No offense meant here, but Kelly Clarkson can't touch Connie Francis - vocally or especially interpretationally. Connie sounds like she's aching, living out the lyric, while Kelly is just belting it out. Maybe it will come to KC with added maturity, but it's not there yet.

@JCMarra Actually, Connie did do some rock 'n' roll in the earlier part of her career. In '59, she put out an album called "Connie Sings Rock 'N' Roll Million Sellers", which has now been reissued on CD. (You can get it from Amazon.) I love the way she did "Tweedle Dee" and "It's Only Make believe". But of course, there's a big difference between early Elvis and Fats Domino songs, and the contemporary hard rock that Kelly does.....

Maybe not yet but she's only gotten better in my eyes. She's progressed vocally and not only technically but also interpretively and I think with a few more years she can go up there with the classics. As far as mainstream artists go, I do believe she is one of the few who can even give life to this kind of genre.

I love the albums she's making now, and seeing her do that material live just takes it to a whole different level of brilliant. So Rock on with that, Kelly. But I'm old school too & what a treat it would be to hear her put out some albums of material like this or covers of some great stuff like what she did on idol. Dude, I hear what you're saying because sometimes Kelly seems like the poster child for vocal strain, but she's still got all the goods vocally. I mean, case in point: did you hear her sing for the Pope? Brilliant! Her last run went WAY into the upper register and sounded crystal clear. That performance wasn't even on 6 days rest after a long grueling tour of Europe, AU & the States. Yeah, Kelly pushes it with her voice touring some upper register rock songs but she has chords of steel.

her voice was shot a lot of last year because she had like no rest and was non stop singing those really tough songs in her upper register. but it's fine now, its not permanent. she just needed rest.....search her performance of "Never Again" in Jonesboro, she sounds as good as ever!
