  • Well done! And...hakama is not a trophy, it's part of a uniform. Sometime people love their hakama more than aikido itself. That's the real shame.

  • wow- great posture, really smooth movements. excellent form!

  • @godisagui thank you for you kind words. but there's always plenty to learn... :)

  • hes 6kyu, and have hakama, this is bullshit. respect the art.

  • Very impressive for the 5th kyu test. Congratulation on shodan.

  • @brigantine88 thanks mate. =)

  • hakama???? kyu???

you can not wear hakama in kyu degree, this is not acceptable...

  • @defexthor The Founder required all students wear hakama Regardless of Their degree

  • @ElSiNodaL

but this situation changed next years. also all student of ueshiba has dan degrees n another martial arts.

  • were are the belts? I take ITF tae kwon do im a 5th gup blue stripe and we have belts, do they???

  • Oh, well done! You look very smooth -- I'm impressed.

  • Man you have no respect for this martial art wearing hakama at this stage! You must be fancy yourself so much...Just wondering how good you are if comes to real deal?

  • @lorddrac1 what do you mean by disrespect? I think many hakama people do disrespect the art by being arrogants. I got my Hakama with the 6th Kyu in a ASU dojo and used it with pride and modesty. Then I changed to a Ki Aikido dojo, where you use the hakama in 3rd Kyu. I'm 4th Kyu in Ki Aikido now and I have my Hakama waiting until my 3rd Kyu. I would use it now, but will wait, since I have realized that I have much more to learn.

@lordosaya, great test... what Kyu you have now?

  • @gfavaria thanks, i've recently graded for shodan. the video of the grading (and my others up to this point) is also uploaded on my channel. cheers.

  • the music is suck!

  • New Age Garbage.

  • Wow, inspiring to someone who has just begun training. Your Ukemi are beautiful :o)

  • Hi, well done. I have just started training and found this video inspiring. Your ukemi are beautiful :o)

  • Compared to some other 5-th kyu videos, this one looks like a shodan test :)

Not without flaws, but quite impressive

  • you make many elementary mistakes of which I will not speak because it would take a long time. Just one thing, kokyu-ho..impossible to work as you do it...about the hakama, I think it's beautiful to look at but as theschnitter said, it tends to conceal bad footwork. not to everyone though so be carefull about that;) btw, is that all? my 5th kyu gradng took almost two hours:D

  • I was just wondering what the song is that you have used on the video.....

  • @flatpackpanda This is Marcus Eaton, End This War :)

  • keep ur hands up until u bow to at the end. dont let uke walk behind u unless his hand is at his chest as a sign that he will not attack. if he doesnt do this u should always face him with ur hands up. good job. keep it up.

  • Why are you wearing hakama???? You need to earn the right to wear them !!! Strange club !!!

  • ahahahah dont yell at someone u dont know

and youre wrong. The hakama was back i nthe days in the dojo of O-sensei u had to wear a hakama from the first time u stepped on the tatami. But after the WWII hakamas were to expensive for many man so their asked osensei if they can train without an hakama.

Your strengh comes from youreself not from things u are waering.

  • Btw the hakama hides ure footwork and movements so its good for senseis to see ure footwork and know a days thats a major reason to not waering a hakama as a rookie

  • hey theschnitter, thanks for bringing up the historical and rational contexts of hakama wearing.

and i had a chat with marknic79 about his manner of speaking in another video, so it's all good. ;) cheers mate.

  • no problem :D i didnt like that thing to earn a hakama but im didnt waering one either

btw. the Exam looks very nice and deepminded where do u train and learn?

and another Q do u wash your Obi ? because read something to not wash them cause ure Experience is gathered in the Obi ?

  • i mainly train at the University of Tasmania Aikido Club; i learn everywhere, from everyone. ;)

i only wash my obi once a few months - not so much because i fear my experience getting washed away, but simply because it gets really stiff after i wash it. if it's true that my experience gets washed away when i do that, then i'm deep trouble... hehe.

  • Some dojo do things the traditional way where everyone wears hakama regardless of rank.

  • thought the same thing

usually, you can get the hakama with 4th kyu

  • @marknic79 some dojos give all students hakama due for modesty. mine doesnt but i know ones that do.

  • 5th with hakama? so impressive XD

    good vid, thx for posting

  • Great video!

    What's the song called?

  • I wanted to know too.. Been searching for a few days.. Lordosaya was kind enough to tell me he searched on audioswap but could not locate it again... If anyone finds it let me know please.. thx.

