The BBC make and fund some of the best television in the world and they do it on a tight budget. If ITV is how you want your entertainment to go then I'd recommend suicide as an alternative to paying your TV licence.

Need advice. Had a call from the TV licence inspector this evening, despite my child was told not to open the door to strangers..the man said he was from parcel force he had a letter to delivered! then asked where the parents were, after my kid said that the parent are at work, he asked for my name and surname and my sweet naive child told him, he happily give her the letter for me.

was he allowed to ask my kid for personal information or he should have come back another time? help advice etc.

But what really frightens the BBC, as well as the entire British Establishment, is the emergence of an identity and culture that could unite the English and see English people demanding independence from the United Kingdom. I have noticed a pattern: The BBC dislikes the English, and seems suspicious of the Welsh; but it positively loves the Scottish and the Irish, and this often leads to anti-English and occasionally Anti-Welsh broadcasts. I suppose this occurs because the Scottish and Irish are seen as victims of the 'nasty old English'; also, many BBC workers claim to be Irish or Scottish, even though they are as English as a cup of tea, and seem to develop an anti-English grudge as a result

Shows such as 'Live at the Apollo', 'Mock the Week', 'Family Guy' and many Radio 4 comedies such as 'The Now Show' are often Anti-English. It seems like comedy is the BBCs preferred weapon-of-choice for promoting its Anti-English agenda, but it will also use drama or so-called 'factual' documentaries; for instance, 'When the Immigrants Went Home' was blatantly anglophobic.

Perhaps I should not use the phrase 'hate the British people'. But many people who work at the BBC are highly middle-class London-based workers who hold liberal, London-centric, left-wing, pro-EU, and anti-patriotic views, which puts them odds with the majority of British people (i.e. the English) - who are naturally conservative, anti-EU, and mildly right-wing and patriotic.  So the BBC shows its contempt for English people in comedy shows or documentaries.

I feel great not watching that much television anymore. If people I know gossip about celebrities or what they saw on tv, I don't participate in the conversation, because it's meaningless and they got nothing going in their own lives.

Solution is to stop paying it and just use TV for watching DVDs/playing consoles... When you get out of the habit of switching on the box every evening and zoning out, your life and mind get better ...but maybe that's what the government is afraid of...

I'm American, and as much as people over here say that TV 'sucks', it's actually MUCH BETTER here than across the pond. Here, you ust subscribe the cable services such as Verizon (The old Bell Telephone Company) and Comcast. Our BBC is PBS, and some BBC programmes are shown over here. All PBS does is occasional "pledge" drives. Our TV is entirely funded through adverts. Many classics air over here plus many cable channels have some really good shows. The're only about 60 UK channel, vs 100 here

The licence fee does not go to the BBC it goes to the gov. The old BBC does not even exist it was taken over by BBC Worldwide LTD in 1999, the 50 years of old BBC TV archive is just the perfect make money machine, they did £120 Billion GBP in global sales last year, but NO dividend was ever paid to the UK licence payers that are kept in the dark and well harried with psychological control from a talking puppet sofa TV advert, demanding yet more cash from the UK public or jail. I have tried again, but it's still the same crap. I even told them I'd remove the receiver but they say as long as you own a TV you still have to pay, because you might adapt it back to receiving again.

Either way you can't win, they're just plain arrogant.

Are you aware that you're paying for a TV licence needlessly? Whoever you spoke to at TVL lied to you. If you're just using your telly for games and vids, you're doing nothing illegal. You don't even have to phone them to tell them the situation. Just ignore them, keep using your telly, and bin any letters they send you. TVL rely almost entirely on people not knowing their rights and that TVL have no more legal or regulatory powers than a double-glazing firm or local builder's yard.

Yeah, a monitor can be used as a TV, but again, as long as you don't then you don't need to pay. You just have to ring up and tell them that while you have a TV it is only being used for games and pre-recorded stuff (DVD's, tapes etc), they'll send someone round to check (although they haven't for me yet) and then thats it.

If you're not watching TV then you don't need to buy a license :)

Even if you tell them the score, they often still send out threatening letters and send inspectors round. Give them absolutely NO information or engage in ANY correspondence with them whatsoever. Also, never sign anything and never let them into your house. Their threats and attempts to intimidate can be safely ignored.

I can imagine that this does happen, but as of yet I've not had anything. I've left the place I was at at the time to come back home. And in the months I was there, after I had phoned them, I never got one letter, phonecall, or visit.
