Summer soft... Wakes you up with a kiss to start the morning off In the midst of herself playing Santa Claus She brings gifts through her breeze Morning rain... Gently plays her rhythms on your window pane Giving you no clue of when she plans to change To bring rain or sunshine And so you wait to see what she'll do Is it sun or rain for you But it breaks your heart in two When you find it's October. NICE PLAY OF WORDS!!!
A magical time living in Harlem. I was 6 and there wasnt a household that didnt own this album. One of my favorites songs. The first verse always made me sad. My mom ran this album out.
Lyrics (part 2) Taking with her summer's play Winter wind -whispers to you that he wants to be your friend But not waiting for your answer he begins Forcing danger's way with his breeze Morning snow plans to have a winter ball for you to throw But just where or when He never lets you know If it's snow or clear days you'll find And so you wait to see what he'll do Is it sun or snow for you? But it breaks your heart in two Cos you've been fooled by April And he's.. LOVE STEVIE
Lyrics (part 1) Summer soft, wakes you up with a kiss to start the morning off In the midst of herself playing Santa Claus She brings gifts through her breeze Morning rain -gently plays her rhythms on your window pane Giving you no clue of when she plans to change to bring rain or sunshine And so you wait to see what she'll do Is it sun or rain for you? But it breaks your heart in two When you find it's October And she's gone and she's gone, summer's gone cont/.....
Absolutely love the genius that is Stevland Morris but one battle that has consistently been warring in my mind is whether this is as good as Innervisions? One day I think Songs in the Key...next Innervisions...and vice versa.....opinions not arguments welcome.....both are phenomenal albums by such an amazing talent and truly amazing human....I really mean it when I say I LOVE Stevie Wonder.
@irvybear Personally I'd say Innervisions, but both albums are timeless masterpieces, and I don't like single out Stevie's best albums. Its one of the greatest bodies of work in the history of recorded music. Look at it this way, would you say Michaelangelo's painting on the ceiling of the Sistine chapel is greater than his sculpture of David? I wouldn't. Both are landmark works of art, by a once in a lifetime genius.
I remember when this album first came out. I was only ten but boy did it have an effect on me. If anyone has the vinyl, do you remember the credits page? He was saying thanks to everyone and he put his fingerprint as his signature and there was a blank line and he wrote underneath "there's a space for your name." I was so impressed with that!
@ppppdmt Ugh i have to explicate tis song and im a poet so im use to explicating but to me it can mean multiple things. Leaving us in a question makes the song even more beautiful .
@ppppdmt Have you ever heard the expression, find your Winter love in Spring. Some folk do and love fills the air and heart, life is full of promises, hope and highs. Come Summer your world comes crashing in and it's all over, all your hopes, dreams, etc to spend your life with this person. That''s the gist of it all...lol
No, no, no, MrDancinggenius, he made the "Boy in Blue" album.....he was on Ibuprofen gel at the time.... but applied too much....apparently.....I mean I dunno, I wasn't there.....the "Woman in Red" album was made by Rick Astley.....
@ImaniHekima Personally, I think and feel this is the greatest double album in all of modern music. My mom made a good comment, "You can't get any better than this. This is the height of human musical ability. So we can't expect anyone after this to do better." I must agree. All of western (some Eastern) musical influences are heard in this album in a consistent, cohesive, and thoughtfully creative way. Now when Mr. Stevie dies there should be an enormous outcry. No work or school that day!
the only constant thing is change....just like the seasons...no one can even come close to stevie....there is No comparison....hehas a powerful deep message...so heed it!! much love all...love conqures ALLL...be strong and laugh have fun! blessings
@ltinsley2 Agreed, I'm sorry to whomever may read this because The Beatles and Michael Jackson are my second favorite artist, but no one on this planet has anything on Stevie Wonder. I've said that since I first heard "You are the Sunshine of My Life" and "Tuesday Heartbreak" on a 45 at my grandmas for the first time a few years ago at the age of 11, and I will continue to say so. :)) Now I own around 6.3 hours worth of Stevie Wonder's Music :D
@lukefonfabre26 Stevie actually wrote music for Michael if you look at album credits. Stevie is a true musical originator, from whom other's careers and styles are heavily derived. You're lucky to have found him so early in your life. Keep on collecting good music!
@lukefonfabre26 discogs.com lists all the album credits for almost every album you can think of. lists producers, song writers, mixing engineers, mastering engineers, who played what instruments, sometimes even who programmed the synthesizers! It's a great resource for true music collectors. You get to learn what people were really behind the music.
@ltinsley2 SGT Pepper??? Hmmmm Ok I'll leave that comment alone (along with the statement about "Thriller") we all have our right to an opinion... (Besides, I think my BROTHERS will agree with you about Stevie Wonders songs/albums) Don't get me wrong, I love Stevie's music too... :)
@IWantMyVisionBack I wanted to ask you if you can you interpret this song? Is Stevie talking about how life can pass us by if we do not get moving? I always thought that Stevie was talking about a love affair ending between two actual lovers but I think he is actually talking about how the seasons can change rather quickly and before we know it...a year has passed...and the time we had set aside to actually do something has now passed and is gone. Am I right? What is your interpretation?
ask any Stevie fan whats your favourite song and they cannot name one there are too many to meantion 1 ask which one on each album then maybe such a genius these youngsters do not know what they are missing purely magical tune love it!
I dont think that there is any artist in the history of music who can say they had a classic period that matched Stevie's you had Music Of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, Songs In The Key Of Life although Fullfiillingness First Finale doesnt get lumped in there but it should that was a classic album also this is the greatest artist who ever lived I think no one even comes close his impact on music and the classic albums he put out are timeless
