it could of been an error, but i doubt it, there are a few hidden things in lost related to future episodes, eg. when sawyer was being attacked by a shark when he was on his little raft, when u see the shark underwater swim past the screen, if u pause it correctly u can see a darhma symbol on its body, so it could be the black smoke monster that attacked them when they crashed :D
i tihnk it is smokey cuz it comes from the forst to the ngine then over the top towards sea so if it just went bakcwards thne it wud only go in one direction not two and it cudnt be 2 pieces cuz there at different times

ogcourse its a CGI error, the producers stated in an official podcast that it was bad editing on their part. its actually debris, but the error was that it was moving backwards. so imstead of flying away from the engine, it flyes right into it.
It's a CGI timer. It let's the CGI artist quantize with the real FX. It's not imitated motion blur, it IS motion blur, because it works at frame by frame. Most of the explosion you see is CGI, but some of it is real. It's let's the two of them sync the real FX and the CGI FX together.
They just didn't edit them out in some of the final copies.

No, this isn't fake. However, I believe LOST producers have confirmed that what you see is actually a stray piece of CGI plane debris -- basically an animation glitch.
