  • Hi I played this game In the original arcade machine in the 90s and aint had nothing about it with the arcade machine game, This one was really dinamic and exating, when the airplain did crash with the walls and floor this one start someking and burning because the damage and in the tunnel worlds the way was serpenting up sidedown

  • am i the only one who notices how AWESOME genesis packaging is?

  • The arcade version of this is a dazzling, sea-sickness inducing laser light show. When I first saw this pathetic conversion way back, it greatly contributed to my SNES envy. It didn't even look good in the magazines.

  • Now that Mark's reviewing arcade games, he should look for the arcade version. It was a real technical acheivement for 1988 or 89, which ever year it came out in.

  • This should have been a better conversion than the master system version.

  • thumbs up if youre here because of his starfox review!

  • You mean Burning Force by Namco.

  • The original arcade one is sick bastard, the whole thing done with tricky 2D elements, but kicks the real 3D butts of some todays' stuff!

  • Kinda like Space harrier, but it's a ship instead of a person! Reminds kme of another game from Konami that I can't remember, where there this gril on a floating speed cycle, and u shoot lots of different weapons!

  • Damn, I've never seen him this depressed during a review, thank god for our high-tech chimney sweep though.

  • Damn, I've never seen him this depressed during a review

  • Actually, if you look at Afterburner II, Super Thunderblade, and Space Harrier II, it is clear that the Genesis CAN do very good pseudo-3D shooters.

The real problem was not that the Genesis could not do such a game, but that this title was rushed through development and released at an Alpha stage, so that the Genesis would have one more arcade port available to compete against the newly released SNES.

You are right in that the Genesis can't do 3D, but it can do fake-3D like Space Harrier.

  • I liked this game. At least this game was WAY better than Super Thunder Blade. I like the music in this version better than the arcade original.

    -KT

  • Now i know not to get it. I saw it in a game store and i thought it looked cool, i was wrong.

  • Compared to the arcade version, this is pure garbage. However, it's otherwise a great shooter for the Genesis, pushed it like crazy.

  • This game sucked so hard.

  • I can't believe he didn't mention the kick ass drumming, it's the best part of the game!

  • Air conditioning system? What? It's the Death Star.

  • There's one thing that this game did really well, and that's introduce the two best BGMs for the Genesis ever: "Beyond the Galaxy" and "Defeat."

  • Great review! I used to love the arcade version of this game, and evan tho i know this version pailed in comparison, i still enjoyed playin it with the Sega arcade power stick. Infact i have orderd a saturn just to play a truer version of this game!

  • lol, i just saw the arcade version of this, it totally craps all over this genesis port. seriously....NO contest. The stages actually look like they have terrain and features due to the amazing things sega did with sprites and it really gives the game an amazing sense of 3d. I wish i could have played this in an arcade at some point. It probably would have completely blown my mind.

  • Should have been released on the sega cd :(

  • Well, the arcade board has 3 cpus like the one the sega genesis has, there was no way for this game to be even half as good as the arcade. It was a bad idea from the beginning. Even lesser arcades like Space Harrier or Outrun (these have 2 cpus) are still a pain to port to the genesis.

  • @Imgema atleast it's not as bad as the genesis version of After Burner. (the 32x version was better but still no where enar as good as the arcade version)

  • Looks like a recycle of Space Harrier II

  • I saw the arcade version once. Beautiful work.

At least they kept the soundtrack SOMEWHAT intact. Otherwise, this game is simply pathetic.

  • Good review, really helped me out. Thx!

  • I think I'll take Space harrier and Super Thunder Blade.

  • agreed on that.

  • I can't believe it. I love this game!! Sure the graphics could use some re-rendering, but I mean really. Look at the gameplay for once!! I know, Galaxy Force 2 is no Panorama Cotton for sure, but it is definitely not a chimney sweep!

  • This was a very poor port, and never should have been ported too the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive. The Sega Saturn port is almost arcade identical. Even the Amiga port is more close to the arcade version than this port. I agree with the host/reviewer, it definately should have been converted into a 2D or overhead shooter rather than keep the arcade "3D" feel.

  • I think the genesis could have handled it but for some reason it just didnt happen that way.

  • It's called lazy coding. ;)

  • @Chaniyth If you had any idea how much poorer the Genesis's hardware was from the arcade, you'd be amazed that this game runs on this genesis and looks so good.

  • @Chaniyth Hey, sega made mistakes sometimes, but when this came out, they were at their prime. You have to respect the ones you can even if their not good. Hell, this games music kicks ass, but with the release of the CRAPtastic Sonic 4, you wont be able to see these anymore.

  • @Chaniyth i just wonder why it doesnt seem like it though (i don't know anything about this game.).

  • Good review! I couldn't agree more about the Galaxy Force 2. I used to have this for my Genesis, I was very disappointed, due to the fact that it was no where near the quality of the arcade version. The arcade version's tunnels do not look like "airconditioning ducts" where as Genesis version's do like you said. Thanks.