  • I have to say that your ukemi looks so damn smooth. how long have you been training to this particular day? I'm doing aikido for about a week now and my ukemi sucks really. ;)

  • thanks for that mate - this was my second grading (i didn't record my 6th kyu grading back then), and I think it was about 12-14 months after I started training.

one thing you'll realise about aikido after a while is that there is ALWAYS so much MORE to learn. haha. even now, i'm still working on getting my ukemi to be smoother and quieter amongst other things.

it's only been a week for you, but it's a never ending road, so you better get used to this feeling mate. ;)

  • I knew what I was in for when I signed up at my Dojo. And let me tell you I'm willing to go all the way. It's probably going to take me years until I can say I'm halfway satisfied with my skills. But I'm sure it's well worth the effort. And I get the feeling there's so much more to Aikido than just plain selfdefence.

    Have a good one.

    Later,

  • Whats the song?! :D

  • he shouldn be wearing a hakama hs doing 5th kyu lol what a sham kids an amateur i do aikido also

  • Nice flow.

As for hakama, I would advise getting rid of them altogether. They only increase the risk of needless injury, require more money to be spent on the costume, disguise body movements so as to make the art harder to learn, and finally take time to put on, fold up etc. And all of this, for what gain?

  • history! thats enough for a reason ;) I kind of agree there are no practical meaning, but in my club we start wearing hakkama at 3:e kyu, and that kind of work as some kind of driving force for me to reach 3:e kyu to be able to wear the hakkama. I kind of think it works like a status symbol.

  • I agree. It works like a status symbol. Overall, I am more interested in the essence of things/ invisible stuff.

As for history, it's never a reason... only an excuse, and a poor one at that.

I've seen some pretty severe injuries result from people wearing hakama. How does anyone justify that to a student's family, especially if the student is the provider?

  • Of course, banning of the hakkama would not stop me from doing aikido. What kind of severe injuries? The only thing I can think of is that the feet/toes get tangled up, and if thats the case just shorten the hakkama a little.

And the history is kind of important to me. It makes it more interesting. I dont train Aikido for self defense reason, i do it for the overall experience, a combination of cultural and social interaction and there the history is important.

  • The worst one is a torn groin from uke getting foot caught in nage's hakama while heading off into a roll. But then, I guess that's part of the whole experience, eh?

And for the record, I would not suggest banning hakama. I would simply urge it to be a voluntary custom rather than mandatory for yodansha.

  • @PiedPiper97601 well, hakama is usually worn by those of the higher rank and they should be able to prevent themselves and all those around them from all possible injuries. so I wouldn't say those injuries happened because of hakama but because either uke or tori sucks:D

  • @PiedPiper97601 for the sake of tradition and all that hakama represents? like 7 samurai virtues? since aikido is all based on samurai principles and stuff...

  • I liked your techniques i think they are clean and with good rythm, i liked you are not hurry in doing the techniques

  • I want hakama too :3

  • why do you have hakama at 5th kuy

  • my club traditionally encouraged people to wear the hakama after their first grading (i had my 6th kyu then), not only when they are yudansha. however, my dojo has recently affiliated (this year) with another aikido group that expects hakama to be worn by yudansha, so i continue wearing it during training at my home dojo, but i won't wear it at other dojos or during big seminars. my next grading (2nd kyu) video will probably be see me in just a gi. ;)

  • thank you! this is great to know in case i come across dojoes such as yours!

  • My problem with watching Aikido is that it is all grappelling moves. I have never studied Aikido and it just seems that if you miss or make a single mistake you are done for. Although it seems to be really cool, what about fist to fist? Seems you just use the rotation and strength of your body to get an opponent on the ground.

  • hi Keltani, you have pretty good observation for someone who hasn't done aikido =). to clarify on your comments/questions, we also train in dealing with strikes (opened hand and closed fist), not just grappling.

the idea of 'one-hit-kill' is a very Japanese thing. the idea is that it's rooted in sword-work, one clean cut and it's game over; it's not a sport where ppl trade hits all day long.

rotation plays a big role in aikido, but there are a lot of other factors in its techniques.

  • Well, I have never actually taken any serious martial arts classes and so there are some things that I know I don't understand. Aikido is a great style it seems, but whenever I spar with anyone it seems that as long as you understand how their style is defeating you then you can turn it around and start winning.

I have also sparred with a lot of black belts and it seems that any style is about one-hit kills or combination kills that are generally based off of one hit.

  • You have a legitamate point but I would advise you not to judge the art just from watching a few videos on youtube or by watching steven seagal movies. Keep in mind that you are watching two people practicing the same art and the techniques you see in the video will not look like that on the street when attacked by someone who does not study the same art.

  • At my Dojo u dont get to use the Hakama untill 3rd Kyu, i kindo like that more gives u something to work for. December i go up for 3rd Kyu Grading so hope to get mine :)

  • U know, martial arts can be unfair sumtimes becuz its not fair to get like the 8th kyus getin thrown around that much.

  • there's no 8th kyu.

