The core way of life that Carlito's way of life is actually very real. Any person coming out of the "hood" knows only that environment and tries to get on the right path when they get out. They can't, they will suck them right in again, involve him/her. Thats the reality of that movie in this case. Its tough.

there are so many different ways they could go at making a movie you can have Carlito's son infiltrate Benny Blanco organization work his way up and take it over. Or you can make him friends with Benny Blanco son or kill Benny Blanco son after he tells him that his father killed his. I feel that the possibilities are endless
