  • After the announcer said, you made it number one, one of the singers with a guitar was still singing.

  • The Greatest Break up song of all time! Perer Cetera is the only one who can make this song!! I't brings back Memories of 84 and guess what - My X and I are Great friends still I just don't have the 2 kids and a fat husband LOL

  • How do you sing through your nose? Would love to see that!

  • @tmg1968

    Listen to ronan keating lol

  • Rock groups like this are rare but Peter was the group

  • I never get tired of watching this video, Jamie. If we only knew back in 1985 that this would be one of Peter's final CHICAGO perfomances~~Sad, but happy we have this video to enjoy. Thank you again and again for putting this together so we all could enjoy Peter singing a song that will always be a CHICAGO classic. Peter's voice is one in a million and always will be.

  • good video, i'm trying to find once in a lifetime, does anyone have that video?

  • Shoulder pads!!! the 80's were the new 40's??? LOL

  • Now this is what you call rare audio. Great find. Got to say I'm jealous of those who got to attend this show. Thanks for uploading!

  • This song rules

  • This may have been one of the last performances that Peter did with the band. It seems like the band is trying to transition the sound with Peter Cetera being there.

I saw them when they released Chicago 17, and it was the first time I had ever heard this song. They opened the show with it in July 1984. I was blown away. I was like this is great they should record it... Then it hit me Uh They did.

The band probably was not the same after Terry passed.

  • i would be gay, if i not say that its the best group ever !!!

  • Hey those pictures don't match the words. And crap, I was thinking it was in the key of Gb

  • By this time Cetera was so full of himself, there was no room left in the band for other egos!

It was good he left Chicago, when he did.

He was a big reason the band turned from an innovative Jazz/Rock band, to a syrupy MOR band.

Their best years were still the ones with Terry Kath, and even by their 10th album, I think Terry was very saddened by the direction they were heading!

  • Thanks looking foward to hearing it

  • This song reminds me of all the lovers

who have broken up. Of marriages that

have ended in horrible divorce cases totalling

millions of dollars - all over what?? GREED, POSESSSION .... the list is endless. but the worst

thing is heartbreak. Thats what makes me sad listening to this song. Having to remind myself of

all the times my relationships failed and now at 68

I'm still alone. "Spreading my love too thin" and "the illusion I chose to create" really ring true for me and I'm sure for others!!

  • i feel you phil... i do i know the feeling and damn it made me crazy for quite a while.....im not divorce but i fell inlove with another woman,, damn i thought it was gping all ryt but fuck it was a chaos ,, styill love her though but for now ive gort a family tro take care and its my responsibilty...the good thing about love just that theres always a secopnd chance..

  • CHICAGO GREATEST HITS 1982-1989 Song #9 HARD HABIT TO BREAK 1984 Chicago 17 BEING WITHOUT YOU IS ALL A BIG MISTAKE, INSTEAD OF GETTING EASIER, IS THE HARDEST THING TO TAKE, I'M A DRIFTED TO YOU, YOUR A HARD HABIT TO BREAK, SUCH, A HARD HABIT TO BREAK, I'M A DRIFTED TO YOU, BABY?!, ETC. I like that Song Ending.
  • YO, BEAVIS !!!!

He says "I'm addicted to you !!!

What the hell is I'm a drifted to you ???? that don't even make NO G/D SENSE !!!!!

  • My favorite of their songs.

  • My favorite of their "middle" period -- just before Cetera left. One of Jimmy Pankow's last great horn charts, IMO.

  • One of my top 5 favorite Chicago songs ever! No one did it justice like Cetera did. I love this song so much!

  • 1st hit they had written by outside writers. HIt #3 in Billboard.

  • es tema que marco algo muy inportante en mi vida alla por los 80' GENIAL.

  • CK, did not mean to offend you. I love what you are doing, keep on. Sorry I didnt read the description.

  • Yes..I saw the video with Peter and Michael Johns..totally Awesome!!

  • dosent anyone have the original video for this song on youtube? (not live)

  • Peter Cetera is Chicago and Chicago is Peter Cetera for me.. Though i was born on the late 80's but Chicago is a legend for me.. i adore their songs especially when Peter sang it.. and this song is the best.. perfect 10 from me!!