  • There is no 8th Kyu, and anyone being Uki will get their time being tori when they grade too. I think that is very fair myself

  • you shouldn't roll directly up your spine, you should ideally go from one side to the other, spending minium time on your spine!

  • that was a very good test. you move well; as though you have studied another martial art. According to the hombu dojo website women can wear the hakema once they have a solid understanding (i hesistate to use the term, "master") falling. The men wear it after shodan ranking. I kind of like the idea of all wearing it; it creates a unified spirit and minimizes ego. i've been training for just over one year. i'm looking for a new dojo (reasonably priced) in manhattan.

  • you did a great job! keep it up

  • What's the japanese song called? It rocks.

  • Yui - Life

  • 5th Kyu hakama? What is the reason for that?

Also to be slapping the mat with both arms at the same time basically sends a shock to your shoulders with nowhere for it to transfer through your body, Ideally a ukemi should be landing on ONE hip, slap mat and to roll onto the other and slap mat, giving any energy time to go up through body and out the other side. Also you'll damage your back.

  • the impact is absorbed by the arms, the motion in your back (there's a small back rolling like movement when you hit the floor) allows for the impact to be absorbed. if this ukemi truly is useless, then trust me it wouldn't be taught. kthxbye.

  • This is the perfect music to listen to while falling down and slamming my elbows on the ground. Thank you for filling that musical void I get every day from 5 - 7 pm.

What a waste of time this nonsense is.

  • :D Lol, this is funny

  • wow trapni 10 years so that means ur in 3rd Dan

  • nice to see 5 th kyu in hakama, they really look impressing and inspiring to all new comers. your sensei must be the one in the backround, he is good he creates sincere aikidokas. he is a real sensei.

  • hehe, remembers me of my first graduation. hope you'll do fine in future, too ;)

  • anyone got a tip or two for a semi- frustrated aikido beginner?

  • keep practicing :)

  • i've been practicing for 10+ years in the very same dojo, and then went out for half a year to some other dojo (and very other style) because I had to work there for my company for a while. I really had to force me not to leave the first lesson early, so frustated have I been, because of this way of teaching and aikido style.

However, I found myself in having learned something from them, anyway.

Maybe you didn't find your style yet, so keep practicing, and your eyes wide open ;)

  • excelente!!! ^_^

  • I just made my 5th kyu yesterday it was very rigorous compared to this testing. I was facing quite a bit, I however love the harmony that ensued in this testing.

  • today i'm gonna to do 5th kyu ... i'm so nervous ...

  • after the yokomen at 4 minutes up to 4.50 was simply amazing

its my favorite technique up to this stage of training,

i love how you flow, you seemed to be very relaxed yet firm which is what many people have trouble with. congradualtions on getting 5th quo

  • wahhh really cool ^^ i wonder when i'll b taking my 5 kyu exam... mayb in 1 n half yr time XD

    congrats!

by now u're probably preparing for shodan? or already passed it :P

  • i just started aikido and i hope that i will be strong like u one day!!:D very nice video

  • i have just taken this grading about a month ago and i found it is alot eayser when you do are actually up there doing it,

  • Nice techniques! I'm a 6th Kyu, and we're currently learning the techniques in this video.

For how long have you been practicing? I've been at it for 5 months, and my techniques are nothing like your; much worse.

  • i've been practicing for close to 2 years now.. but for this grading, i was about a year into aikido then. thanks for the comment. all the best in your training. :)

  • At our dojo, in canada, females are allowed to wear hakama at sankyu, and males at shodan. Here mudansha do weapon practice as well. I just recently had my gokyu test as well, yours seems a lot different. Btw your techniques flow really nicely.

  • thank you. all the best with your training. =)

  • cool...

but actually you did a nikkyo ura with sankyo lock at the end..

  • very sharp!! first person to hv noted this observation!

the reason is that the principal in my dojo has a preference for a sankyo lock, because he believes it has the most control - so at least for grading purposes, we're requested to use that waza.

  • Wow, you are very good for 5 kyu, how long have you been practising? I've seen 1 kyu with less understanding.

  • thanks. i started in early 2006, and this grading was in april.. so hmm, over a year for the 5 kyu grading?

  • Wow. You really did great. I am very new to aikido (just over two weeks into it) and was lucky enough to witness a 5th Kyu test on Sunday. Your technique and flow was FAR superior. You seem to be a natural and have a terrific teacher(s). Congratulations. I'll have to check out your 4th Kyu test too.!

  • thank you. and welcome to aikido. :)

  • different schools have different requirements re: the hakama. my school allows, and in fact encourages, its students to wear the hakama after their first (6th kyu) grading onwards.

  • I have my 5th kyu grade next week, but why do you wear an hakama already on the 5th kyu? In the Dutch Aikikai federadion its blue hakama from the 3th and black belt and hakama from 1th dan.

