Holy shit. Can't people think for themselves anymore? Apparently people will buy or do anything that a man with a deep voice tells them to. They watch advertisements and movies designed to misinform and skew opinion. They hang on to every single world like it's the ultimate truth being broadcast to them personally. I'm talking about BOTH the propaganda of "big pharma" and the misinformation blatantly advertised in these videos. It's crucial that you look at both of these sources with skepticism.
All I hear is pharmaceutical companies, psychiatrists, FDA, and all the other credible-sounding words, but, in reality, they are described EXACTLY the same way we describe a illegal drug pusher, EXACTLY. I am not a doctor, I'm not a health professional, but as my father once told me- and I believe he truly and sincerely means it- "the purpose of medication is to clear the way for therapy- true treatment is a combination of both. If you give meds without proper therapy, or therapy without the necessary medication, either can be useless". The problem is, too many doctors now give meds without counseling. Read up on this- don't just watch a video. Look at both sides without emotional bias.
I can't even watch all of this - just the basic premises I have seen seem purely strong emotions towards the drug companies, and then taking that and using out-of-context (or biased commentary alongside) quotes. "There is no blood test..." for depression and anxiety. Yes. Maybe in twenty or thirty years, when we are able to actually interact and evaluate the brain medically on a higher level, there WILL be a test. Humans are complex creatures.

there are more and more places using no drugs in rehab and vitamins and minerals for mental illness - pointing to nutrition as a cause in mental illness. Try researching that type of treatment too

My doc prescribed me Paxil after I complained that I had problems with putting my mascara on. He prescribed me Paxil; I bought it (gee, isn't it great to have a medical/prescribtion insurance!). On my way back from drug store I regained ability to think. It's impossible to put mascara on the eyelashes while having eyeglasses on. I bought a magnifying mirror & resolved the problem. Hmm, he just came back from his trip to Israel, as he told me, & that added up to his "enlightenment", I guess.

Hmmmm... some good points but it becomes painfully obvious after about half an hour that this program is produced by the church of Scientology which makes it highly suspect. They would have gotten away with it if they hadn't gone down the Darth Vader/Doctor Evil approach. @Scripter555 Good point! What I want to hear from a good documentary on this topic is percentages of problem outcomes vs. good outcomes, not cherry-picked worst cases. It is terrible that people want to kill themselves (and do) after going on a drug but we need to know if these cases are representative—if the outcomes shown here are but 3 / 1000 but the other 997 are good outcomes that tells a very different story. It would be easy to put 3 bad cases on film & make people think it's all bad.
@Scripter555 That's where this documentary falls down on being balanced. Having said that, it may very well show representative problems, but that isn't being shown here in a way that a discerning viewer can trust. The undiscerning viewer will swallow everything unquestioningly which is a problem if the cases presented here are not representative but relatively rare. (Personally, I think there is a problem in psychiatry/meds to be addressed but wish is was presented in a more scientific way).
If the medical officer/staff/doctor insists on you to take the screening and eventually take the drug, then the medical officer/staff/doctor himself/herself should also be subjected to the screening and drug! Nobody would want to be tested by a mentally ill medical officer/staff/doctor. The medical officer/staff/doctor should be medically certified to be free of mental illness by taking similar screening and take similar drugs.
And if the final question demand that you be honest about everything, you just continue to answer "YES". Telling lies in front of the devil is NOT A SIN! IT IS SELF-DEFENSE.
I believe one way to prevent trouble if you were ever forced to do the screening, is to give the answer that would not violate you. For example, if the question goes like "Did you sometimes feel good and sometimes feel down?", you should answer "NO" because that question would label you as having bipolar disorder. Just give the kind of answer that shows you as some healthy and perfect human. No mood swing, not shy, not fearful, happy, confident, etc. White lie is good when it saves lives.

