  • I'm natural and love it. My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner. I wear wigs sometimes but like you I can't take weave . I like to wash my hair often. I had a weave once and only once and it didn't last a week.

  • nice!

  • im seriously trying so hard to do this and ill moisturize and wash and keep my hair nice but it gets dry like a couple hours later its so crazy... and i want to cut my ends off but im just scared that they are going to get shrivled and dry like my current ends.

  • i did two big chops too the first time i just flat ironed my hair big mistake i thought heat is better then chemicals and my hair is stronger then my relaxed then i got a culry perm y hair didn't look curly it just looked like a weak perm then grew that out and let my husband who was in beauty school dye my hair then i let his classmate flat ironed my dyed hair month later never dyed my hair before dried brittle mess it was so bad i had to cut all my dyed flat ironed hair off !!!

  • i want to go natural but im scarred of chopping all my hair off. :( i have no support from my family members they all say that its ugly and nappy is not right. but i want to see what MY NATURAL HAIR can do and how i look with it. i want to be naturally beautiful :( but i have no support and im still in high school so ill get BASHED for going to school with "natural hair".. people are so mean

  • Curlynikki is one of the best sites ever. Soooo motivating

  • ilove your fro! its beautiful :D

  • your fro is gorgeoussss

  • Best decision in my life I'm 3 years natural :D!

& I LOVE IT OMG I LOVE IT!

If anyone is thinking about going natural

    you should do it :)

  • This is a great vid with great advice! I haven't had a relaxer since 2009, but I've been getting it blow dried/flat ironed every 2 weeks and sometimes every week ever since. Now that I'm noticing stifled growth and that my hair isn't as thick as it used to be, I'm going to start doing no heat natural styles and only putting heat on my hair once a month at most. Thanks in advance for all of your tutorials because I know they'll be extemely helpful! :-)

  • This is a great video. Some people don't know how challenging it can be to learn their hair and end up discouraged. I've had my share of periods of feeling discouraged. I'm so thankful for the natural hair community.

  • You are absolutely adorable and I love your hair! My background is similar; my natural hair never saw the light of day until 6 months ago! Every picture of me as a child is with my hair in two ponytails. As a teenager, I started relaxing my hair, along with blow-drying and flat ironing it into oblivion. You are an inspiration. I agree with you, thanks to online resources, I'm fully confident in my decision to set my curls free. I’m loving this curly girl journey. Thank you so much. :-)

  • your hair looks so soft lol ...i want to see 4c hair with this kind of growth!

  • how'd u get ur hair so big? is it an old twist out?

  • @thetrendsetter77 My hair gets big like this when I rock old twist outs. I just seperate them and fluff. I rocked a dry twist out yeterday, then put on a bonnet lastnight. I woke up this morning and have a big ole puff.

  • I adore your afro!

  • i did the exact same thing when i first tried going natural...ah the power of learning

  • Nice video girlfriend! Natural oils are the best treatment for hair.A friend suggested argan oil so i bought an oil i liked the look of from amazon and the difference has been night and day.Not only has my hair grown but it has thickened so much i have stopped using it for the time being. It is also silky and soft and no more split ends. The oil i got was from london, england by mama nature called pureargan. It was not cheap but it lasts ages.

  • please tell me how to get your hair like this :( my hair is bra strap length but my curls hang.. i want an afro

  • @FlickerspeedToons I have a natural curly afro. I guess it's because of how thick my hair is or well, just how my hair's growing out, but people tell me that when my hair's much longer, the weight of it would loosen up my curls some more and make them hang.

However, when I had relaxed hair, I sometimes went out with an afro (though straight), I could comb my hair out into an afro because it just grew out big and afro-y. All you need to do is comb your hair upwards then work with it from there...

  • @FlickerspeedToons (continuation).... if your hair allows it, you'll be able to rock and afro. However, you can find a way to sorts set your hair in a way that it can be combed out to stay looking like an afro and actually last. I don't know exactly, but that should work. I've only worked with afros on my natural hair, my relaxed her and my texturised hair and my hair naturally grows out like that so... I don't know.. research on it maybe.

