Anyone feel like addressing the issue that we are not a socialist society and also consider that many homeless are content to be so! This is a reality! Most homeless that are re-homed go back to the streets! It's very easy to get righteous, politically correct and feel like you would be the next world president when a romantic meaningful song plays from the 70's! But to be honest it's kinda ridiculous! Maybe the youtube comments section is where people should have their political rant. Personally, I can't be bothered having politcal arguments in this forum. I don't need to emotively relate - I have been at the bottom in London, so to me this is just another song about 'hey, sometimes life sucks'. Time for some PULP...
@ForgeValleys go do something useful and sign the CRISIS petition.
crisis.org.uk/pages/no-one-turned-away.html
It is shocking that single people are still ending up homeless and on the streets because the law does not protect them enough, 40 years after the first Crisis at Christmas. Most single homeless people are not considered to be in ‘priority need’ for social housing, meaning that the council has no duty to find them accommodation.
if you didnt know , this is mainly about the elderly irish in the streets of london who came over to work, as they grew older and couldnt afford to live or go back home , they ended up in the streets of london .
@Barrowslegion The Scottish and Polish have taken over as the London homeless now. The saddest thing is they are not old, many still in their early 20`s. Very sad indeed. We spend billions on the Olympics in London yet there are people sleeping outside tonight in sub zero tempratures, Very sad. Lovely song though.
@fleetwood1111 to 99% of the people poverty/homelessness is UNACCEPTABLE but the stigma of it makes it difficult for them to care. In Victorian times the 1% invested in the 99% to prevent riots because they were worried the French Revolution would also hit the UK. It really is a simple matter of CHANGING ATTITUDES and mentaility to poverty/homelessness.
The 1% also needs a kickstart to start investing in the SOCIETY that they live in GLOBALLY.
@fleetwood1111 We now have a GLOBAL ECONOMY so their is NO EXCUSE at all for poverty/homelessness. Ambassodrors from each country who are committed, intelligent and most importantly UNCORRUPTED, could work together to fight and win the battle against changing peoples attitudes and helping to tun the tide.
@Psychedynamo1 You're right, and I hope it happens. But in free market capitalism, extreme poverty (home and abroad) is considered an acceptable by product in the creation of extreme wealth. It will require a complete change in Western ideology to end this kind of social injustice. But I agree that in the meantime, we need to change our individual attitudes.
@fleetwood1111 A simple CHANGE IN ATTITUDE is required from everyone in order to remove the stigma of poverty/homelessness. People are afraid of the stigma. People in UK used to have same stigma against people who were made redundant in their job (not any more as it is so common now), and once generally held racist and anti-homosexual views. The GOVERNMENTS can encourage attitudes to change. It is not rocket science at all.
@TheHumanParaquat I agree with you in that it is the people if they are more human to each other rather inhuman, then problem solved, however, changing peoples attitudes to poverty/homelessness can be encouraged by government. Having a government representative from each country who is committed, intelligent and uncorrupted would be a good start.
homeless people do not pay tax, just think of the old who need help, as i see homeless, is not to waste my tax money on, do not have kids if you do not have money to feed them,
@davidmaustin1 Remember this money you speak of is just a concept, you can it see and feel it but you can't feel that 'homeless' persons sadness you can only see it. You can't see love but you see the effects. Money is evil, but sadly we can't live without out. Homeless people are just like me and you, but have life much harder.
Tell me why this song is lovely to people? The lyrics are about people who are suffering poverty / homelessness. The last line of the song tells it all. "And a world that doesn't care".
This song could have been written yesterday. Nothing changes, because the rich will always be ahead of and in charge of the game; whatever country you live in.
beautiful song beautifully sung and only Ralph McTell can sing it the way it is meant to sound beats all the modern day C..P that we constantly have to listen to blaring from clubs cafe's and through car stereos
A beautiful poignant song which brings back lovely memories of childhood and singing the song at school assemblies. Makes me want to go back to the 70's, those were the days!
@alemaalteviden I sense your frustration in something that is not quite so simple, perhaps! However tell me isnt it much more simple for folk to help those in need, than it is to build a rocket ship and send a man to the moon? or does the stigma of those suffering poverty / homelessness make this issue way too complicated? In fact so complicated that it causes others to turn a blind eye and sweep the issue under the carpet? Govts could raise the issue and encourage attitudes to change to reduce%
@paul196824, I'm pleased things came good in the end for you, altho jobs are scarce with the recession. I agree, most people find it too anxiety riddling for them so they sweep under the carpet, not good. Well the government need to put a task force together of people who actually can help in a good empathic way, no sweeping it under the carpet, it can be done if they get the right people who are committed, intelligent and CARE!, to reduce homelessness/poverty %, on a worldwide scale.
alot of ppl cant handle the pain others go through so sweep it under the carpet iam saying this from life experience,s i was homless for some time never begged i lived on a few qiud i think it was £2.75 a day of the social security slept in tescos car park in a card board box then i got a flat and done well brought my son up on my own he works got his own home well with is son and girlfriend happy ending realy just need a job now lol
watchful38, yes mental illness is a problem and in most cases is caused by alcohol/drugs used to ease the pain of being on the streets. These people suffering temporary mental illness due to being homeless would require hospital treatment to manage the drug withdrawal symptoms, then somewhere to live to find their feet and lick their wounds with the help of group/individual counselling support , and then a job. It can be done if the government and society are committed to solving the issue.
We must remember it's not just poverty and homelessness. An underlying factor is mental illness and drug abuse. How do you eliminate these evils? While individual charity is most laudable, the problem requires the resources of Government. The task is enormous but we must not throw up our hands. As one President said in his inaugural address: "Let us begin." Some may say, "Why doesn't God do it?" No, God wants us to meet the task. God wants us to shine! God wants us to act fully as human beings!
@bob4yvo Thats sounds like a plan ;-) I dont know where youre from but Im in London and there are so many empty offices,,centre point for one,,they open them at Christmas so why not all year,,,I really hope that you win the lottery ,Its nice to know there are still people in this world that care,,;-)xx
@mixwell1983, fair point, however poverty/homelessness needs to be given a MUCH higher profile in order to eradicate and gradually reduce the % down to manageable levels. Committed, uncorrupted, highly intelligent government officials represented by each country could erradicate this problem. The higher profile would give the impetous for the tide to change from monetary profit towards folk gaining a spiritual moral satisfaction to put right something which we all individually know is so wrong
