yeah, the Hiland signatures don't normally come like that. That must be a special order for Hiland. I checked the PRS Private Stock colors and it looks like "Black Burst." and with that curly maple top it looks AWESOME!
Don't get me wrong, I love Johnny, but I wish he wouldn't have gone the PRS rout; that is unless they would've made a Tele-like guitar for him. I really miss hearing the twang and behind his chicken pickin'.
Forgive me for saying this but being a rock player learning about this kind of music, it seems to me that even with his amplification setup he's avoiding the Tele twang on purpose. It's almost as if he's trying to cast his own sound and style and break away from the traditional country thing. What an amazing player though. I was searching youtube for a clean guitar player and man, did it bring up some refreshing surprises!!!
well yeah! that's because it's not a tele, it's a PRS!! lol all PRS's have their own sound. Johnny hiland is AWESOME! he can play any genre (except metal but who cares about that crap) with his own bit of johnny thrown in!
60thstrat: I've never heard that Hiland played for Alan Jackson live or that he was in music videos for him either...the only proof I have is from an earlier video of Alan Jackson's called "Mercury Blues" which, originally, Brent Mason played guitar on and, in the video, Keith Urban was pretending to play guitar (before anyone knew who he was).
Of course, it is possible that Hiland is Jackson's guitarist for live shows...or was at one time!
I only heard of Johnny about two weeks ago. My Marine Corps buddy, who owns J.P. Quarter & Co. out in CA, met Johnny at Namm and got me an autographed picture and CD. This guy is AWESOME. I want to play like that when I grow up. Oh, and for those of you who don't know J.P. Quarter & Co.: He makes THE best spun cones for resophonic guitars. Learned the art from Dopyera himself.
johnny is a wonderful player. i prefer the tone of his tele with the bardens, but fair dues to him - congrats on the signature model + i hope it increases folks' awareness of this awesome awesome player
wat r u talkin about ? hardly anyone is actually talkin bout his weight, i dont see the point to start arguing about when no one has been talking about it in the first place
The fact that you concentrate on someone's weight shows the fact that you are not a true musician!! Music does not know color, weight, gender!! Maybe if you practiced guitar more than type on youtube you might understand!!! I love watching fellow musicians!! Keep music alive!!!
i have an idea...maybe people should try listening to music with their eyes closed. so he is a heavy guy. so what, lots of people are. it doesnt matter what u look like, how big or small you are, what your age is, what color your skin is, how much hair you have, or any other screwed up ideas you come up with, what matters is the music he is makin... which is pretty damn awesome if you will shut the fuck up, close your eyes and listen!!!!!
No question @ being impressed. I'm actually drawn to the same mix of techniques that he uses with maybe a little more of a jazz influence and more string skipping in my legato. But of course I'm nowhere nearly as good as him LOL. he's inspirational in his command of various techniques and how he uses techniques outside their expected genres. truly unque and exciting. Plus it's fantastic to see someone who can manipulate his gear into so many exceptional tones ! WOW!
I believe that's just the default finish; though it looks very different from different pictures and in real life. The same pretty much goes with a lot with finishes.
fairbear, he is partially sighted, from what i have seen of him his sight is shot to bits almost completely, i cant get over his vast bulk/fingers either!!
he almost looks bored

tmua23: You know, I feel the same way as you do--I think his tone was quite a bit better when he used Teles...especially for country!

Actually, I've heard him shred metal before. He CAN play it all and play it well.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't he Alan Jackson's on the road/music video lead guitar player? Unbelievable player....

If all you focus on is this man's outward appearance, I think it shows the fact that you aren't a human being.

Great playing - Johnny is one of the greats, just check that touch, the bending, the tone, the phrasing all adds up to a very tasty and class act