  • Peter is chicago , his voice is so unreal he simply cannot be replaced just like Steve Perry from journey simply cannot be replaced I will always stick by the most amazing 80's talent ever !!!!!

  • everyone can argue that Chicago is nothing w/o P cetera, but truth be told...They did quite well after he left, thanks to j Scheff & especially Bill Champlin-who by the way is 'the other voice' in this song...

  • Another thank you from me to ChicagoKid for posting this.........I love this video and music........Nice to see Peter over and over......

  • I remember the Actual Video for this Song. It had Peter Cetera siiting on a couch playing his Guitar.

  • Peter Cetera ... you are Hard Habit to break .. really i always listen to this song when ever i break with my man ..sooo emotional ..and gracious sadness

  • If you want to hear Cetera sing "Hard Habit to Break", look on youtube for him singing it w/Michael Johns/American Idol in the David Foster and Friends 10 city tour.-2009.... Peter sounds terrific and Michael Johns was a good choice for a duet partner. Many videos are on youtube, some better than others.Great to hear Peter sing this again. Saw 2 of the Foster shows- INCREDIBLE shows!

  • This is how the song should be sung....Cetera with lead vocals..........No one can replace that AWESOME VOICE.......THE VOICE OF CHICAGO FOREVER.........!! Great song...!

  • I totally agree Peter can NOT be replaced.!! Have a great day

  • Peter Cetera is the voice Chicago. Always has been, and always will be. Jason is always off key, and sings through his nose. Not to mention Cetera's superb bass guitar work. Long live Cetera !

  • @LRomero910 right on! no one else can do these songs like cetera

  • Peter rulz,Jason Scheff is okay, better Peter was the voice of Chicago.

  • Peter Cetera has a unique voice. This song is great. Very emotional for me, reminds me of my first girlfriend. Am i glad that's over , lol

  • I don't know man, it does kinda suck. hahaha just kidding. cool footage. my mom got me this tape when i was a kid, been a fan since.

  • Yes, Peter, you are a hard habit to break!! :):):)

  • Thanks, Jamie! Love seeing Peter!

  • C.K.,You are 100% correct in your conclusion...I dont think they understood your latest post.Funny..Keep them gems comin...

  • Right On! CK1969- how did you get all of this great Chicago footage? Did you tour with them or something? Thanks a million!

  • I thought I had some of the worst quality videos on the planet. This takes the cake!

  • if there no good mate y did you even listen then in e or watever. sad you are, sounds better on album some bands are recording artists, some are for the stage thats it.

  • It was a long time ago. I was only one digit out! One thing's for sure though. They're bloody miming in this video! ;-)

  • ps you are right about this performance, yes. I am comenting on their songs in general and lazily added my comment about E to more than one song. You caught me out!

However, I correct you that it only transposes at the end. The other chords you mention are just that: chords, not keys. This song is in F# with lots of naturals or C with lots of sharps, according to the choice of the writer.

  • DOES IT REALL MATTER, arronfromhastings,WHAT KEY THIS SONG IS IN?? Who cares?? GEEZ---JUST ENJOY THE FRIGGIN' MUSIC!! CHICAGOKID WAS NICE ENOUGH TO POST IT AND YOU HAVE TO OVER ANALYZE IT........NOBODY ON YOUTUBE CARES WHAT KEY THIS IS IN OR ISN'T IN !!

  • I have the album. It's Chicago 16. Every song is in E.

  • @aaronfromhastings

    You are a fucking idiot.

1). The song begins in F#

2). Chicago 17. Look it up

3). What You're Missing, the very first song on Chicago 16, is in the key of Bb. I believe Waiting For You To Decide is in E. Bad Adivce is F, etc. I didn't bother wasting my time determining the key of the other songs on the album, but perhaps you should learn something about music theory before posting moronic tripe here.

  • I don't read posts that begin with insults. You bad-mouthed f u c k w i t

  • Great song, but how can a band write everything in the key of E? I don't understand this.

Musical proficiency and vision requires knowing them all! To play in E alone with even minor ability you should know at least 3 related keys in my view.

It's quite tiring for the listener to listen to a whole load of songs in the same key too.

  • No the band fired Peter Cetera and since then they suck juts like Jouney getting rid of Steve

  • YES' Dear always uses this song as a memory montage right after a little break up, lol

    awesome song

  • Bill isn't all over the place in this one. He started expanding once his place in the group became more prominent.

