That is overly unsafe for your hand to be sitting on the piece & thumb resting on tool rest. Anyone watching this that is new to wood turning, PLEASE do NOT do that, Veterans become over-comfortable with their machines; But NO ONE should EVER do what he is doing there. A smaller wood lathe is mostly capable of taking fingers & in some serious cases, Hands. Just remember, SAFETY
philippe has just published his second book in which he gives his vision on the role of artists and craftsmen in our liberal societies.it's here , in the description of the video ... full text in french/////
How can I contact him to purchase tops like that? I've been trying for years to find tops with a higher spinning point and lower center of gravity so that they won't fall over.
Philippe is NOT on the web,and his spintops are only sold from his little shop and workshop in the countryside of Burgundy ! but ,you can write to him,he will answer your questions about how to lower the gravity center...you can also purchase these tops at a cost of around 4.5 euro ..his adress :

hello shazam! it's not a jaw chuck, it's a "gobelet" chuck, which fits M33-3,5
it's in fact a cylinder here a 40mm diameter , in which you insert the wood,
it holds very firmly
a little more time consuming than a jaw chuck , but very securit

this is not a string , it is a piece of wire of small diameter
you can use a copper or brass or iron thread to burn the wood
depending on the thickness of the mark you want
it's better to cut a groove first ...

@b21tracer how can he hold the piece of tree when its spinning without hurting himself?
lordem4 7 months ago
@lordem4
when the piece of wood is already round and the speed of the lathe not too fast , under 2000rpm
it doesn't hurt at all ,! it's a way to "feel" the finish... all wood turners do that :--))
what is unusual is the one-hand manipulation of the spindle gouge