  • @SammySingally Thankyou for your time and effort into my question i will try the tips you gave me thanks again! :)

  • i wore my hair in a bun everyday for a whole year and a month. i barely got it straightened but i got my relaxed hair cut off a few days ago and my natural hair is shoulder length.my natural hair is curly :) love your hair by the way.

  • Why didn't your two younger sisters share their tips on their transition to natural hair so you could avoid the pitfalls you went through when you first wanted to go natural? I'm glad you are sharing so those of us who want to transition to natural can be forewarned.

  • Thanks, I went to too groovy and chopped it off yesterday. Ready to play with it and have fun

  • OMG! You live in my city!! >.<

  • I wish my natural would grow, I've been natural for abt 2 years and my hair has grown very little. "/

  • @Cheygurl1396 Do you know Black girl with long hair ? They have good advices and points about hair growth and everything...but you already know, right ?!

  • I love my natural hair. & i love when other natural ladies embrace their hair as well. Check my channel out im 9 months natural since big chop! :)

  • Your afro is sexy. I wish more women had hair like this.

  • I love your hair!!!

  • A weave helped my hair grow a lot! Of course not the hair left out...ugh good and bad =[

  • I love your hair! don't take this the wrong way, but how do you tie your hair up at night? just wondering because its very thick!

  • OMG I used to watch your videos from the beginning and I lost track. you had just got the big chop and you actually were my inspiration to go natural :) my journey is going great and i see you have some biiig progress.

    #TeamNatural

  • Your 'fro is so sexy. <3

  • How can get an afro like that my hair is thin when straight but puffy natural thanks

  • It feel like my hair never grows its been a year sense I straighted and I see no growth what can I do been natural 3 years. Thanks

  • Listening to this was like turning back the clock for me. I've been natural for such a long time but I've only recently realized that flat ironing everyday and blow drying and heat was not healthy. I constantly was having to cut my hair super short because of breakage so I did the big leap into no heat styling just a few months ago and the growth since then is amazing! YouTube has been a life saver your channel and others like yours has been such a huge inspiration! Keep up the good work! Your

  • You've truly inspired me... i mean likie check my hair :D

  • I love your hair.... i wish my hair would be like that...

  • Where's part II Mae? ( :

  • Ive been going through the same thing exactly as you are! Im transitioning for the second time.

  • love your FRO.. you go girl ..

  • I did the bc the morning that I first watched this video on September 21st. I had been contemplating it for months and I finally did it. I love my hair. I love the texture. I found that this journey means more to me after the bc than it ever did in thought alone. Thanks for your inspiration! :)

  • @Anituer13 you sound like me....i want to bc soooo bad but i am in fear that i can't handle the twa

  • @rikka1287 it gets tough sometimes especially when you get bored with the same small fro but with patience and good support, you can do it. It's gonna be sooo worth it lol that's all I keep thinking about lol

  • Thanks for this because I am soooo discouraged right now. I've been natural for about a year and am at the point now that I don't know what to do to my hair or what products to use.

  • I transitioned twice too, the first time was during my second year at Oakwood and I recently had my healthy beautiful hair colored(BAD TIMING!) I was so confused on how to care for my hair and it started to break :-( A couple years later I found out you were vlogging and blogging and soon after you did your BC...I mustered up the courage to the same! I def learned from your 'what not to do with your natural hair' you saved me from yet another failed attempt at being natural!

  • No, I don't think it will be a passing trend. Once we found out how fabulous and beautiful our hair can be in it's natural state as long as we take care of it, we aren't going back. :-) So no worries. It's here to stay. (I regret the first day i ever had a relaxer placed in my hair. If I had known better at a young age, I would have voiced my opinion)

  • @sydoneyblake Me too i begged my mom to put a relaxer in my hair back in my programmed era!! Now i wish i had just never took that route!! But once i bc i aint neva going back! I dont want to fit in anymore and i want to see how God intended for me to look =] If we continue to motivate each other we wont go back in reverse....i rather get a straight weave then a perm

  • @sydoneyblake yeah agreed...people are actually learning how to take care of their natural hair...i think the most important thing is that people need to know they have options (relaxed or natural) and that knowing how to take care of your hair in either state is the bottom line. it's all a choice...