The governments of the world should get together to plan how they can help disadvantaged people suffering poverty/homelessness to get back on their feet. This is a deep social issue that folk generally shy away from. How difficult can it be really? If we can put man on the moon, then surely we can put a man in a job?
@Psychedynamo1 - There is no motivation to help out our needy who are suffering because there is no money to be made by the government. Putting a man on the moon in the 60's was mainly to beat the space race and prove the US was #1. Sadly with all the money we drop into bullshit, if we used a fraction of it to help out the needy we would significantly lessen the homeless and/or needy peeps but there's not profit or money making so our govt gives us the middle finger n blows money on dumb shit.
@Psychedynamo1 Then I ask you my friend, if it's all so simple, why let others do it? Why would you keep it for the government? Why aren't you running the world yet, or can you only solve problems when you are on youtube? Or did you just want some thumbs up?
@Psychedynamo1 What a lovely thought, my friend. This disadvantage was happening in the 1800's, 1900's, right up until today, no-one did anything. It's naive to think any government will care about it now.
I sing this as my dad plays guitar. It's such a beautiful song. It makes him cry cry when I sing. But, I cannot compare myself to Ralph McTell :) The way he sings it is so truthful
What a classic primary school assembly song, but it's so deep, didn't really appreciate the lyrics then. Have good memories singing this loudly in assembly with the whole school with our cockney accents "STREET OF LANDAN!" LOL, good times.
I went to see him in concert in Adelaide some 20 odd years ago. That great imitation Aussie singer come songwriter Eric Bogle was the support act. Great combination. But a few too many pre drinks saw me doze off during his first song and my dear wife at the time thought it was best to leave me flaked out until after the concert. To teach me a lesson, so to speak. Wive's are good at that. Anyway, I never got to hear him sing this song, or any others.
My Dad told me, when he was in his late teens (about 30 years ago now), he was in his nans living room playing 'Streets Of London' on the piano, and then all of a sudden Ralph Mctell walks in!
Turns out, he is my dads first cousin once removed, or something like that lol
@Equanotic : my dad did the same. he could sing it in absolut key. in my mind he sang it better. a song that will haunt me in a nice way......FOREVER!!!!!
now hum the melody of Pachelbel's Canon in D to these chords or find Canon in D on youtube and singalong the words this song....see? Music by Johann Pachelbel.
I want to tell you a nice story fron London, 1993.....driving from Kensington down to Brighton on Sunday....at red light stopping, a young girl was whasing wind screen for a some pennies; and now she came to me asking to clean my screen; and that day I was utterly depressed...
I said to her; Give me a hug, instead, and she did, and never shall I forget it....and with a two smiles I faded into the London rush....feeling much better
I saw a professional beggar once in the streets of london in my dream, PROFESSIONAL says I because he don't beg for himself instead for those victims of poverty. but then I was awaken by this song when I set my phone in alarm..
I have seen this guy play acoustic and i tell u what the place just falls apart with his emotion and playing. wonderful! wonderful! guitar player hes truly under rated hes needs more rep he so much better than all these other acoustic guitarists of this day and age respect to him. His other Albums i love too (im not just a streets of london fan) :D
I once have known such peoples. And I can say, they are not bad. They all had their bad times in life, and that was the reason for this homeless life.
This was a hit when I was young. Sad to say that all these years on and the situation is as bad now as it was then. For all our technology we have not really improved the lot of those at the very bottom of the heap.
lived as an immigrent in london for 11 years and thinking back now i know i was so close to being homeless so many times..most through my own fault..but i survived and came home, not with alot but with what meant most to me,my kids,i was lucky, saw too many that were'nt and can level with them, not only there but back home too..as zutalors said 'there by the grace of god go i' true n maybe next time we walk past them remember that....
Loneliness affects us all at some time or other, for reasons real or imagined. What's important is our response. Ralph's response was an emphatic, dismissive message to his friend in this song. I hope it worked out well for him. I've listened to all versions of this song for over 40 years now, and Ralph's appraisal of real, lonely everyday people who keep going always makes me sit up and listen. I don't even care he used Pachelbel's fabulous music to hijack us, in fact I love that he did.
This is for those people that are less fortunate than ourselves. they don`t have all the things we take for granted ie cars, internet, heating, tv, etc
It`s such a sad song , but it`s also a timeless classic
because they don't listen to the story, but excpect some different song. well atleast that is what i think because this song is amazing and the lyrics are really touching.
same here. i have no idea how it happened i think i must have skipped a few years. all the song now a days are rubbish and hardly any of them get stuck in my head on a good way. but this song did.
@Arwina1985 Most of my friends listen to music that just sounds rather immature I'm the only one that still listens to classical rock it's all about using women as "sex objects" and some of these girls actually like this sort of music.
@PyrotechnicRabbit I have seen this first hand what my father has been through after World War 11, most of the Veterans came home to 0 0 0,, a hero today and unvalued tomorrow. Many that I have spoken to suffered the same plight. Came back with hearing loss and Veteran's Affairs told them go home you are fine. They didn't even have the technology to test hearing until approx. 30 years after World War 11. Volunteer to give them a pension at 86 years old, when most of them had already died.
@bigcree I have read and heard he was a most perverted Zionist. How he threatened the boys to shut their mouths about his sick perverted advances plus his follow through He was some demon from hell. If his spirit comes around me, I have just the thing waiting for him.
@RWinzo Kissinger has to be some sort of mind controlled Entity and non Human. Same for Ari Fleischer and Michael Chertoff. These are all similar Drones, cut from the same mold and carrying the same cold, programming. So far adrift from humanity it staggers the mind. How could anyone be so cold , heartless and vindictive in a calculated way as these Ghouls? They are real monsters and should be thrown in a vat of hot mercury.
@PyrotechnicRabbit Thank you for sharing this. The same story is told thousands of times every year for centuries. Where has it got us with all that death and destruction, still on the brink of more war at the liars behest.
Songs with meaning sung from the heart will always survive. Saw Ralph perform this at the Thebarton Theatre in Adelaide, Australia, many years ago. Another great singer/songwriter Eric Bogle was the co act. They do "pair" well together as for those who know Eric would know all is songs have a deep meaning. Like "wishes were fishers". And I think a drop of Glenfiddy helped inspire.
This song and singer was the cause of the first incendiary row between my fiancée and me. She was in the final year of her Pharmacy degree, and I was serving in Ulster as a military pilot - that could be a tad tense and character-forming.
I'd made a tortuous trip for a week-end leave, and I wasn't thrilled when told of tickets to a Saturday evening concert.
My crime was to fall asleep in the concert!!
She never did accept my praise of McTell's restful performance.