@TechnoManiac2 Yeah I'm really mad at my mother too because she thought I had OCD 17 years ago when it was popular (I'm 30 now) and I was given luvox. And I've been on medications/anti-depressants ever since. If I was just left alone none of this would have happened. And they have the nerve to say they aren't addictive or habit forming, which is complete bullshit. I've since quit the anti-depressants but am still addicted to Klonopin just to avoid withdrawls. I feel like a zombi

I was on Sertraline it was meant to make me better instead I took 58 pills with half a bottle of vodka to end my life,I felt nothing just numb at the time, I was on a Life support machine for nearly 4 days. it was only because my wife found me passed out & having real problems breathing that I am here today, interestingly afterwards the DR (a GP btw) just changed my medicine & put me on Anti-psychotics, Now to be honest I do not even know if I am ill?
People should be aware that this docu was produced by anti-psychiatry Scientology front group CCHR (Citizens Commission on Human Rights) and while that doesn't automatically disqualify everything said (I share some of their concerns), we shouldn't assume everything is correct & balanced either, or that the other side of the argument was sought out before making it. There certainly is no alternative viewpoint presented throughout the whole 95 minutes which isn't the sign of a balanced documentary

@davehutchinson67 I share at least 95% of their concerns & regularly read a publication of one of the contributors, but I know people who without their psychiatric meds would believe they're the messiah, kill someone or themselves. That 5% of missing truth in this doc would have a serious impact on their lives if they ever watched this and decided to stop taking them.
you are correct . I feel my meds do more harm than good ,when I was "crazy" I was much happier & content, & my first meds nearly caused me to kill myself, I have been on olanzapine for ages but the Dr`s are changing them to a new one soon, & after seeing this I am thinking of stopping them all, I would rather hear voices etc than be pilled up all the time..
@paulspydar A close relative had similar problems with her meds and they took her off them & offered something else which seemed to work. If you have any negative effects you should always tell your GP. As this film says, prescribing meds is often a random process until one is found that seems to work. You are entitled to stop taking meds but I personally think you should only do it in consultation with your close family/friends & your GP though rather than just stopping on your own.
@davehutchinson67 BTW You know CCHR and Scientology wants to "obliterate global psychiatry"? Not just meds... *all* psychiatry. There is an obvious bias against psychiatry. That fact should at least be known to the viewer so they can consult other sources and be sure they have a balanced view, even if they end up agreeing with this video 100% (which would be fine by me).

@looseSpark I personally know of 3 mothers who have taken their lives whilst being prescribed such drugs The GPs in the UK are just as guilty of pushing such drugs to people suffering with depression and that is before you even get to a physiatrist There are treatments that can help people and usually its with out drugs

I have PTSD and was given zoloft back in the day and later switched out for a different anti-depressive and the side effects messed me up, but now I'm a legal medical cannabis patient and my PTSD is a lot easier to live with as well as a few other ailments that I use cannabis for! 100% organic Cali grown medicine!

