yeah it was 1st the Summit..home of the Houston Rockets..then renamed the Compaq center..then sold to Lakewood church, home of Joel Olsteen...I saw the last concert there in 2003..ZZ Top. the Rockets and a lot of major concerts now play at the Toyota center in Houston.
@DavyShalom Ok there Davy Shalom. Let me guess, you're Jewish and I'm supposed to either a) hate you or b) feel sorry for you? I don't hate Jewish people nor feel sorry for them in 2011, considering they now control most forms of mainstream media including radio, tv, film and most newspapers/magazines. I respect all races and religions, because me telling them how to live or what to believe is like them telling me how to live or what to believe and that would be wrong.
150,000 views. That is truly sad. Lady Gaga has like 85,000,000 views. The idea of talent has really changed. This music rocks. If you disagree, you taste is??????
@1cheweey Yeah it's always strange to see classic hit songs like this one with only a fraction of the views of someone today like Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber. That definitely has nothing to do with the quality though. Had YouTube been around back in the 80's when these songs were new, these songs would probably have a billion of views by now. But becuz it's mostly just us "old" timers (35 & up) watching these, they'll never reach those crazy numbers that the new acts do.
@vodude That's because the Jewish media bosses at the big record companies are pumping money in to promote the new manufactured music such as Lady gaga or Justin Bieber. I speak the truth and say that with respect to people of all religions and races.
Ric Ocasek is like Bob Dylan in a way. It's not about their voice, it's how they tell a story with their songs that stays with you a long long time...
This track was included in the Japanese release of "The Cars-Live 1984/1985, but was omitted(at the last minute) from the U.S.A. release, to the extent that the song was listed on the packaging of the early U.S.A. VHS copies, though the song is not on the tape. I've been offered big money for my Japanese Laserdisc, and I've always said "no". Undoubtedly, if the program ever appears on DVD, they'll screw up and we'll get the edited version...without "Magic".
Fellow fans, I found a report on The Cars Facebook that states that there is some talk about nominating them for Rock and Roll hall of Fame induction. I'm sure we all agree it is long overdue. I tried to create a link to the page but I think it's not allowed on Youtube. So go to cars Facebook page. You will find the thread about halfway down the page. You'll find the link to the petition there. Let's make this happen!
Yes, Benjamin definately notices someone in the audience. At 2:14 he mouths "how far can you take it?" with a little smile, and then at 3:46 the charming smile....sigh :) Oh Oh....he's magic!
man this album and song were huge in the summer of 84. remember a few of my friends went to this houston show but i missed it for some reason. never knew this show was pro shot. sweet!
Just my opinion, but I think they should release this DVD as a tribute to Ben Orr and the Panceratic foundation, just like they released the The Cars 1979 live
They actually performed in my hometown of Houston, TX the year before I was born (1985) . . I didn't even know that they were performing until I looked up their video right now. lol. I <3 the 80's songs, I may be an 80's baby . . . but I grew up to this in the 90's, that was all I listen to at the time.
Ric Ocasek has got to have one of the coolest looks in rock history. The whole band has the 80's rock image. Easton and Orr strengthen it. Definately one of the most underrated bands of all time
Guys, it really doesnt matter how te man looks. You could be pretty/ugly,fat/thin,black/white, i mean it really could not matter less, cause when you see your star rockin out it just doesnt matter anymore.
Actually many thousands of women would disagree with that comment, including his supermodel wife. But then, he probably wouldn't want to sleep with you either. ; )
i love this song finally i found it, i was looking for it, cause when it played on wizards of waverly place soundtrack copied by the honor society then he said hey that is my song back then lol
Great band, great song! They were dull as dishwater live but they're still my all-time favorite band. I saw this tour in '84. Sure miss Ben, he was a unique and superb vocalist, one of the best.
I am not a big Cars fan but Ric Ocasek is a talented dude. In my opinion, this is evidenced more by his production than with the actual music he made with the Cars which is ok but, let's face it, is not exactly mindblowing (just not my cup of tea). Surprisingly, this guy has manned the boards for such seminal and breaking rock, indie, punk, and hardcore acts as Weezer, Bad Brains, Bad Religion, Guided by Voices, and Suicide. Of course, there's also No Doubt but you can't win 'em all...
Looks, schmooks. The man had a wonderful voice and The Cars put out some great songs. I have learned slowly over time to never judge by a person's looks, but look to their talents and decency instead.

