Though I certainly like the atmosphere and imagery that the lyrics create I too, CludzyMasta, have been perplexed at the meaning of this song. Here is what I see out of it that is easy enough to explain: First it is very directional going from Point A, starting with the end of the walk w/ dearly departed gramdma, and ending with the encounter with the stone lion.

And chronologically the time frame is a very small snippet with no back story introduced with which to give us further context (save grandma is dead and apparently the boy was fond of her for she was dear). Now suppose the walk with grandma (comtemplation on the meaning of life, a hereafter, state of ones soul) was what led him to this church. Though the surroundings of the ancient house make it at first seem decrepit the building is actually inviolable and still lies waiting.

(The surroundings reflect the spiritual wellbeing of the boy. And the church a spiritual wellspring.)The stone flight upwards is the promise of the road to take to attain the same state the grandma is in. However, alone the boy cannot reach it because his, like all hearts, are defiled and he cannot return to the place/state from which he descended.

The stone lion is a symbol of both might and firmness of principle and I get the sense that this imposing figure is looking over the whole situation but will only help if the boy asks for it. Why will he not ask for it? Pride, feels he cant accept, feels unworthy of it, perhaps he doesnt like the lions terms, etc. We all refuse help for different reasons from time to time.

To sum it all up it is about a redemptive but stolid character, the lion, and the struggles of one who is evaluating there soul but cant get where they want to go without The Lions Promise.

That is just me anyway. Hope this was not annoying to read. I may have gotten a bit carried away.