Fact is that most of these drugs are untested and the psychiatrists who prescribe them aren't even sure. This is experimentation. I refer to the judge's comments on Conrad Murray's sentencing. He said whether a person agrees or not, does not give that doctor the right to experiment on a patient. It is serious neglect and MJ was not in a position to make any decision. Therefore the more doctors are prosecuted for this misconduct the better!
@linksysrouted Every person on the face of this earth feels anxiety when in a social setting. Some handle it better than others. That is part of a person's personality. That is what makes EVERY person unique.
Psychiatrists are trying to take away that uniqueness. You don't see that as a problem? You would want ALL people acting the same?
When the person is rendered dysfunctional and their life is stifled, it's a disorder. Shyness != social anxiety disorder. When everything they've tried has not worked, the person needs serious help from professionals. Unless you wish that person to suffer and continue to place blame on them.
This is not about people "acting the same", this is about functional vs. non functional. Being able to work and provide for themselves (and a family if they so desire) is what matters.
Co-morbidity is also a serious problem for social anxiety suffers. The isolation (social phobics need to be around other human beings just like anyone else) and lack of a life leads to serious depression and in many cases, suicidal ideation and the act itself. That is no way for anyone to live.
If the person chooses to try medication, that is their choice. For many people, it's a huge help. For others, it's not. It's a risk like most anything else in life. Some people benefit from therapy such as CBT, others benefit from medication or a mix of medication and therapy. Whatever works. Everyone is unique.
But to tell the person they do not have a disorder when their lives are in shambles and they've tried and tried to just live, that is very, very cruel.
@linksysrouted They do NOT need pills. That does NOT cure the disorder. That just covers it up. They need THERAPY. THAT was the reason for psychiatrists in the FIRST place. Pills only mask the underlying problem. They are NOT a cure.
The third leading cause of death after heart disease and cancer is physician/hospital error. About 30,000 a year die from normal and expected side effects from prescribed medication. Deaths caused by suicide (for instance), however, are not counted in this number, just like deaths caused by chemotherapy aren't counted as anything other than "died from cancer."
One time I started having panic attacks for virtually no reason, but at the time I was being stressed by a new job and i knew that's why I was having the panic attacks, I went to the dr to make sure my heart was healthy (at first I thought it was a heart attack which made it worse). The dr wanted to prescribed me xanax and I literally todl him "fuck no! " I got cured because there was nothing to cure. Shit happens. Deal with it.
It's interesting how they get people to start on these drugs is no different from street drug pushers. Give the first sample free because they know once the victim takes it they WILL be back for more. I am so lucky, I was on prozac years ago, after awhile it didn't do anything for me, then I went onto Paxil which was fine at first then I started feeling weird...Thank God he gave me the strength to throw the remainder of the pills away and I quit! For me, that was a miracle.

I am very thankful that I have had a healthy distrust and skepticism of pharmaceutical treatments and especially psychiatric drugs for most of my life.

I'm a nursing student and have learned about these disoders and meds in my mental health class. My instructior sure would be angry if she knew I had watched this as it doesn't fit the status quo. In school, they teach that these disordes are real, and meds are the only hope. It's a shame. Healthcare workers who we turn to for answers can only provide us with misinfo that they learned.

I'm a herbalist. However, i want to hear from psychiatrists on this issue. I have been through the whole of the DSM and every diagnosis is suspect. I'm also conscious of the inadequacy of the various psychiatrists whom i have met and whom my clients, friends and relatives have come into contact. @JL192com I don't like the way it's presented and i would prefer to hear other perspectives but it does accord with my experience of psychiatrists and my clients as a healthcare professional. It would be good if it had cut out the emotive stuff and either indicated that psychiatrists or pro-drug pharmaceutical employees had been approached and refused to be interviewed or included such interviews. I don't think hatchet jobs persuade and it'll just preach to the converted as it stands.
Have to say Im on Sertraline and it works pretty well for depression and anxiety. Has some annoying side effects, but does help me. This isn't a very balanced film.....it's just completely spun one way. SSRIs and other meds are very improtant for some people. Its not as black and white as the film makes out IMO
@cockywatchman1976: Get off the drugs and become clean, then see how you feel. Bet its better than you feel now. The "it helps me" is a placebo effect.

I've been off SSRIs and convivnced myself it's all in the mind, refused to believe the symptoms......but after 6 months I have no choice but to go back on SSRIs. Sure, if there was alternative help, that would be great, but there isn't. To say there is a placebo effect is stupid-for some, maybe. But absolutely 100% not for me. I hate being on them, but they do control my symptoms. Being on SSRIs doesnt make you "dirty"
@cockywatchman1976: Look to foods and herbs. Even look at what you already eat or even come in contact with. The problem might be there. Such as, chemicals at work or home. Also look at oneself, such as depression. Change what depresses you in life. There are many avenues besides just taking a pill.
@MinisterQuietBuck Im well aware of this! I eat well and exercise well etc. SSRIs work for me and prevent my anxiety and balance out my mood. There aren't really any other avenues that I haven't tried-only SSRIs really seem to work well. Life is stressful, and my genetics clearly predispose me to these issues. I can live with SSRIs-I can't live with the symptoms-they paralyse me. SSRIs are pretty good drugs if prescribed properly-this video is very one sided.
i ve been improsend in a mental institution. They gave me risperdal which made me seriouly depressed and impotent. I know someone that cant have orgasm anymore after chronic use of antidepressends. For what i ve seen, everybody that takes psychotropic drugs have a worse mental health the longer they take them.