  • Chicago is one of my favorite bands. The yonger generation is missing quality music like this. The future of music is scary.

  • I'm 17 and love this stuff and classics like Chicago...muzic NEEDS to get back to this kind of style, real talent; not the crap that pollutes the radio waves now.

  • Another stellar post from you, ChicagoKid.

And a great collage of our main man, PC.

  • i love the song

  • Reminds me of a break up!

still love this song though 17 years later

  • is peter cetera still on good terms with the original band?

  • I'm sure they're all civil to one another and polite. Chicago has always been a genuinely nice group of guys. But they've gotten older and have gone in different directions. They went their way and Peter went his. Plus Robert's and Peter's kids are first cousins so I'm pretty sure there's politeness if for no other reason than the kids' sakes. But as stated before they're all nice well mannered guys.

  • Thanks for the reply....If you have any more of that amazing stuff, let me know.

These are masterpieces....It must a been great to be there???????

  • WTF!!This video does not go with this song!

  • It doesn't go with this song thanks to WMG, who spend a lot of time and no doubt a lot of money, yanking these videos off youTube. We're lucky to have this one video. Warner Music Group is a perfect example of pretzel logic-spend all that money to keep people too young to remember seeing older groups play classic hit tunes and maybe...just maybe go out and buy them. Perfect bottom line sense! NOT !?!

  • No... I agree with you.....But it is still a live version, as far as the audio goes....And the video/pictures are from the same period too....Maybe even the same show.....But it is only to show something with this great audio feed.....Thanks to

Chicago kid 1969.....It must a been a great show ......

  • I seen them in Memphis in 05. Great show..but just wasn't the same without Peter.

  • one of the greatest songs ever written...the studio version ( vocals) is incredible! i think this song won a grammy...an era when it takes real talent to make it...

  • Bobby Lamm seem to have totally forgotten how to write hit songs.....Very sad.....We're far from 25 or 6 to 4, Does anybody....Saturday in the park, Skinny boy,Dialogue, Scrapbook,Take me back to Chicago....and all our favourites Lamm songs.....They are killing the name Chicago...Maybe intentionally.....????

  • He hasn't forgotten. And he's still writing. How many people can say they wrote half of a debut album-CTA-and at the age of 24? That album produced hit after hit...and sent them on their way and they've never looked back. Life goes on. They've chosen to go on-get through the tough times and appreciate the good times. McCartney still writes. He and Lamm are both in their 60's. If either one of them never penned another song, they would still have their place in the history of great songwriters.

  • Hi there librarylady1010....I do agree with you on the past....What a composer Bobby Lamm WAS.....Amazing material...

Love his voice, Love his keyboard playing ( espacially on the Hammond B-3 )... But it is just to see him tolerate what's happening with the band is ....frustrating....Now a day I rather watch him play solo shows, then watching him with Chicago.....But I never did put down his talent to write ( but nothing good for the last 20 years....For Chicago)

  • Excelente grupo de todos los tiempos ojalá y la juventud actual escuchara esta música y no tamborazos y malos cantantesdisfrazados de ¨grupos famosos del momento"

  • who here watches 'yes dear' and alwase hears this song on there?!?!?!?

  • still remember my best friend billy giving this song to his then girl jeanie it didnt stop the fall but it was one romantic spot in him

  • Man, Peter just sounds so much better

  • I tatally agree with you.....

  • Another proof that Peter is just the right guy to sing this song. Amazing performance, the right blend between his voice and Bill's voice....Well I guess we have to sherrish these versions..It will never sound like that again....Chicago at their second wind, after the death of Terry Kath..They will never get that good with the line up they got now.....mind you it is only Jeff's voice that kills it....The rest of the band is O.K..But I would like to see a show with Peter and Danny Seraphine...

  • The cuurent Chicago touring the country is not Chicago plain and simple. It's pretty much just a cover band with even the original horns failing to show on a regular basis. Peter and Danny have shown themselves to be essential members of Chicago. I've seen every version of the band live and will never buy another concert ticket until either Danny and/ or Peter return for a performance. Even for just a short tour or a few shows, in honor of the legacy of Chicago.