  • @sydoneyblake I agree. My hair was relaxed from 3yrs old to 19. When I was 19 I was like that's it I AM DONE!!!, I never really intended to go natural I just wanted healthy hair but that turned into me transitioning and learning about natural hair. Best decision I ever made. My last relaxer was in 09. I honestly can say I will never go back.

  • lol omg this is me ina nutshell

  • Your hair is so BIG!!! And I LOVE IT!!

  • I am so happy I found your channel! AH! Awesome! Also.. I'm gonna need to know what you did to get that PERFECTLY shaped 'fro!!??!!!?!?!?

  • what are some products you used that you know helped your hair maintain length and moisture

  • Girl! I made the exact same mistakes. I am still transitioning while trying to keep straight ends. It's crazy. In October I will have 1 year of transitioning and I will go ahead and chop off that dead, straight hair. Finally!

  • My last relaxer was 9/22/09, but I transitioned for 19 mos before the "chop". Amazing the difference in my hair. I have been following you for a long time. And, I see, we both have in common, little love for weave and braids, cause we "like" touching our hair.

  • @chrisbi101 your clearly very ignorant..quit being a waste of space and do something other than insult people. In other words, GET A LIFE!

  • how did u get ur hair like that?

  • How long has it been post relaxer? Thanks!

  • Your hair defies gravity! I love it!

  • This was a hit! Thanks so much for this. It's funny how people can go through the same thing and while you are going through it, you feel that you're the only one. Then something happens (i.e. your video) and you realize that others are going through the same thing!!! :) Thanks for being so inspiring.

  • @aran08504 no sure if Shea moisture have 10 ingredients or less or not but it's all natural and it's 10 dollars at target and walgreens

  • Congrats!!! I can't wait until my 2 years. I just big chopped in April so I have a long time but I am looking forward to it. Your hair looks GREAT!!!!

  • I love NikkiMae's video and she is such a inspiration to me.I want her afro :)

  • Congrats on your anniversity. I looking for better holisic products without harmful ingredients or drying ingredients. I am also looking for products with less than 10 ingredients in it. and affordable. I have extremely dry hair that sheds. I put so much moisturizing butter at night and in the morning it is as dry as sand paper.

  • OMG that was soooo me last year! I went perm free for 5 months and I STILL flat ironed my hair everyday to match the perm! I love natural hair and I thought it would be "interesting" to see how my natural hair looked. THIS year, I am going natural the right way! I'm doing the heat free transitioning styles and I've been going strong for 3 months now! I plan on doing the big chop in December! Thank you for this video! I thought I was alone! Lol.

  • I am so glad that you are sharing your faith. You can reach so many people who may never hear about Jesus Christ. You will be in my prayers. God Bless. Your are KINGDOM BUILDING!!! Amen.

  • i love your videos... you were actually one of the people who motivated me to stop relaxing my hair. I love my natural hair... i do... but ive been natural for just under 2 years and my hair is not as long as yours. Its actually about 4 inches shorter. So my question is "what do you do to maintain your length??" PLEASE HELP!! thanks!! =]

  • Your videos are so helpful and inspiring!!! Thank you!!! Your hair is so GORGEOUS and so are you! Inside and out! Keep on!

  • @Nikkimae2003...girl you inspire me

  • love ur channel ...cud u share how you achieved this look in your vid?

  • Great advice! It's the first thing that I tell people. Please inform yourself!

  • a relaxer since you were 6 :O but your hair is so pretty!

  • Wow this is so informative thank you. God bless :)

  • Am I the only one who notices that she never protective styles and her hair seems to flourish anyway? How can this be? @NikkiMae2003 do you use protective styling to protect your ends and maintain length?

  • Your such a fresh breath of air...through this tuff journey. I'm 7 months in, but not trying to do the BC. My hair length is past my shoulder, just trimming the ends once a month. Thanks for your honesty:) GOD bless

  • Girl, your hair is FIERCE!!!!