@ImaniHekima Can you interpret this song? Is Stevie talking about how life can pass us by if we do not get moving? I always thought that Stevie was talking about a love affair ending between two actual lovers but I think he is actually talking about how the seasons can change rather quickly and before we know it...a year has passed...and the time we had set aside to actually do something has now passed and is gone. Am I right? What is your interpretation?
@ladytechniques I think Stevie has got those two themes running alongside each other, LadyTechniques. Or more likely, the love affair aspect is hinted at underneath the mainl idea of the seasons. That's the great thing about the song, it lends itself to different interpretations. And the music is a perfect fit.
This has to be the best track from the first record of Songs In The Key Of Life by far Stevie's greatest musical achievement although some may say Innervisions which was probably his greatest socially conceptual album especially Living For The City which is a cinematic depiction of racial explotation
1976.....Songs in the Keys of Life. A record to deal with life as w knew it then, thanks Stevie..U saved me so many times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! StonieDog Stl.
@jorydude It really is. There are no flaws on this album. This is my favorite song on the album. I just wish I was a kid when this came out. I was born in 77
My favorite Stevie Wonder song. I actually get pissed off when he reaches that second chorus like, "Dammit, Stevie! Don't you dare go any higher!" But he always does. Sigh. Talent.
Everytime I hear this song, I think ofthe winter of 76/77. It was my first year of high school and "Songs in the Key of Life" had been out for two months by this time and the need to play more of this album hit. This song made the rotation. And I just think of the good times in high school. The bus ride to school, home from school. The many dances. Ms. Jaunita, my first high school girlfriend. My first Christmas in high school. And so many other memories. Now my eyes are watering.
@IRONMANHONDO87 Are we possibly the same person? Okay, I never knew a Ms. Jaunita, but everything else you say is exactly as I know it. Incidentally, I received this album as a Christmas gift that year. Did you? Thank you for wonderful memories. From Ramon
@zeta71 I never had the pleasure of ownership of this album until I enlisted into the Marine Corps. Then later on, I got it on c.d. I would always ask for albums for Christmas, but I was denied. Thank GOD for having my own income. This album is by far one of the greatest Stevie Wonder albums of all time.
one of the best songs off of the greatest album of all time - Songs in the Key of Life quite simply has it all. Every song is legendary in its own right. John Legend is pretty cool but he has a long way to go to reach Stevie territory.
heard this and immediately thought of my dear, loving sister Jamie..."remember we used to sneak into Darren's room to listen to Songs in the Key of Life?"...lol
@shakmac0509 No it is not gone. It's still here. BELIEVE me, there are plenty of artists, myself included, that make this type of music. Now, is it the focus of today's society to promote it? No, but if you look for us, we're still here - Eric Roberson, Sy Smith, ASCENDANT, Fertile Ground, Tiaybe, Rahsaan Patterson... so many others carrying the torch. Music that lives and breathes inside you. Look for them
People, people people, can we ever come in to these rooms, without acknowledging the haters? They love the attention. Please don't do it. It starts with us. PEACE.
Love this song....actually the whole dang album is rad! Love you Steve, great tunes. brings me back to those loving and crazy 70's days!! GOD BLESS!
What a prolific writer Stevie is. He never ceases to amaze me with the depth and creativity of his lyrics. I was 10 when this album came out. Didn't really appreciate it as a child but, I had the double CD in my collection for years and never really listened to the whole thing. Well, I listened to it in it's entirety about a year ago and...I get it now. It's brilliant, waaay before it's time and still better than anything out right now. I listen to it at least once a week, every week.
I was a 16 year old white kid when this album came out...Stevie blew my mind with this album, it solidified in my mind that he was beyond human with his mastery of music. Stevie...your pure magic brother, thank you forever!
im sitting here listening to stevie and crying because this touches my soul as a real artist GOD shows why he is the greatest through steveland wonder ive never heard something as timeless as this peace
yesterday i listened to this song after having a rough week and i had this weird epiphany.
It made me want to live better. I know it sounds weird but, being 16 yrs old in this age is hard. I'm constantly bombarded with disgusting and inhumane images. This just makes me wish i didn't have to grow up submerged in all of this filth. But it makes me appreciate the fact that i have the option to live differently.
I have no idea how i got all of that from this song. Stevie just has that affect on me.
This is one of my Favorite songs. One of my goals in life is to meet Stevie Wonder and shake his hand. I grew up in a family of people who listened to Stevie. My grandfather listened to him, my father listened to him, and I have grown (I am only 16 so I guess I am still growing :D) listening to him. I LOVE Stevie Wonder. <3
@LisaRenaye Very well expressed. An artist of Stevie's incomparable calibur requires some lookin up and extraordinary music like this is worth all the work.
@btinsley1 Generally, songs on the radio cater to the masses and the ear of the majority is too simple for Stevie's very elevated pieces. Songs on the radio need to be easy to sing along to for those who have no musical ear. They simply can't understand the details of this type of genius. At least that's my opinion of why we cant always hear songs like this unless maybe on a jazz station. You have to seek Stevie he won't just come to you.
Because radio stations nowadays don't have this kind of old music. They place the same oldies over and over again, not the oldies that meant something or was educational.
@btinsley1 Its because we are all in the shitty music vortex from which there is no return...All we can do is harken back to the times when music WAS music
@btinsley1 I,ve got the same problem, all the songs he has made, are nowaday,s fucked up with hip hop.
It breaks your heart in two.
He made such nice music, it,s not lost or forgotten in our hearts, but the new generation never know,s the true message, and feel the sound in their hearts.
@twillius3 Very true, the message of hip hop, often is ignorant and hateful. I am of the 'new' generation, but still you cant change the fact that this music is some of the best ever created. Besides, who says we can't bring it back in style, hip hop dosen't have to be hateful. A quote from Gandhi: "you must be the change you want to see in the world." (Not an exact quote but im sure thats very close.)

