In reality the racoon parents were sadists and were malnourishing their child, baby racoon fell ill shortly afterwards and was hospitalized, the parents lost custody and the mother went to prison for a while.

Baby racoon was sent to a foster home and had a troubled childhood, turned to drugs and died of an overdose several years later.