  • omg yor hair=the bomb.com. so amazing and BIG =) hehe

  • Great Advice Mae,

    U R the Greatest

  • WHERES PART 2?????????????????????

  • @piiiinkskullz It's on its way : )

  • Lol Mae I know exactly how you feel I went through the same thing with my two year transition to natural...is this is Amlyv from DuPont. Lol! Thanks for the motivation, it helps me on my natural journey!

  • ur fro is a BEAST on this vid, I HEART it :)

  • So funny about the weave. Tried it for the first time last summer and had it in for 2 weeks then got a relaxer right after. I'm now in my 10th month of transition.

Love your hair and your lip color.

  • ure so original ;)

  • Great video @Nikkimae2003 =)

  • I hope this natural hair movement isn't just a passing trend. I hope we all continue embracing our God-given curls :)

  • @Smiilez03 i believe its not a fad women are realizing nothing is wrong with your hair what is wrong is your way of thinking. its more than hair its accepting ourselves and @KitaBee23 you are sop right the media everything even wrong handling. Straight hair is suppose to be good hair and anything that curls or is big isnt. Im glad women are realizing that's not true i love my natural hair i haven even thought of straightening my hair

  • @timeless617 That is true. We are all being awakened and finally accepting our hair and no longer seeing it as a nuisance or something to be ashamed of. It's sad how the media and society equates straight hair with words like professional, clean, sleek, proper

  • @Smiilez03 Me too.!! :-)

  • @Smiilez03 Well.... I won't be perming my hair anytime soon.

  • @Smiilez03 AMEN 2 DAT SISTAH!

  • @Smiilez03 OMG yes!! I would like for us to go back to a point where pretty much everyone was natural....when whoever had the biggest afro was the cutest (so my mom tells me lol). Our black is beautiful especially our hair because in its natural state its so versatile. I want us to embrace how we were made....girl i can't agree with you more ;)

  • @Smiilez03 I'm noticing so many black women wearing their natural hair in NY! I saw a lot of black women with short, natural hair over the past months. I assumed most of them did it for a big chop. It gives me hope. I hope the rest of the world will notice the uniqueness of natural hair and see how beautiful black women can be with it. =)

I already noticed a lot of white models of fashion shows and in some ads wearing "afros". LOL

  • @Smiilez03

I agree! Im transitioning, but that is because Ive learned so much as a Black studies minor, and black women and thier hair is a major issue in the black community. I hate when girls do it just to jump on the band wagon, but in any event it is still beautiful to see women who are natural, i think they look sexier!

  • Congratulations on ur 2 yr Journey. Ur hair is beautiful, ur beautiful.

  • i really should stop visiting ur channel. I usually wear my hair in protective styles, but every time i come here ur hair is soo fly, i just have to try ur styles...but its always an epic fail, n i end up over manipulating my hair :( don't know how u do it, keep up the good work

  • iam so glad that i have family and friends encouraging me to stay natural because im the only one in my family who is has been natural my their life "so blessed"

  • I actually went natural a couple of months before I went to study abroad in London. I went there with this lace wig knowing that there would not be much for me to choose from where I was (well as far as I knew) and came back with so much information. I began watching naturals on youtube and the rest is history. I transitioned for two years and finally got sick of the small about of stringy hair still attached that I just cut it off one night. It was the best decision I ever made. I love my hair!

  • i love your hair i cannot wait til my hair gets that long i love my twa but i like all the styles you can do w/ longer natural hair i just big chopped tho after 8 months i have a long way to go :( lol

  • Hello i just stated the natural transition with my hair i can say that i been natural for about a month now and i would love to know if you would recommend any natural hair website or blogs that i could go on

  • @foreveryours4487 curlynikki (dot) com

  • I just love your giant fro, if I could borrow your hair... lol, I would be too happy.

  • i wish i would have seen this before i did my big chop . it was just an act of impulse but in the end i'm soo happy i did it.! 5 months && going strong since my BC && i make sure to watch the blogs && take heed of any advice I can find.! =D

  • No disrespect to you or your Man/Woman but that Fro is smokin' hot. :)

  • You know, I think it's so sad that its revolutionary for black women to embrace their natural hair. All other ethnicities were taught to love what they were born with, while the black community we were taught that we need to change our natural appearance to look nice. Now everyone is looking at us like we're crazy for being who we were created to be in the first place! SMH I've been natural for 1 yr and 8 months and I have no desire to ever go back!

