If anyone was wondering that pulley on the wall at about 6:30 is for a safety system that pulls the door closed and shuts the windows in the event a nitrate film catches fire but has been disabled since that theatre switched to being a safety film only booth.
FYI on most projectors the shutter moves at 48 frames a second while the image moves at 24 frames a second... or slightly less but don't get me started on that.
Hi I was a projectionist many years ago was apprentice for 4 years then qualified. Was chief for sometime then low wages took me away from job. Will always have sweet memories of my time back then from 1963 to 1968.What one guy said in video is what I thought for years. the projectionist is the last link in the chain of movie making and NEVER gets thanks or recognition. We had Ross projectors and Peerless arcs back then. Around 12 years ago the cinema I worked in was knocked down I cried then.
It's wonderful to see 'proper' projection still exists. I worked as a projectionist years ago, with carbon arcs and 2000' changeovers - that's a change every 15 to 20 minutes - which was great fun. I'd love to do it again!
My first job after leaving school was a projectionist, a very good job. Machines 50 years ago were a lot different than those of today. All the sentiments the guy's in the clip say I agree.
I'm just now gonna be starting up a job as a projectionist at a local theater called iPic Entertainment. Luckily enough, most of the screens have digital projectors. I'm afraid of the changeovers. I'll totally fail at those and ruin the gorram movie. I hope I do alright... lol
A good doc on the job but as a projectionist myself, the guy is not good at lacing up and running the film as when he turns on the motor you can hear the film not on the runner properly and snap.
Very good show! Best lighting and focus of any of these. Sound was too low. Thanks for sharing. By the way, they are set up for un-wed prints. Very nice.
Those are great projectors and the lenses are great!I have a setup like that but with a platter as well so i can run 20 min reels or from the platter.I love the curtains, you wont see that at the multiplex!
I'm going for a projectionist job right now! This was a nice look at the job, if a little outdated. The place I'm hoping to get a job at runs Vic 8's with platters. The terrifying masses of film that run all over the room lol
well call me lazy i have automatic change over lol but im starting to get pissed i wanna get my xenon bulb changed but im not fucking with it lol i threw one off a roof one tim talk about fun but dangerous lol big explosion
Pretty much accurate but i dont use the 6,000 ft reels i only use those to feed the film on to the platter those projectors he is using are about 30yrs old.
If the door glass with the script logo is original, those Simplex X-Ls shown in the video are 40 to 55-year-old workhorses. (The xenon consoles look to be Xetrons from the late 1970s).
Running reel-to-reel is -- excuse the pun -- the "reel" way to do it. Being able to run changeover is what separates a true projectionist from everyone else.
Thought you might be interested in an open call for short films; details are at http://wgbh.org/producingfortv. (Selected films will receive financial and editorial support.)
Lástima que no están subtitulados para los países que hablan castellano...

Great job! It's nice to know there is still plenty of theaters with film projection, as many theaters are switching to digital "Video" projection.

@starwars21 thats because digital is much much easier to use and film flickers anyway

The machine may be ancient but I still operate one like that too. Not every cinema has the money to upgrade, and not every cinema wants to either.