Man, this guy has got to be the most hideous rock star in human history. He got pistol whipped by the proverbial ugly stick and still made it big- RESPECT
Hey lev1athyn, you're a tool ... you've got a funny way of showing respect... still, you have the right to your opinion. We fans of Ric and The Cars wouldn't have him any other way.

I'm not trying to show respect nor am I trying to dis the guy. I'm not a Cars fan and I'm just calling it as I see it. Name an uglier rock star who's sold more albums and I'll send you a hundred dollars.
I have to agree Hubert, Steven Tyler and Mick Jagger have faces only a mother could love and both have sold significantly more records than Mr. Ocasek. You should get the $200. LEV1ATHYN, pay the man.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Are you KIDDING ME?! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but objectively Steven Tyler and Mick Jagger conform much closer to society's standards of beauty. Steven Tyler's lineage produced Liv Tyler, and Mick was the quintessential 60's sex symbol. Ric looks like a deranged D&D junkie who lives in his mother's basement.
Not kidding at all ... if Mick Jagger was ever considered a sex symbol it was based on something completely other than his looks. Liv Tyler is one beautiful woman but as for her dad Steven, sorry man, but dude looks like a lady ... and an ugly one at that. Many of these skinny rock dudes could pass for deranged junkies ... I wouldn't single Ric Ocasek out.
RIP Ben Orr. You guys were blasting on my tape deck during my high school days. The best band ever. most of all Loved the "Private affair with the Cars concert my friend won on MTV" Loved the private concert. She loved the Porsche 944 filled to the top with snickers bars. Even though Ben Orr passed away a few years ago, I'd love to see one more live concert. The Cars Rule.
I don`t think they looked bored..They weren`t teenagers no more, jumping and screaming on the stage. Serious musicians with lots of talent. To see and hear them play live would be a great experience for me. I miss them so much.
Board? Board? They'r not board. Check out Ben's expression to some young chick at the front of the audience at the 3.45 min mark. Sometime ago I saw Fleetwood Mac play at the end of their Worls Tour and all they could do was fight each other. Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham!! Nah these guys aren't bored - they are enjoying the lot - it is was the cool 80's look of most bands at that era
Prob most boring band to watch . . . but they had a hold on the catchy tunes! Loved them from day 1. Saw em in '79 Candy-O. I was impressed they always did a great job replicating their studio sound. New Wave is VERY difficult to replicate in a stadium.
One of their best delivered in a great era of music - the 80's. Not many mention it but Elliott Easton is a fantastic guitarist and David Robinson is a good drummer. Wish they had come to Australia before they split and we lost Ben - RIP
why did they have pre-recorded backing vocals and harmonys?...were they very hard to sing?...I can understand some of the synth parts but there were four other guys up there to sing for real.
I have this whole Houston 1984 concert on dvd and vhs....this song was NOT on it, and I dont recall them playing "Magic" in Seattle on the same tour (August 1984). Anyone remember if this was played each nite on the tour?????
I have that video as well. Magic wasn't on it, although it was listed on the box. Also, the show was broadcast on telly a bit later, and Magic was shown! I was absolutely furious - it's one of my favourite Cars songs.
They were Magic in concert, they stuck to the recordings and sounded great. They played Richmond, Va on this tour, it was great. I think Ric is still married to Paulina too, lucky bastid!
I saw the Shake it Up tour in Houston before this and caught the Heartbeat City tour in Austin. Incredible fun band, and a magic mix of vocals when they ensemble.
nice tune....these guys are good....background vocals seems like a tape.

I have that video as well. Magic wasn't on it, although it was listed on the box. Also, the show was broadcast on telly a bit later, and Magic was shown! I was absolutely furious - it's one of my favourite Cars songs.

Only 1 prob I have with this is god the Cars were such a cool small club band. Maybe 150-200. Summit is too big. Not the same.

Awesome! DVinoskey hit right on the nose. Stuck to the real songs yet didn't screw them up like alot of bands do...Excellent!
