yeah, he did the double bass way back before anyone did, Also James and Mustaine liked to alternate pick most of their riffs and that's probably why the idea of going just as fast on the bass drum was invented.
lars is not a good double bass player i dont hate him cause of napster like most do but i dont think hes the best drummer ever i couldve done his double bass when i first started lol like i said i dont hate him but i dont love him
@DDDRUUMMINIT Yes but back in the 80's when Lars started playing double bass, the concept was fairly new, at least at the speeds that he played it at. He's not the best drummer, but remember when he first started out, there were no drummers that did that before him, he was essentially starting a trend, obviously not single handedly, but still he was among the first.
@chestus12 agreed but some parts like in one some people made videos strictly for that double bass riff and it wasnt that new and im like why anyone could do it except for people who didnt do double bass of course but yeah he did make double bass quite popular and was pretty good in the 80's for someone in the 80's lol not sure if that made sense or not lol anyway i get youre point
@DDDRUUMMINIT I get your point as well and see where you're coming from, yes what you said makes sense lol. Nothing he did was impossible you're right, including the DB in one. Some ppl do hype him up a bit too much, I love the guy and want to play drums because of him, but I'm not going to just limit myself to his techniques; guys like benante and lombardo have tons of things to offer
Lars changed his double bass style, he used to do it with the heel down, now he does a heel up which I think its slower and hard, he used to have a second hi-hat to get the things a bit more easy now he has a china? He should kept the hi-hat...
clearly Lars can still play double bass... makes me wonder why he doesn't do it consistantly at a lot of live shows... seems like he only does it if there's a DVD being produced lol
I wasn't aware you had to be the best in order to be in a band. I guess Lars should just quit because he isn't the best. I mean, there should only be one working drummer out there in the world, the best one.
Lars a " weak" drummer ?.. Come on now he definitely not weak ... The dude has STAMINA and plus style .. He has influenced many drummers ... For those who think he's weak get your ass back there and play just one thrash metal song by metallica ...bitches
It really amazes me how people seem more interested in following the masses when it comes to Lars and just complain about him instead of thinking on their own. Don't you realize what his drumming, as well as the rest of Metallica, has done for every single fucking metal musician out there, as well as those that you say are better? If it weren't for Metallica, today's metal scene wouldn't be nearly as awesome as it is, an much of that credit goes to Lars.
I think some of you need to understand that drumming is NOT all about speed. It's about groove. Sure, there are plenty of drummers faster than Lars. Lars has a groove though which is difficult to match. Back in the early 80's, he was great at keeping the groove of Metallica. I will give another example and thats Bonham. Bonham had groove coming out his ears! Thats what made him great.
Oh....and that clip from The Metal Hammer fest in the early 80's...Lars is on it!
@EverthingUnofficial U think all those guys would be where they are today without Metallica They are Metal gods I agree there music these days is not the heaviest metal but they still are making music they like and fans will always enjoy METALLICA
Commenting on somebody's drumming is like commenting somebody's girl..if you don't like it then it's youre problem not his or her...everybody is different..
I've always loved Lars drumming and this comes from someone who thinks Tomas Haake of Meshuggah is a fucking God on drums. I love technique and precision. But you can't deny some of the fuckin' crazy shit Lars came up with back in the day,
Travis Smith or Nick Augusto can destroy lars... hell even Joey Jordison can destroy him... and I don't like slipknot! Or Francesco Paoli, or Mario Duplantier... honestly, there so many much better and more talented musicians out there that I have honest trouble giving metallica the time of day.
@EverythingUnofficial Holy shit man, don't you realize Lars is an entirely different generation of drummers than the ones you listed? If you compare Lars to his predecessors he plays a LOT of double pedal patterns. Before Lars, Lombardo, Benante, Portnoy and those guys, double bass pedals weren't that common at all. Not even Peart uses double pedals that much, and he can surely play whatever he feels like playing. It's a quesion of generational differences and taste.
I agree with EverythingUnoffical.....Lars is wayyyy down on the totum poll of metal drummers. If you are holding him up so high, I really think you need expand your metal horizens....A LOT.
@08Revelator I didn't say I was holding him up anywhere. This is one video about one drummer. Its the best of Lars...read the fucking title. The title doesn't say "Lars is the best, way better than all your favorite metalcore drummers. Please insert comment about how much you disagree". If you don't understand what Lars and Metallica have done for metal by now, then you never will. Please move on
@literallarry2011@EverythingUnofficial I agree 100% with literallarry, also there is what a 20 year difference between then and now? What they play/played doesn't require blistering double bass such as Kollias, but Lars inspired thousands of drummers, one being Travis Smith. He inspired Travis and many others to be like him and more, which is why i consider Lars very influential to the drumming community
@literallarry2011 totally wrong. you were holding him up by replying to EverythingUnofficial saying that he's young and dumb. you're young and dumb if you think lars is that great. lars has done a lot for metallica by composing. that doesn't change the fact that he is a very weak drummer. get your facts straight.
@literallarry2011 lars is one of the horsemen of the apocalipse, which not means he is the best !!! but tallica wrote kill em all and after that everything changed ...
@08Revelator While Lars is....less than stellar these days, it would be ignorant to deny the sheer influence the guy had on drumming and metal as a whole.