  • I totally agree with you....I wouldn't let them disapoint me with a bad show...Sad but true....I guess as much as they play the old numbers....It misses the Voice/bass playing and drumming skills of Peter and Danny....

  • Sometimes I wish certain artist would think of the "FANS" instead of themselves! Chicago isn't the same without PETER and PETER isn't the same without CHICAGO!!!

WE WANT TO SEE THEM TOGETHER AGAIN BEFORE ITS TOO LATE!!!

  • I saw this tour in LA at the forum. I bet just a few days before this show. It was a memorable show, I miss Peter

  • nice keyboard...this is how I sing to prospective checks in the mail now...its wrong...I know.

  • Songs reminds me of roller skating into a wall.

  • Wishes that Peter Cetera, was still in Chicago :(

  • endoau, you're exactly right.

  • win its been ten years now and not a day goes by without me thinking of you ! what a fool i was , you really are a hard habit to break . j

  • Its sad how this song never fails to make me teary.

  • 素晴らしい!!

  • Comment removed

  • brenda-even now, 25 years after you left me, this song puts into words all that my heart still feels and until they lower me into the ground, always will. you did the right thing when you left me and no matter what, i will always wish for you the best in life & in love! l. fernando t.

  • i love his voice!

  • this song is to good to be true !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i like this song....

  • Chicago will be performing this song on A&E's Private Sessions on Sunday!! I think the show airs at 9am - check it out!

  • Me and Shannon love this song...we will be together some day!

  • I wish you the best.

  • thanks for great vid:)

    five starred it

  • OMG Peter looks like Ziggy Stardust at the start of the video

  • Too much drugs is a hard habit to break.lol

Anyways, this song is slightly cheesy, but it is a classic.:)

  • Aw why must you break it

You can find a way to make it work lol

    theres always a way

  • Agreed,I was just kidding about the drugs comment.

Just made it,because everyone back in the 80's was on coke, even the members of Chicago! lol

You'd have to be stoned to write such a song.lol

  • I may be mistaken but I don't think they wrote this. Believe it was written by Steve Kipner and J.Parker. David Foster and Jeremy Lubbock shared a Grammy that year-'84-for Best Instrumental/Accompanying Vocals and I think Humberto Gatitica had a Grammy for Best Engineered Recording.

  • Funny! and I agree.

  • it looks like ufo video footage..whatever happened to them for the last 17 years?

  • lol, whatever happened to them since 1985 roughly two weeks after this audio was recorded?

  • And the Band Played On........

  • It isn't the video. :(((

  • TOOOOOOOO much drugs!!!!!!!!!!

  • BTW STILL SOUNDS GOOD @ SINGING THIS

  • I remember Peter singing this song in the studio for shits n giggles last time he was in Nashville workin on his christmas cd

  • Do you know if any footage of Chicago with Cetera and Champlin performing this song live exists? I cant find any. You would think there would be something as it was such a massive hit..

  • I defintely prefer Cetera to Scheff, but I'd trade them both for Terry Kath

  • By the way, to the person that was talking about "youngsters"...I'm 23. I listen to heavy guitar riffs and screaming. BUT I am still able to throw this on and enjoy it. It reminds me of the times I spent with my dad when I was younger. I mean no direspect. It still strikes a chord with the youngsters, just not as much as you older cats.

  • This song strikes a chord with this 40-something man. I played this record when I was a college radio DJ and still enjoy hearing it today. It's great you appreciate this classic as much as I liked playing it when it was a hit.

  • This song is a monster! Bill and Peter's voices together are amazing! If Cetera ever thinks about rejoining I will fork over the money to see it.

  • Great song!

  • Like some other people I never heard that live version with Peter Cetera...Now it really makes such a great version compare to

Mr Scheff, his still goin' down. And I just noticed today that they lower down the key for Mr Scheff in ''You're the inspiration'' and still it doesn't sound as good as Peter cetera....Bobby Lamm wake up....your band is goin' down....

  • Yeah, Scheff had one good song in my opinion since he joined the band. 2 actually, but the other one is sung by Bill. Cetera is just one of them irreplaceable singers in my opinion.

  • I mean 2 other good songs besides the one he sings, forgot about Don't wanna live without your love, sung by Bill.