  • Maybe it was because i was a little kid but I loved and still love this game. The music is FANTASTIC if you ask me. Sure it looks like youre flying through air conditioning ducts but i guess my imagination wouldnt allow me to think such things. The 3D and space that the environments portray as opposed to TF3 feels pretty vast and wasnt terrible 3D like Sonic 3D blast (i didnt like it). The crappy part is there is only 1 weapon. The bullets do NOTHING. Other than that I love it lol.

  • If the enemies were harder and they put seeking lasers like the hunter from Thunder Force and things like that, this game would have been amazing.

  • I have to agree with you. I found Space Harrier 5 years ago and fell in love with it; I was really happy to find out about this game when it came to Wii's Virtual Console. The lock-on missile and health systems are really cool. This game has a lot going for it, I think.

  • How is this different than Afterburner 2?

  • erm... I have this game for my Mega Drive II.

    What's a genesis? = \ Is there any difference?

  • Genesis is the american version of Mega Drive. Well it's only the name for some reason.

  • oh ok, I thought so.

  • I think that the colour is a bit diffirent. And your console has red buttons, Genesis has black.

  • Oh. And I'm talking about of cource Genesis 2/Mega Drive 2.

  • Yeah, I actualy have mine in front of me now. Red buttons. nice.

  • Yes, because not only did the arcade provide hardware scaling, it also provided *hundreds* of sprites with far more colors than Genesis could do. All powered by THREE 68000 CPUs at 10 MHz each.

  • The Y-Board that powered the arcade

Galaxy Force II was massively more powerful than the Genesis. Even with the added power of the SegaCD with its 2nd 68000 CPU and decent hardware scaling & rotation, was still well short of the Y-Board. Hell, even the SATURN could not run this game perfectly, as the Saturn version is barely 30fps.

  • This is actually HUGE improvement versus the ugly original galaxy force game. This guy should review that one just see how awful it is in comparison.

  • you mean the one on the Master System?

Anyway, if you want to see a steady improvement from Galaxy Force II port to Galaxy Force II port. check out these versions in this order:

    1. Genesis (this video)

    2. FM Towns

    3. Saturn

    4. PlayStation2

  • haha, yeah. I forgot the first one was on the SMS.

  • should review starfox 64

  • If you want to experience the most comprehensive, custom emulated/optimally coded version of Galaxy Force Arcade, then do track down the Japanese import-only SEGA Ages PlayStation2 disc, which features not only GF-Arcade+Remix, but the various 8&16-bit versions of Galaxy Force(including the SEGA Genesis/MegaDrive version which you've played for this Video Review). Absolutely definitive, and one of the best SEGA Ages releases, next to the Fantasy Zone Collection!! Retro-tastic Review dude!!

  • game hasn't aged very well

  • Its an okay game. One major problem I have is that the lasers have practically no use. Why even have them when 90 percent of the time its the missles that land hits?

  • lol hahaha at the comment of 'AC vent system' and 'doing the job of cleaning out the enemy vent system for them' lol.

This is a good review... it constructive unlike many of the reviews I see on Youtube.

  • You mean like "this game is shit because it's old and there's no HD or normal mapping! Why bother when the Master Chief" Yeah people are dumb and most have lost sight of what makes a game good.

  • The tunnels actually do look like vents.

  • oh man! after druling over japanese megadrive imports in the 90s, i ran to my loco videogame shop in santaana to grab doubledragon2 for the megadrive for $20 that i had my eye on but no!!! they sold it the day before, so i had to get this game galaxyforce2 for megadrive, it was $10, i ran home and filed down the opening corners so it can fit in my usa sega gen. i thought this game was good there was a lot of glitches but i had never seen the gen do things like this before so i was happy

  • Sega Genesis has the biggest library of quality games as for the gameplay/fun - simply because it HAS enough hardware resources for a 2D game to be done well.... beginning with very fast CPU up to the dedicated VDP capable of 2 scrolling playfields and 80 sprites... I only wish there was a 3D system that would be capable of processing ANY 3D gameplay in 60fps like Genesis does...

  • any is hard, but a PC can run most 3D games in 60 FPSs, actually it can run all of them except for Crysis (at full) and GTA 4 (which is just horribly programmed) some newer ones may not perform at full, but last years games and older will run at full. for the Best PCs ofc.

  • a PC cannot run ANYTHING at constant 60fps whatsoever simply because PC is nothing but an unoptimized bunch of shit that has no right to be compared to any console including RRoDed Xcrap 360.... do me a favour and think before you post... the only console up-top date that could so-so pump out some constant 60fps 3D rendering engines was PS2 due to its total revolutionary non-PC (!!!!) hardware design with 2560-bit data bus bandwidth, good morning!

  • you gotta be kidding me, maybe it's my FPS meter thats wrong, but it says 59-60 FPSs in MOST games, I never said all, but games like Half-Life 2, or any Source Engined game DOES run at 59-60, more if you disable V-sync, so don't give me that bullshit! PS2 didn't even have the same resolution that the PC does, or any of the earlier consoles, PS2s textures were 16 colors!!! the Dreamcast had better Textures, the only thing the PS2 was better on, was polygon counts!

