What's so cool about Pet Clark was that not only was she a big part of the British Invasion of the 60s, unlike the members of music acts like the Beatles, the Stones and the Supremes who started to make the scene while in their late teens/early 20s, Petula was already an established singer/actress in the UK (going back to her childhood) who was already in her 30s and married when she hit big here in the USA. Pet, you're still the best!
@derf66 the implication that the Supremes were part of the British invasion is incorrect. That's analogous tosaying Dean Martin was already an established singer in the 60's. You are equating apples and oranges
@MultiHotNERD I should've written my comment a little more clearly. I know the Supremes were not part of the British invasion - how could they be? - They were from Detroit, Michigan! What I was trying to say was that many of those music acts that made it big in the 1960s - whether American or British - were in their late teens and early 20s. Petula Clark was 32 when "Downtown" hit #1 in the US in 1964. But she was famous in the UK long before then. Ciao.
The cool thing about this is that she's not lip-synching, unlike almost all the clips from 60's hit-parade shows on YouTube. A few notes are off, but you can really hear how good her voice was.
@searcherboy Nice to see this done live, and these were normally lip-synched. Notice Pet is nowhere near the orchestra, she probably couldn't hear them for all the screaming. She's great nonetheless........
I have been in love with this lady since I was 8 yrs old, my mother has the original album, I used to play it without her permission, but she never minded. she knew.
She is total talent ! The music is a bit out, But she still holds it together throughout the performance. I love the little que's she throws to the group to pick it up but they seem to be refusing to do so. As a professional she appears to be totally unbothered by this. Very cool.
She is performing here against incredible odds. But she becomes defiant and pulls it off anyway. Total professional. I bet she was ticked off a bit later though. And who would not be. Hard when people love you so much that they get rude. And all you wanna do is play your music and sound well. Ask the Beatles. They know about it. call them up... PAUL"S number is 1253-378-3289 Call Ringo at 1332-476-1296 Ask Paul after he is done yelling at you. It is hard to be popular.
@zebratangozebra LOL...This is one of the funniest YouTube post I've ever read; the other one was when a ticked-off man gave his home address, with his apartment number, and challenged the person he was angry with to come by for a fight.
The rhythm section stinks, and the tempo is about as steady as an arhythmic heart. I would not blame her a bit. Of course, with all the god damn screaming going on, it doesn't help. If you go listen to the original, it is real obvious that the band is not helping her out one bit...in fact, right at the beginning, she is using her body language to get them to follow her...to no avail.
ya the guy just walks past - funny - but wow what a voice - what a great time - what do we have now...rap-hip hop - what a load of shit - a bunch of semi-illerates making millions with no talent- sounding all the same - wonder what these jerks will be listening to in 20 yrs...God forbid
@barilko5551 We have these days is allot of music that preaches hate , violence and altering consciousness with dangerous drugs ! And yeah WHAT A VIOCE !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I grew up watching Petula Clark on the Ed Sullivan Show. It was until I was much older I really appreciated her monumental talent. She is definitely a sixties icon. thanks for posting this great video.
The 1960's American youngster's reaction to this performance shows that the U.S. audience wasn't just reacting to British men artists doing well in the states but would except any British artist at that time including a woman who was a bit older than them -- as long as she was British.
Yeah, it was amazing the whole British Invasion phenomenon. I have a live album from The Kinks from around 67 or 68, and you can barely hear the band. All you hear is screaming. Petula Clark and Dusty Springfield were tops in my book for female British singers..
Beautiful song, beautiful lady! I love this song. Thanks for the post.

How did we go from this lovely, talented woman to a half-naked bimbo in stilettos falling off a piano?
