, pay out the 'wazoo',don't support them at all or be a pirate, its a very interesting topic.

  • I don't want to pay for content that I can't actually physically burn to a DVD and hold in my hand - that just sucks.

  • chris is awesome!!!!!

  • DRM = Digital Rights Management

  • CHRIS SMASH!!!!!!!!!!

  • I thought that the Marvel app uses CBR/CBZ, not PDF???

  • American are such cry babies... you at least get service, we don't even get to download a single thing from iTunes... I AM WILLING TO PAY... FFS... But I can't buy anything from iTunes other than "APPS for iPhone".

I can't access hulu, can't access netflix, can't access itune store, can't access rhypsodi, can't access pandora...

Seriously you're crying about DRM... FFS stop being jerks and put yourself in shoe of 5.4 billion people outside US.

  • @Greeniemaxx Sounds like you live in like outer space or something. Everyone else in the world has access to all those things. If you're not happy in outer space or wherever you are, that you're not able to get to these things because of your area. Why not use a proxy?

  • @AppleHack23 Yeah really? I think you live in a closed box where you don't know rest of the world can't access NetFlix streaming, Hulu videos, Pandora...

Why not use "Proxy"? Because Proxy will not give me American IP address to access these services, nor will it give me American Credit card to buy these services, nor will it give me American mobile number to receive SMS from Pandora app.

  • @Greeniemaxx You're an idiot. There are United States proxies fool. And you don't need an American credit card. If you want to access American features, then move to America. By you calling Americans idiots isn't going to help you. And let me tell you, America is not idiots. We can beat your country any day. We are the ruling country in the world. Nobody can beat us. You want to be safe, you move here. You want netflix, you move here, you want hulu, move here, you want freedom move here.

  • @Greeniemaxx heh, never knew that, well i don't really use hulu and pandora or netflix, anywho applehack is defining the selfish average american, and that makes me sad, but hey what can ya do about it.

  • frostwire

    get it.

    be careful.

    shut up.

  • @Greeniemaxx There is an app for pandora and netflix???

  • @thisithis Yes there is a Pandora app for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad and there is a netflix streaming app for iPad.

  • DRM is a pain on the pc, but for the iPad I don't care too much.

  • So knowledgeable this guy. I appreciate the fact that you are willing to share your knowledge for free. Thanks Chris!

  • Why does everybody who rings Chris, all sound the same? Must be an american thing.

  • @faralith Thats racist.

  • Chris has reshaped his thoughts to fit around Apples agenda without really noticing. If thats not being a fanboy, then I don't know what is.

  • I don't think it's as much a step back as it isn't a step forward in regards to DRM. Nothing has really changed between the previous model and any current model that the iPad brings.

  • ipad ftw

  • chriss you rock

  • where is your new macbook?

  • @gtrst26 look at the recording date

  • why do you need tv when you have youtube?

  • 2 pages of comments already?! This was posted like 18 min. ago!

    Wow, you are famous!