  • @KitaBee23 Amen! It amazes me how many people deny the fact that indeed black girls are taught to hate their hair, our hair is seen as a nuisance, something to be covered and hidden. it's sad

  • I love all of your videos and you really are an inspiration for me to continue on my natural hair journey. In October I will be 2 years natural and lately I have been frustrated with my hair and wanting a change. But then I saw your fro and I was like never mind :) How do you make your fro look like that? I have tried, but failed miserably lol

  • @NettaSoSweet Her hair is thick, dense & coarse so you could use the same products, style your hair the same method & have the same length & the result could be totally different... so it's probably not your technique, just different hair. My hair is like Mae's & my friend is also natural & her twist-outs & braid-outs don't look as full as mine bc her hair is fine. Just find a style that works for you bc unlike my friend, my hair is too thick for wash-n-go's but she does them just fine :)

  • Ur videos really help

  • awesome video , i am loving the lesson videos :) cant wait to see lesson 2 :)

  • I broke down and put a texturizer in my hair and learned that everyone can't do texturizers...lol. I had stringy straight hair at the ends and it looked a mess. I had to cut off the ends so this is my second time around.

  • @MsTinyCurls

I had the same issue... I'm a little over a year into natural journey #2

  • I LOVE your videos!!! Your channel is one of the channels I used for motivation and knowledge(along with my own research). You are truly inspiring. Kudos to you, Mae!

  • Natural hair is the most beautiful :)

  • whts your curl pattern

  • Just wanted to let you know that you are an inspiration to me! I love your perseverance for natural hair care! It's great that we are being informed about what to do with so many videos. Also, I am african american and a classical bass player ( I noodlel around on Electric Bass). I was so surprised to see you playing the bass and singing! Rock on Girl, in your faith, in your talents, in your perseverance, and in your career! God bless.

  • I love this video. It speaks of how you were discouraged at first... but now you've got all this healthy hair because you did your research and stuck with it eventually. As for 4 months... I know this is gonna be weird for most.. But I use to get a perm every 3 MONTHS anyway.. LoL! I've never done it monthly. :)

    Jen :D

  • I have learned a lot from watching you on youtube.

  • Nikkimae with the straightest weave? Cant imagine!;-) You look Beautiful! Thanx for your story! I love it!

  • @ ebofasho, nikkimae has a winter regimen or there are many others with suggestions on youtube, curlynikki, naturally curly etc. I'm glad ur hair feels and looks great now. Peace :)

  • I been natural for almost 6 months....I love it !!!! Best decision for me at this stage in my life I'm 26 and my husband loves my hair. He hates that I have to wear braids for my protective hairstyle, lol.

  • I keep feeling like putting your hair in a puff lol.. by watching this video

  • @SKALOLE omg i was just feeling the same way!

  • Love your story, keep up the good work.

  • Congrats on being natural two years, I'm coming up on my 1 year anniversary. My Journey was very similar to your except for my second transition I transitioned long term. But yes thank God for Blogs, and Vlogs without them I wouldn't have made it this far. I love your channel keep up the good work (-:

  • yea, I did the same thing and my hair broke off in the crown area on the left side.

my hair now is ap length but that part is still short. :(

  • I really love your hair, I just got a account couple of weeks ago. I have been transitioning for about 1 year. So I will be posting some video up. I am new to this, but just want to compliment you on your hair. How did you get it to grow so fast.

  • @BlessedNubianQ her hair actually grows at an average rate. she takes good care of it (as she's explained throughout all of her videos) but her hair is the length that all hair is supposed to be after 2 years of growth.