@08Revelator now tell me, who had a larger influence on metal music. lars or a random good death/black metal drummer. also note the fact that super fast and complex drumming wouldn't fit in metallicas music.
I never said anything about good death metal drummers. And the only reason you dont' hear drumming of a more talented nature, is because what you hear on Metallica albums is the best Lars can do ...period. If he could do better, he would.
@08Revelator I listen to all kinds of rock and metal music, not only Metallica. I'm just saying that he should be respected only by the fact that he influenced a ton of other musicians.
Yea you're right. I know nothing about metal drummers. And Lars clearly is SOO much more lalented and more influencial than Van Williams, Mike Portnoy, Steve Zimmerman, Dave Lombardo, Raymond Herrera, Mike Mangini, and Steve Bolognese. Just name a few!
I feel so fortunate that I am not like you, STUCK in fan worship of a very mediocore drummer just because of his name.
Please do yourself a favor and buy The Scattering of Ashes by Into Eternity and learn something.
@literallarry2011 No, it is because Lars is a self-involved drummer with bad technique and no musical feeling. Everyone who saw the movie "Lemmy" knows that: Lemmy is on stage with Metallica, and the play "Damage case", a shuffle, so it is triplet based. And what does Lars do? He plays a straigt 8th note groove, while everyone else is shuffling! He is so narcissistic, he doesn't even recognize it! It is unbelievably disturbing to listen to it and just sad ...
@literallarry2011 i love metallica AND lars, but he is nowhere near the best, hes an intermediate metal drummer, innovative, but intermediate. If you want to see greatness go check out terry bozzio, George Kollias, or--if youre looking for inovation--Mike Mangini
@literallarry2011 one more thing. Ive been a Metallica fan for 20 years, danish as Lars is, and i can honestly say, i woulden mind them getting a better drummer. Even back when i refused to believe he was a bad drummer.... somehow i always knew it was true. EverythingUnofficial is from a technical factual standpoint, absolutely right. Seems your statement about young and dumb, really is a statement about yourself? My Theory is you can spot the kids by statements just as yours.
@EverythingUnofficial Please don't disrespect lars. all those drummers u mentioned especially joey jordison were influenced by him. just cuz lars is old right now doesn't mean he cant play drums anymore. if u look back to lars youngest years, he is WAY better then drummers from right now.
@EverythingUnofficial also i dont think its about being the most talented or best drummer. his drumming style fits metallicas sound perfectly. it defines metallica, as much as james hetfields rapid downpicking rhythm or kirk hammetts ridiculously amazing solos define metallica. it works perfectly as a package. plus i think the fact that theyve been around for almost 30 years is testament to their cohesiveness and skill as a band, lars included.
@EverythingUnofficial It's funny the drummers you mentioned. You think those guys are so good? Do yourself a favor and watch a solo by Buddy Rich. There is not a rock/metal drummer that can touch him.
@EverythingUnofficial Lars didn't never get any teaching with drums so you can't compare him to those guys. But one thing is sure, that his composing and arraring skills are better than those guys.
@EverythingUnofficial What makes Lars better than the others is that he actually writes the songs with Hetfield and that Lars drumming is so unique on each song that you can recognize a song only by the drums. Theothers have skills but so average drumming.
@BrockyMocky Not to mention the musicians in the core scene have absolutely no theory skills at all. NONE of them absolutely NONE of them know nothing about using other genres to compose solos, and riffs. Fuck your stupid lame music, I'd love to see any Core drummer use classical, jazz, blues, and metal drumming techniques in one song. Your musicians lack any creativity at all, not only that, triggers? Really? Fuck using triggers.
@BrockyMocky Not to mention the musicians in the core scene have absolutely no theory skills at all. @BrockyMocky Chuck Schuldiner (Someone you will not of heard of because you're an ignorant asshole) was one of the top 3 guitarists to ever play in Metal History, sadly he died at a young age of 34 during his prime. And your shitty core bands rip off his music, (he was the Godfather of Death Metal)
Fuck off you poser cunt, no one cares about your stupid scene, because scene is dead, bands like Bring me the Horizon and the rest of your shitty core bands can fall into a bottomless pit.
So why the fuck can't he do that when he's playing "Dyer's Eve?" It's never been a question as to whether or not Lars can do double-bass---he's just so fucking lazy he chooses NOT to, especially lately, and that's what pisses people off.
@mlody969 Just because all of Metallicas albums including St. Anger are so much better then what ever the fuck slayer is putting out ther doesent mean that u have to get cranky about it.
One of my favorite moments is that one on Cunning Stunts for "Fire", with the pyros blowing up and all that.
Although the audio seems a bit "soft" not as in volume, just a little mushy, but then that's always been with Cunning Stunts... a bit weak and hollow... but still a cool recording.
Dave Lombardo.......hahaha.....please grow up, man........metalcore drummers like Matt Greiner (August Burns Red), or Jordan Mancino (As I Lay Dying) puts the good old Dave to shame.
The only word you rock/metal guys know is "gay". But it doesn't really matter, everyone knows, that the metal scene is pissed off at the metalcore/deathcore/emocore scene, because they are much superior to the grandpa metal bands, both in technical and songwriting skills.
For proof check out some August Burns Red, or Belie My Burial stuff, because i suspect you don't even know metalcore.
@BrockyMocky Metalcore bands and Deathcore bands haven't got shit on Technical Death Metal bands. Gene Hoglan, Sean Reinhart, Richard Christy put all shitty Core band drummers to shame.
Deathcore bands have very un-talented fuck wits, they play the same shitty chords for the boring, un original riffs, over use breakdowns, and not to mention the vocals fucking suck, I mean really, they sing about killing themselves over girls, utter bullshit music.