  • Hi dbaum23. At least I can see that I am not the only one realising it...The only 2 best albums I heard with Scheff were covers ( The big band project, and the Christmas album. he did good there) So mow Chicago became a good cover band....Now Terry would be very sad. I think that Robert Lamm just gave up...He doesn't even bother composing much no more....Too bad....When was the last number 1 song?????? Even just to show up on the charts

Very sad.....At least we have the first 2 decade for us

  • Wow, Seraphine must have really had to trade in his 7bs for some 5a sticks. I never knew Peter had a brother that sat in--that's pretty crazy. Oh, and I think this is the first live performance I've heard where Champlin isn't singing like a deuche.

  • It's a pitty, that this music has almost been forgotten about...I love it, but look at the # of plays compared to lets say any artists videos from the nineties, on...its a real shame the youngsters nowadays probably haven't even heard this song. Well, I gave it a 5star, anyway.

  • This is the time Peter Cetera began taking himself too seriously!

How fame, just like excessive power, can change people!!

  • I'd KILL for audio of this video as an mp3 song. I've been looking for years for a Cetera-live "Hard Habit to Break" performance.

  • Jamie, at some point in the 17 tour quite a few things changed: the staging was altered, they went to the all-white look, Peter had his Pbass refinished, Danny slung the (white) Slingerlands and got a new (Red?) Yamaha kit (and a hairpiece) and Kenny came along for the ride. Any idea at what point this all happened? Was it an encouraged image transformation for '85 and - if so - by whom?

  • Thanks for posting. Always found it startling how little concert footage there actually is from the 17 era, given that it was both a huge comeback and also the MTV era. The early part of that tour has some of my favorite bootleg audio - with the band roaring back to prominence after being written off and when the drugs disappeared.

  • Awesome! Is there any more footage or audio from this era?

  • Somethings wrong, the song isn't matching the video...

I saw them this tour and like wiillard2729, I had no idea it would be the last, but in my case ONLY time I got to see Peter. Chicago still totally rocks my world though.

  • I got confused about that. This is a vid of the "sights and sounds." =p

  • Thanks, Kid. Saw this tour in NJ. Like everyone else, didn't realize I was seeing Peter in the band for the last time.

BTW, this is the only post-Terry era song I think stands toe-to-toe with the Kath era stuff.

  • Thanks Jamie! It's a shame that more doesn't exist from this landmark tour. I appreciate your work in putting that together! Well done!

    -JH

  • Ah, the Old Days....Thanks Kid!

  • Nice post, Jamie! Awesome concert at Oakland Coliseum. Peter did outstanding performances of Prima Donna & Livin' In The Limelight, too.

  • Great job putting this together! Very cool!

  • Interesting observation, Mattbluhalofan.

    Thanks for posting this, CK!

  • That song with those clips just makes me wanna cry for some reason.

  • Maybe the notion that this was Cetera's last tour with the band and the feeling that he was so great and imperative to them at the time and so many of us love him so much, it hurts just to hear, "I guess I thought you'd be here forever." cuz shoot, we all thought he would, with the band I mean.... If it's nowhere near it, then disregard it. heh. But that's kinda how I feel, however, I do like Jason Scheff too.

  • Yeah, I know what you mean about the tears wanting to come...I cried for many days when I found out he left the band. Considering how many of us love him, it would be a very UNselfish thing of him to get back together with the guys for a few shows. I would like to add that I too am crazy about Jason though...

  • Wow great audio! Thanks for this.

  • Awesome! I've been awaiting anything from the Chicago '17' era. The 'Stay The Night' group shot is priceless! Thanks again. Now, what would top this? Some archival footage of the band in this era playing 'live'. *Crosses Fingers* Please? 'Along Comes A Woman' 84'/85'"LIVE"?

    Thank you kindly, CK69.

Proud Fan Of Chicago 1969 thru 1984.

    The 'Cetera' Era.

  • Love the "Stay the Night" video group shot at 2:29!

  • Ironic that they would play Hard Habit To Break frequently just months before Cetera's departure.

  • I guess He ( Peter ) was ( still is) the hard habbit to break...They tried to find a bass player who sounded like him....Sometimes does. But with a minus on the vocal range....Too high for him to sing.... So he sound like a club date singer asking for a voice.....
