I know Dr. Boyce Watkins is a smart guy but he lost me when he claimed Spice-1 is some sort of lyrical genius....he also failed to mention one of the reasons Ice-T dissed Soulja Boy was because he can't rap and when fans snaped back and said give him a break because he is only a kid Ice just pointed out that LL Cool J, Out Kast, Ice Cube and Mobb Deep were actually younger when they came out and they actually had something more to say becides just a snappy hook
This is a non issue now. Soldier Boys career is now officially over. Soulja Boy's new album only sold 46,000 copies in its first week. So it's officially over for him. Another one hit wonder bites the dust.
thats enough i'm going 2 bed i can go on 4ever about this topic. start from my 1st post at da bottom n read your way up. Sure da kids r making money dr. Watkins but da way they r getting it goes against what hiphop stood 4 upon its conception. take a look at my page n see my favorite videos and listen, ponder 2 yourself why arent "da todays lyricist" exceeding da lyrical content of "yesterdays lyricist"... listen n compare the old to the new and realize that this was not the intended direction.
ny, nj, and dc were so vital at one point to hip hop, thats where the most positive, talented, vibrant, educated, conscious black rappers came from. Here in ny and dc we go toe to toe ith the illest cracker on this got-dammed planet!! we kept the rest of our brothers state side a breast to the latest issues!! Where is that today Dr. Watkins?? we dont own the labels, we dont own the stations... who really decides who gets to hear whut? and who tells us whuts hot and whuts not no more?? THEY DO!
Imagine if all white people said fuk doing evertything else we gonna sing rock songs!! we all gonna be rock stars!! How would U2 exist?? How would guns and roses exist!! how could there have been careers for the greats! All our boys wanna do is rap, there are no greats like there used to b when the industry was a market for real lyricist! These kids are getting 15mins of fame, so many 1 hit wonders then they get thown out da back door with no education n then r forever ttrying 2 get put back on
hey Doc, i can go on but, u may never even see this, I get the feeling that you were never a hip-hopper, u may have break danced but for you it was a fad, just as it is for the whole 90 percent of the african american youth population who gave up on school and getting educated but are out here trying to rap cause now it's da supposedly da only way out of the ghetto and everyone wants to be stars over night and get that fast cash!! fuk the real artist who cant prosper no more.
u support the youth n this new energy in da music even tho it has been dumbed down from a 12th graders level of comprehension to that of second graders? as an artist i have seen first hand how da masses change due 2 an artist point of view! I remeber one of the things i didnt like about nas and biggie is that so many dropped out of school after they heard them both said fuk school and that they dropped out, the influence of whos hot at the moment is beyond any mc's understanding including yours.
I'm no psycologist but i figured that is the problem, most of us dont have degrees in psycology to determine what the long term affects are of being subjected to the same negative images being broadcasted over a television or a radio!! However i feel that the powers that b do, when a race of people n your country start using media devices as a tool to tell the people 2 fight da power.. u have to do something cause thats not a scenario that you want to happen.
We wore the african pendants, tried our best to educate each other n tell each other that hey!! we are gonna make it!! we told the kids say not to drugs.. most of us, theres a reason why the golden age of hip hop was during the late 80's and 90's! your an educated man, go pick up brand nubian, public enemy, a tribe called quest, dela soul, pete rock and cl smooth, nas, slick rick's albums and then compare it to what u hear on da radio today, there was balance to the messages being broadcasted!
Hip hop was actually born, cultivated and perfected in the east Dr. Watkins, During the 80's and 90's the black concious in the music was unprecidented, unlike today! Before the white owned record labels started to tamper and interfer with hat we could do or say we spawned public enemy!! brand nubian... i remember brothers were on the streets saying piece to each ther and to dead the violince... the niggas from ny knew we needed unity and put that message up front and center for the people!!
hip hop was about lyrical content and also uplifting the people n having fun, which was coined into the phrase "dropping jewels" thats y da generation from the 90's was so much more artistic n creative than todays genration. the music dr. watkins has such a psychological effect on our children its astonishing! please, b4 u speak on behalf of souljah boy do the research on what is actually being conveyed. With all due respect Dr. Watkins you do know alot but this 1, i cannot support your stance.
let me explain to you what the soulja boy song is all about... the superman is when a girl doesnt consent to sex, u wait until she goes to sleep then you jerk off, buss a nut on her back and the put da sheet on her back, the semen dries... and the sheet sticks to her back, and looks like a cape... hence forth the saying, superman! i respect ya but ya 9 minute speech... is invalid!! ice t was right to condem this child, for he lacks the basic understandings of what real hip hop was all about.
Boyce lost his tenure hahaha