  • Thank you so so very much for continuing to do these videos. You were one of my inspirations for going natural. Along with the other natural woman on YouTube my self confidence, the way people see me and the way I see myself have all changed in a positive way. Ive thought about going natural for many years, but never had the courage to do the BC. Like you I had two transition periods, but I'm loving my hair more and more with each passing day. I am now in my second month of my natural hair jour

  • Yeah florida does wonders for natural hair, my mom went natural and that's one thing she always complains about, lol. Must share this with her. Good post Nikki!

  • i kepp saying to my brother " look how big her hair is !!!!!" lol looove it

  • same here, smh i just took out my weave and it kind of damage my hair too

  • @ Nikkimae2003- Can u please share how long your hair is in inches measurement? Please and Thank You!

  • I did my Bc in May 2009, you have left me in the dust as far as progress and I was angry about that for a while. You are an inspiration and a beautiful person inside and out.

  • Your hair journey sounds alot like mine. I did the BC the first time and my self esteem went way down, this time i'm transitioning but videos like your and others give me the encouragement to go through. Thanks for allowing God to use you! -Be Blessed

  • You look crazy beautiful! I am in some serious hair envy! Love ya, Nikki!

  • Your transitioning process sounds alot like mine. Im realizing that I Am meant to be natural, my hair HATES relaxers! So even though it is a journey. I'm learning to be patient with it and know that in the long run it'll all pay off ;). Glad ur doing this series Mae!!!

  • Thanks for the video...truly inspirational...my anniversary is July 22nd too- but in 2010...can't believe it's been 1 year for me!!! Keep the positivity coming!!!

  • Great personality

  • this video is very inspirational!! I'm almost six months in and i can't wait to hav a 2 yr all natural celebration!! i love my natural hair! and mae your hair is very gorgeous!

  • You have truly been my inspiration on my natural journey! Your hair looks fab!!!

  • Wow! What GORGEOUS hair!!

  • Hey Mae, I BC in Mar. 2010 & I knew nothing about what I was doing. I just became fed up w/ my relaxed hair & decided that I was going to be natural so I went in my bathroom & cut my hair... best experience ever.! Needless to say I wasn't using the right products & a natural friend of mine told me to check you out on YT. I am so glad I did! Although I damaged my hair the 1st go around, I will celebrate my 2nd 1 yr. BC date in Jan 2012 & finally I am on the right path to heathly hair & growth!

  • Are you saying weaves in general are not good for natural hair?

  • @Chynese0010100 no not at all they are great protective styles, but here's a tip, no leave out if it requires straightening, trust you will hate the two textures once you take it out, just make sure you wash your natural hair underneath and be careful when you take out the weave.

  • I can't wear my hair natural because like how she felt, I was insecure. I really want to go natural because I am going to film school and I will have no time to go the hair dressers. I still need help after taking out this weave.

  • your hair does not even fit in the screen!! awesome!!! love the hair

  • Great advise.

  • Lol! I got a relaxer my first go at being natural too...... it definitely pays to get in know about your hair.

  • Your hair is sick!!! :-) Thank you so much for all of your inspiration over the years.

  • have you done a video with your sisters?

  • how did u celebrate? lol

  • we have the same natural anniversary! same amount of time too =]

  • Thank you for this video and I look forward to seeing the rest in this series. Very inspiring.

  • I feel you. I can't wear weaves anymore (actually I've only worn them twice in my life, and that was before going natural). Heck I'm even finding braids uncomfortable. I'm just so in love with my hair and wearing it out.

  • how can u dislike this video ? but anyways mae I totally feel you! i live in atlanta and it gets so damn hot and humid that chopping it off was like the only way! this time next year will be my 2 year also! I never even had a relaxer but the flat iron completely destroyed my huge afro head of hair in just ONE YEAR!!! I have been sticking to rollers and twist ours and my hair looks great! but im scared of what to do for winter!!!!

  • I swear you must know me because you just told my story word for freaking word! LoL! Your hair is absolutely beautiful. I've been natural for two years and am definitely inspired to stay on my path. :-)

  • great advice!

  • Hi Mae! Great video...I have followed u since ur big chop and u were pure motivation for me....I am 1yr 2mos. natural and never going back! But u are right...it makes things soooo much better when u can see other people's journeys, mistakes, and sucesses..

  • thanks for sharing!!!!
