In 500 characters or less, what we need at this point is sane, rational national debate on all the issues involved. From the regulations from both the left and right which incouraged these bad loans to Fed policy.
Yes giving the people duped in to bad loans that they couldn't repay so that mortgage brokers and lenders and Wall Street Bankers could make millions is different than giving the bankers 700 Billion ($5000 for every tax payer) to bail them out of their risky behaviors. Bear in mind the roots of this problem go back to the Carter Administration. And the Fed lowered rates too low in the 90's. In the environment of these historically low interest rates lawmakers were seduced to expand the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977. These lenders did not want to lend to these people, yet these new "regulations" put in place by the lawmakers forced these lenders to lend to them.
Further banks cannot value their own solvency. Complex derivatives are one reason.
The Fed cut its target rate for overnight lending between banks to 1 percent in June 2003 from 6.5 percent in December 2000, and left it unchanged for the next year. Between June 2004 and June 2006, it raised the rate in quarter-point moves to 5.25 percent. Nothing to do with the Carter admin. This caused cheap credit, low yields on bonds and the creation of subprime lending. It's not a political issue it's a financial issue and, in any event, it was caused during the Bush "conservative' years.
It does indeed go back to Carter with the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977. That legislation/"regulation" helped create these "bad loans". It was expanded under Clinton and yes, by Democrats during the Bush tenure.

Or another option is to let the companies fail.

Problem is, anything the government gets involved with doesn't really help. They have a tendency to make matters worse. Besides, if these companies are in financial trouble they should file for bankruptcy, and then straighten their problems out themselves. The government OWNING a piece of any private company is one big mistake.

Bear in mind the roots of this problem go back to the Carter Administration. And the Fed lowered rates too low in the 90's. In the environment of these historically low interest rates lawmakers were seduced to expand the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977. These lenders did not want to lend to these people, yet these new "regulations" put in place by the lawmakers forced these lenders to lend to them.
Further banks cannot value their own solvency. Complex derivatives are one reason.

The Fed cut its target rate for overnight lending between banks to 1 percent in June 2003 from 6.5 percent in December 2000, and left it unchanged for the next year. Between June 2004 and June 2006, it raised the rate in quarter-point moves to 5.25 percent. Nothing to do with the Carter admin. This caused cheap credit, low yields on bonds and the creation of subprime lending. It's not a political issue it's a financial issue and, in any event, it was caused during the Bush "conservative' years.

I should point out that I agree that capitalism- pure capitalism- is the best form of economy. The problem though is that pure capitalism has NEVER existed.
More so- true capitalism will NEVER exist as long as government is around.

For another thing I have heard Testimony that the waiting times for non emergency surgical procedures are terrible, cant honestly prove it though.
Of course, to me it just doesnt make logical sense. Your telling me that the Government takes care of things in the Health Department just fine, while it grossly mismanages almost everything else?
And is your idea of a smart decision pouring Billions into a new government program and destroying a thriving industry during a Economic Crises?

Details of the Health Care (Reform) Plan have yet to be determined, silly. Yest, the president held a Health Care Summit where all the important players participated so that we may avoid some of the previous roadblocks to passage. The president's critics should at least be respectful that we are fortunate to have a competent and smart president for a change. Quite refreshing actually!

I like Matthews and I voted for Obama but I don't think Matthews should have asked him that. At the very least it kind of makes him seem like he's picking on people who voice doubt over Obama's plans.