I am not a doctor, I'm not a health professional, but as my father once told me- and I believe he truly and sincerely means it- "the purpose of medication is to clear the way for therapy- true treatment is a combination of both. If you give meds without proper therapy, or therapy without the necessary medication, either can be useless". The problem is, too many doctors now give meds without counseling. Read up on this- don't just watch a video. Look at both sides without emotional bias.

"There is no blood test..." for depression and anxiety. Yes. My doc prescribed me Paxil after I complained that I had problems with putting my mascara on. He prescribed me Paxil; I bought it (gee, isn't it great to have a medical/prescribtion insurance!). On my way back from drug store I regained ability to think. It's impossible to put mascara on the eyelashes while having eyeglasses on. I bought a magnifying mirror & resolved the problem. Hmm, he just came back from his trip to Israel, as he told me, & that added up to his "enlightenment", I guess.

It is terrible that people want to kill themselves (and do) after going on a drug but we need to know if these cases are representative—if the outcomes shown here are but 3 / 1000 but the other 997 are good outcomes that tells a very different story. It would be easy to put 3 bad cases on film & make people think it's all bad.

Having said that, it may very well show representative problems, but that isn't being shown here in a way that a discerning viewer can trust. The undiscerning viewer will swallow everything unquestioningly which is a problem if the cases presented here are not representative but relatively rare. (Personally, I think there is a problem in psychiatry/meds to be addressed but wish is was presented in a more scientific way).

I believe one way to prevent trouble if you were ever forced to do the screening, is to give the answer that would not violate you. For example, if the question goes like "Did you sometimes feel good and sometimes feel down?", you should answer "NO" because that question would label you as having bipolar disorder. Just give the kind of answer that shows you as some healthy and perfect human. No mood swing, not shy, not fearful, happy, confident, etc. White lie is good when it saves lives.

People should be aware that this docu was produced by anti-psychiatry Scientology front group CCHR (Citizens Commission on Human Rights) and while that doesn't automatically disqualify everything said (I share some of their concerns), we shouldn't assume everything is correct & balanced either, or that the other side of the argument was sought out before making it. There certainly is no alternative viewpoint presented throughout the whole 95 minutes which isn't the sign of a balanced documentary

@paulspydar A close relative had similar problems with her meds and they took her off them & offered something else which seemed to work. If you have any negative effects you should always tell your GP. As this film says, prescribing meds is often a random process until one is found that seems to work. You are entitled to stop taking meds but I personally think you should only do it in consultation with your close family/friends & your GP though rather than just stopping on your own.

I have PTSD and was given zoloft back in the day and later switched out for a different anti-depressive and the side effects messed me up, but now I'm a legal medical cannabis patient and my PTSD is a lot easier to live with as well as a few other ailments that I use cannabis for! 100% organic Cali grown medicine!

Fact is that most of these drugs are untested and the psychiatrists who prescribe them aren't even sure. This is experimentation. I refer to the judge's comments on Conrad Murray's sentencing. He said whether a person agrees or not, does not give that doctor the right to experiment on a patient. It is serious neglect and MJ was not in a position to make any decision. Therefore the more doctors are prosecuted for this misconduct the better!

When the person is rendered dysfunctional and their life is stifled, it's a disorder. Shyness != social anxiety disorder. When everything they've tried has not worked, the person needs serious help from professionals. Unless you wish that person to suffer and continue to place blame on them.
This is not about people "acting the same", this is about functional vs. non functional. Being able to work and provide for themselves (and a family if they so desire) is what matters.

Co-morbidity is also a serious problem for social anxiety suffers. The isolation (social phobics need to be around other human beings just like anyone else) and lack of a life leads to serious depression and in many cases, suicidal ideation and the act itself. That is no way for anyone to live.