  • PC, console, they all have their perks and downfalls. :\

  • Holy hell. Maybe you have a POS of a PC but on mine with Quake 3 for example I can regularly get a framerate in the 70s and 80s and doing a timedemo I've gotten excess of 200 fps before.

  • Yes, but you forgot to mention, the 2560-bit data bus of the Graphics Synthesizer in PS2, provided 48 GB/sec bandwidth! That is MORE bandwidth than PS3's RSX GPU has: 22.4 GB/sec!

It's hard to believe that PS3 actually WENT BACKWARDS in technology, in SOME RESPECTS, compared to PS2.

PS3 fucking DESERVES to be in LAST PLACE this-gen.

  • I am glad there are other people who say that their favorite game console is the Sega Genesis 16 bit. I loved the SNES, but the SG just has some awesome gameplay.

  • you are right on the money my friend.

  • Genesis have many classics!, I love this console.

  • @PatrickGuedes Yeah there are games that never get old.

  • Best to Worst versions

    1.) PS2 (it's *slightly* upgraded over arcade)

    2.) Arcade on 'Y Board' (original, 1988)

3.) Saturn (half framerate of arcade)

4.) FM Towns Marty (first decent version)

5.) Mega Drive / Genesis (crap)

  • Yes I know I left out the Master System and computer versions (i.e. Amiga, C64) since I was just listing the ones that play like or somewhat like the arcade.

  • Trust me the arcade version is in a completley different league to the poor Genesis version. Dude you need to check out the PS2 Sega Ages version to see and play this game the way it was meant to be!

The Genesis couldn't do it any justice owing to the massive differences between the Y Board hardware of the arcade game and the Genesis. The REAL Galaxy Force 2 is an awesome game!

  • true but i dislike a ps2 i think sony had stole the game market and reped it,whats good about today that was good in the past,we don't have games like shenmue or other good games anymore, sega dominated the game industry sega held it together as good in the underworld, nowdays people keep theyre eyes on theyre pc or other graphical suprmem stuff,i hat games like counterstrike or WOW totally dreadfull but thats what we get these days,i prefer a 1 hour game that doesnt keep you hooked days.

  • The Dreamcast had a lot of potential and deserved better, but it at least served as a swansong for Sega, and the PS2 is undoubtably a worthy successor. If anyone had to kill Sega off, I'm glad it was Sony. I utterly disagree with your point about Sony killing gaming or whatever. They may have lost their way somewhat with the PS3, but the PS2 was fantastic at its height and still has some good titles coming out.

Also, please work on your typing. It's hard to get one's head around it in places.

  • its fastly typed,it's like msn for me.if you can get the heads out of it it's good enough.maybe your're right i think sega killed it for themself but it depends on what gamer you are.your're perhaps right i think sgea did it for themself and that microsoft into the gaming market is more of an awkward thing then sony in the gameing market, the oldxbox plain out sucked, and i can't say any better about the 360.

  • I wouldn't say the original Xbox was a bad system. The controller was somewhat awkward (especially the Duke) and the console itself was huge, heavy and not very convenient for putting other things on top of it, but it still came out with all manner of good games. I've always thought that Microsoft were very lucky/skilled to get a 2nd place in the console war having had no previous console experience, and then Nintendo came behind even them, and they were veterans.

  • yeah bit true i geus,i enjoyed the xbox actually more then the cube, the cube was really a giveaway console and pgr2 and burnout 3 where fantastic, but the cube was just a big mistake by nintendo meagerly published and to much of the nintendo zoo on it and its games just are plain simple.

  • That cannot be denied. It has its gems like every decent system, but it simply fails to compare to the PS2, or even the Xbox.

  • true.glad they changed the subject and hope they keep it that way,as nintendo is like now they're on high hopes, the graphics may not be something to write home about but they are still worth mentioning, anyone knows a genesis looks like crap compared to neo geo aes, but hey some genesis game still pointed your're eyes out and showed stuff that wasn't in our minds,so yes the wii will have wow moments,it already had with mario galaxy.graphics arent a rule so it can be broken yet satisfieng

  • I concur.

  • heavy nova on the genesis, now that's a terrible game.

    it makes hate life.

  • great review Mark!!

  • XD, that GPS voice is hilarious.

  • Reminds me of Ecco the Dolphin:Tides of Time bonus rounds with different graphics... Raster Effects FTW!

  • i played the game

    it`s not that bad

    but space harrier is better

  • Classic Game Room HD winner and still champion

  • it was a joke. i was talking about the game, not the vid. oh well.

  • Yeah, the music was alright but the choppiness was so annoying.

  • Gotta love the chunky bass in the music.. kinda reminds me of Crusader of Centy's music.

  • Doesn't seem too bad. The flicker is annoying but its not something that us gamers didnt have to deal with back then, it was pretty commonplace in those types of games.

  • nice review! The game sounds and looks awesome!