One of the greatest songs ever to make one hold in and (try to) think what is going on all around us....
I heard it first at the age of 7 - at that time, I simply liked the melody..
Later, when learning English ( I am of German origin) - at some 15-16- I really got what it is all about...
Today I am 47, and it'e song, and the idea it carries, are still with me...
Isn't everyone of us worth having a living in pride and joy?.

The governments of the world should get together to plan how they can help disadvantaged people suffering poverty/homelessness to get back on their feet. This is a deep social issue that folk generally shy away from. How difficult can it be really? If we can put man on the moon, then surely we can put a man in a job?
Psychedynamo1 4 months ago 35

Or did you just want some thumbs up?
alemaaltevinden 3 months ago
@Psychedynamo1 What a lovely thought, my friend. This disadvantage was happening in the 1800's, 1900's, right up until today, no-one did anything. It's naive to think any government will care about it now.

Songsfromtheheart1 7 months ago
My Dad told me, when he was in his late teens (about 30 years ago now), he was in his nans living room playing 'Streets Of London' on the piano, and then all of a sudden Ralph Mctell walks in!
Turns out, he is my dads first cousin once removed, or something like that lol

That was just the name of this German (I think?) 70's pop show
with the hits of the day. You shouldn't take the name too litterally -
but not the natural place to play it, I agree.