If the person chooses to try medication, that is their choice. For many people, it's a huge help. For others, it's not. It's a risk like most anything else in life. Some people benefit from therapy such as CBT, others benefit from medication or a mix of medication and therapy. Whatever works. Everyone is unique.
But to tell the person they do not have a disorder when their lives are in shambles and they've tried and tried to just live, that is very, very cruel.

The third leading cause of death after heart disease and cancer is physician/hospital error. About 30,000 a year die from normal and expected side effects from prescribed medication. Deaths caused by suicide (for instance), however, are not counted in this number, just like deaths caused by chemotherapy aren't counted as anything other than "died from cancer."

One time I started having panic attacks for virtually no reason, but at the time I was being stressed by a new job and i knew that's why I was having the panic attacks, I went to the dr to make sure my heart was healthy (at first I thought it was a heart attack which made it worse). The dr wanted to prescribed me xanax and I literally todl him "fuck no! " I got cured because there was nothing to cure. Shit happens. Deal with it.

It's interesting how they get people to start on these drugs is no different from street drug pushers. Give the first sample free because they know once the victim takes it they WILL be back for more. I am so lucky, I was on prozac years ago, after awhile it didn't do anything for me, then I went onto Paxil which was fine at first then I started feeling weird...Thank God he gave me the strength to throw the remainder of the pills away and I quit! For me, that was a miracle.

I'm a nursing student and have learned about these disoders and meds in my mental health class. My instructior sure would be angry if she knew I had watched this as it doesn't fit the status quo. In school, they teach that these disordes are real, and meds are the only hope. It's a shame. Healthcare workers who we turn to for answers can only provide us with misinfo that they learned.

I'm a herbalist. However, i want to hear from psychiatrists on this issue. I have been through the whole of the DSM and every diagnosis is suspect. I'm also conscious of the inadequacy of the various psychiatrists whom i have met and whom my clients, friends and relatives have come into contact. However, i want to hear from psychiatrists on this matter. They must have a valid point of view or they would be acting against their conscience, which is impossible. So i'm asking for responses.

@JL192com I don't like the way it's presented and i would prefer to hear other perspectives but it does accord with my experience of psychiatrists and my clients as a healthcare professional. It would be good if it had cut out the emotive stuff and either indicated that psychiatrists or pro-drug pharmaceutical employees had been approached and refused to be interviewed or included such interviews. I don't think hatchet jobs persuade and it'll just preach to the converted as it stands.

Have to say Im on Sertraline and it works pretty well for depression and anxiety. Has some annoying side effects, but does help me. This isn't a very balanced film.....it's just completely spun one way. SSRIs and other meds are very improtant for some people. Its not as black and white as the film makes out IMO

I've been off SSRIs and convivnced myself it's all in the mind, refused to believe the symptoms......but after 6 months I have no choice but to go back on SSRIs. Sure, if there was alternative help, that would be great, but there isn't. To say there is a placebo effect is stupid-for some, maybe. But absolutely 100% not for me. I hate being on them, but they do control my symptoms. Being on SSRIs doesnt make you "dirty"

Also look at oneself, such as depression. Change what depresses you in life. There are many avenues besides just taking a pill.

@MinisterQuietBuck Im well aware of this! I eat well and exercise well etc. SSRIs work for me and prevent my anxiety and balance out my mood. There aren't really any other avenues that I haven't tried-only SSRIs really seem to work well. Life is stressful, and my genetics clearly predispose me to these issues. I can live with SSRIs-I can't live with the symptoms-they paralyse me. SSRIs are pretty good drugs if prescribed properly-this video is very one sided.

I want to know is how can someone be on 9 or so different prescription drugs for over 40 yrs for mental illness, & expect to be seen as normal & fully functioning? An addict is an addict, & a pill popper is a pill popper.
Unfortunately, mental illness is a choice for many as it's an excuse to avoid being accountable, & it gives a person a reason to continue to do bad things while blaming others for thier personal laziness in dealing with lifes problems.

I have almost no gray hair, no winkles and I can easily keep up with younger people at work. I get carded for things as I still look young yet I am a grandpa. Cannabis is Father's "plant of renown". It is also included in anointing oil in scripture.