At face value one might interpret the song expressing how season's and time/relationships between a woman/friend move by so quickly.
But I believe it lies much more deeper than that.

one of the best songs off of the greatest album of all time - Songs in the Key of Life quite simply has it all. Every song is legendary in its own right. John Legend is pretty cool but he has a long way to go to reach Stevie territory.

This type of music is gooooonnne!!! and I hate it (that it's gone)!! It breaks my heart in two!!!
shakmac0509 1 year ago

I listen to it at least once a week, every week.

blue moves versus songs in the key of life!? they both came out at the same time, both the best of themselves, is it a Wonder!

yesterday i listened to this song after having a rough week and i had this weird epiphany.

Aw man REAL musicians.....thank you sooo much Stevie for your music.

why can't i turn on the radio & hear this?
btinsley1 1 year ago 81
Because radio stations nowadays don't have this kind of old music. They place the same oldies over and over again, not the oldies that meant something or was educational.

@btinsley1 Its because we are all in the shitty music vortex from which there is no return...All we can do is harken back to the times when music WAS music
BloodyBison 1 year ago 2
@btinsley1 Don't bother. Just go and buy the cd. Forget the radio. The NO TALENTS dominate the airways.
IRONMANHONDO87 1 year ago
@btinsley1 I,ve got the same problem, all the songs he has made, are nowaday,s fucked up with hip hop.
It breaks your heart in two.
He made such nice music, it,s not lost or forgotten in our hearts, but the new generation never know,s the true message, and feel the sound in their hearts.
twillius3 1 year ago 3
@twillius3: i thumb's up your comment....well said
btinsley1 1 year ago
@twillius3 Very true, the message of hip hop, often is ignorant and hateful. I am of the 'new' generation, but still you cant change the fact that this music is some of the best ever created. Besides, who says we can't bring it back in style, hip hop dosen't have to be hateful. A quote from Gandhi: "you must be the change you want to see in the world." (Not an exact quote but im sure thats very close.)