  • cool video, it was nice to watch! the aikido I'm training is a very different style so it was interesting to see how other styles look like, anyways, the important thing is to keep practicing what you like! how often do you get graded?

  • there are usually 2 gradings a year, but most people grade about once a year... at our school, we move up very slowly - and i guess it's mainly because it doesn't really matter that much to us. we're fairly small, and we train together regardless of rank anyways. it's more of a personal challenge than anything else. :)

  • it's more or less the same at our school, it's more important for us to fully understand what we should know for the gradings than just grading quick. and we also do not wear different colored belts except black and white. do u do that?

  • mmm.. i think we differ in another couple of ways again. the emphasis on gradings are so low, only a tiny fraction is spent on syllabus work. most of the time, we just keep on training regularly - and the grading just happens to be there. haha. we do follow the coloured belts systems. however, as u might hv noticed, everyone is encouraged/allowed to wear the hakama as well.

  • Congrats on 5th kyu :)

  • thanks.. i'm actually looking forward to grading for my 4th kyu next month. lol. cross my fingers that i'll be able to post up a good vid then! ;)

  • 5th kyu?..and you're wearing a hakama?

  • my dojo allows, and in fact, encourages all students to wear the hakama after their first grading. we also do some weapon work at mudansha (non-black belt levels), which may be uncommon in some schools. hope that helps explain things a bit :)

  • i see, what style of aikido is this?and which country?i do weapon too at mudansha levels..doesnt really matter tho but its just wearing the hakama seem very diff to me

  • it's no big deal really. if you look at the history, O-Sensei only allowed people *not* to wear hakama to save money after the world war. anyhow, i train with the Fuji Ryu Aikido Federation of Australasia.

  • The seven pleats present in the hakama represented the 7 virtues of the samurai (budo in general) of which O sensei required all of his students to understand. In the begining, O sensei's dojo was quite a colorful one as hakama of every sort were worn by his students.

  • My particular club does not follow this rule except when it comes to gender, women wear hakama regardless of rank. The practice of dan only ranks wearing the hakama is realitively new. I do not feel it is true to the art to treat the hakama as an almost elitest trophy. If fortune and god so wills I will one day have a modest dojo in which everyone will wear the hakama and understand its meaning.

  • Are you sure it was for 5th kyu? I know guys who are less smooth and clean and they are in Dan level! Congratulations! Your Aikido future is mighty bright!

  • hahahaha! awW~ man, c'mon.. you're making me blush. i've still got long ways to go for this neverending journey :) but thank you.. your kind words give me that extra bit to train even more! cheers.

  • Tell me something, if this is what your teacher makes out of 5th Kyu students (amazing!) do you have any videos of any fellow students of yours giving for shodan? I would love to watch something like this! I am only at 3rd kyu yet and, yes, the path is long and ardous. Cheers from Greece!

  • haha, we're a fairly small club and don't have that many people doing gradings, especially yudansha level. and i was using my personal camcorder that day, so i was little stingy with the videotapes - sorry! but you can watch the randori bits of some of the other kyu gradings if you want. just look for the 'aikido randori' video on my page. ;)

  • Train in Hobart now. We have a dojo on Macquarie Street. Just a small group of us. We have saturdday classes 1030- 1230 if you're interested. We train tues, wed and thurs nights (",)

  • I trained at the utas around 12 months a few years ago. A variety of styles is good- i think i've trained in 4. Besides the fundamentals are the same for any style- only the expression is different.

  • ahh~ good on ya mate. planning on dropping by the dojo anytime soon? ;)

  • You have a good understanding of balance and posture. Do you follow Fuji Ryu at UTas or your sensei's style, German guy- can't think of his name. Do you train on saturdays or tuesday nights.

  • appreciate the compliment :) you've been to our dojo i would assume? lol. the "German guy" is the senior instructor at the Uni dojo, but we are all under the Fuji Ryu Aikido Federation of Australasia. 'style'-wise, i guess i'm picking up a bit from all my senseis, and although it can be a lil' confusing at times, i learn a lot from all sides as well. we don't hv classes on saturdays, but we have training on tues, thurs and fri nights at the uni.

  • Congratualtion on your pass, it was nicely done, smooth, clean and sharp. i'm soon to be going for my grading too. did you practice with a partner before grading or did practice solo in preparation for the grading?

  • thank you for your kind words. i had a couple of practice sessions with my uke, but he was busy with work, so i had to practice the techniques with other ppl most of the times - but i don't think it's possible to do aikido solo in general(??) - aside from basic ukemi i guess. good luck for your grading!

  • you should practice with as many uke as possible, its not good to have the same uke every time you train, each uke reacts differently. you could practice aikido on your own, a sort of tai chi
