"Complex object manipulation" and "teaching the robot to talk" requires both a working skin for good/bad/important feedback and an artificial brain which is able to learn. Both features are missing in this robot, so it won't learn on its own. And if they try to solve it with programming, they will go under within a sea of bugs.