He plays a straigt 8th note groove, while everyone else is shuffling! He is so narcissistic, he doesn't even recognize it! It is unbelievably disturbing to listen to it and just sad ...
HelgaMariaSchneider 1 month ago
@literallarry2011 i love metallica AND lars, but he is nowhere near the best, hes an intermediate metal drummer, innovative, but intermediate. If you want to see greatness go check out terry bozzio, George Kollias, or--if youre looking for inovation--Mike Mangini

@literallarry2011 LOL, dude, Lars, as a drummer, is kinda shit, as a business man he's a genius.

damienkurast 3 weeks ago
@literallarry2011 one more thing. Ive been a Metallica fan for 20 years, danish as Lars is, and i can honestly say, i woulden mind them getting a better drummer. Even back when i refused to believe he was a bad drummer.... somehow i always knew it was true. EverythingUnofficial is from a technical factual standpoint, absolutely right. Seems your statement about young and dumb, really is a statement about yourself? My Theory is you can spot the kids by statements just as yours.
damienkurast 3 weeks ago
@EverythingUnofficial Please don't disrespect lars. all those drummers u mentioned especially joey jordison were influenced by him. just cuz lars is old right now doesn't mean he cant play drums anymore. if u look back to lars youngest years, he is WAY better then drummers from right now.
X01xol 1 month ago

MrBassmaster72 4 weeks ago
@EverythingUnofficial Lars didn't never get any teaching with drums so you can't compare him to those guys. But one thing is sure, that his composing and arraring skills are better than those guys.

@EverythingUnofficial dumbass haha if you knew something about metal history specially thrash you wouldn't be saying that fucking dumbass! hahaha
mr4METALLICA 3 weeks ago
@EverythingUnofficial What makes Lars better than the others is that he actually writes the songs with Hetfield and that Lars drumming is so unique on each song that you can recognize a song only by the drums. Theothers have skills but so average drumming.

lars is one of the best drummers of all time but nowadays !!

Half of the people that say Lars sucks are just nine year olds who see other people saying that he sucks so they can feel cool.

Gotta love when Lars DOES nail the double-bass.

@BrockyMocky lol metalcore is gay and all the drummers mostly use drum machine so shut the fuck up fag
Pallikarva96 1 month ago
@Pallikarva96
BrockyMocky 1 month ago
@BrockyMocky Hey man I think August Burns Red is badass but they wouldn't even be here without bands like metallica and slayer...so show some respect
literallarry2011 1 month ago
@BrockyMocky Metalcore bands and Deathcore bands haven't got shit on Technical Death Metal bands. Gene Hoglan, Sean Reinhart, Richard Christy put all shitty Core band drummers to shame.
Deathcore bands have very un-talented fuck wits, they play the same shitty chords for the boring, un original riffs, over use breakdowns, and not to mention the vocals fucking suck, I mean really, they sing about killing themselves over girls, utter bullshit music.
ohgoditsjames94 1 month ago
@BrockyMocky And death metal drummers like Inferno an Gene Hoglan put shitty metalcore drummers to shame. And Jazz drummers put them to shame.
Sorry kid but metalcore isn't very high up there.
