Kenny is wrong, most people in japan wouldn't understand you. They learn it in school but it's like kids learning spanish in high school. No one ever actually becomes fluent.
@StatuesBleedingGreen TRUE TRUE TRUE~ Many do know it but don't want to speak in fear their english isn't good. And forget older people. They don't know at all. I don't know why people think everyone speaks english over there. the signs are in english in the subways and trains, but some of the signs. I did always find someone to ask or I did figure it out myself. I live near NYC and it made the transpotation system in Tokyo easy to understand. Same thing.
@shadowace421 When I went I didn't know anything. I had Japanese friends. But for two days I was alone. The subways and trains are in English for the most part. And you learn phrases. I learned the phrase for: This is the ______stop. So, you can do it.
this is nice

Well, they speak Japanese because that's the national language and they're used to speaking it but they also know a good amount of English.
