Stick tricks were really cool in the 70's and 80's and they're still cool in some competitions especially marching comps (although I think judges frown on it)

Other than that, it's not something I ever cared for, but that's just my opinion.

Practicing stick twirling is just as much a waste of time as practicing drumming. You either practice drumming to show off or because you enjoy and want to bring the best out of yourself. It's exactly the same with things like stick twirling. Some people do it because it looks cool (most, actually) and some do it simply because they enjoy it. That being said, I personally don't think it's truly worth it to spend more time stick twirling than drumming, so don't get me wrong.

I'd give anything to have his rhythmic skills and coordination, but after listening to his works and the collaborations he has done I think he is great, a god, but his playing sounds a bit cold and mechanical. Almost robotic. I guess its because he's a freelancer musician. today's music requires inclination towards electronic kits and sounds (take his crash cymbals: they have almost no pitch at all).

I prefer warmer jazzy sounding drummers. just personal taste.

In his instructional videos, he mentions that stick tricks are just something to "spice up" the performance and not something to do if the actual playing suffers. He has fun doing it. I can agree with you on one point. That the music shouldn't suffer because of "stick acrobatics." But there are drummers, and then there is Thomas. At his level, he can flip the sticks and still drum circles around 95% of all drummers. But, I could care less if ANYONE has fun flipping the sticks no matter what music they are playing. Jazz, Rock, Pop....if the music is cool, then so be it.
