  • 3 weeks at nº 1 in my list in 1990

  • Brilliant, yes, and still a breath of fresh air in the new century

  • I love how the "whoo whooo" from courtesy to the devil comes in at the end

  • Lets do Thusday night and Friday on Tuesday night !

  • Best song ever

  • Dont you wonder which one of these guys said,(stick with me baby and I'll let you play in one of our videos, we're gonna be big someday)?

  • @rebobbo1 ...alll 3 of them...... at the same time.

  • Still amazing. If ever World Party comes to Florida, I'll work out a way to see that concert.

  • To show you somthing new and somthing true.

Wisdom. Jesus tells the world of men what they must do to become just like him.

Wisdom ask. Then why cant they do it.?

    Wisdom ask. Walk on water.?

Wisdom says. there understanding of the works of Jesus is WRONG.

Bible tells you that there isnt but two witnesses.

Wisdom ask. Then what are they witnessing to.

Wisdom says the sins of their fathers is what they witness to.

Wisdom ask. Who wrote the bible.?

    ROAR

  • I wish I could show you something true today, sorry dude.

  • Around the same time, this album came out along with Michael Penn's and Jellyfish's first albums. It was a great time for pop music.

  • Yeah this guy is a genius....musically and lyrically.... there will never be another Wallinger.... so sad that he doesn't play anymore or at least can't see in the recent past or foreseeable future... it is times like this where I wish I was the richest in the world cuz I can guarantee you there would be a world party going on everyday with this guy!!! Karl (as if u r going to read this) you are the bomb and have rocked my world every time I listen to ur music... you are the lyric-man...

  • @Mazzi2007 He still plays... World Party was at South By Southwest 2011....

  • @rdirump Is there any video of that show? I can't find anything past 2008.

  • more cow bell...

  • I've never seen this video. Great song.

  • goodbye jumbo was really alternative . Summer of 90 this was starting a new trend. watching mtvs 120 minutes and wore goodbye jumbo out on cassette..

  • wow.inside my tvr never stopped to wonder why.ha ha fantastic.the clocks will all run backwards and the the sheep will have 2 heads.brilliant

  • This song, although somewhat reminiscent of Sympathy, stands well on its own - 'nuff said.

  • why does this sound so much like "sympathy for the devil" whoo whoo!?!?!?!

  • "Goodbye Jumbo" was one of the *best* albums I've ever bought. The vinyl got played so much, I eventually went out and bought the cd! Dear Karl, it's been now more than 20 years I still say THANK YOU FOR SUCH AN INSPIRATION AND WONDERFUL MUSIC.

  • Great song...fun time in my life too!

  • Great song! Heard it on the radio tonight.

  • I absolutely LOVE this song!

  • Thanks, babe.

  • a man found a treasure buried in a feild but had to put the treasure back untill the feild could be paid for another man comes along and finds the treasure and now the treasure is gaint pearls master of the feild it has been paid for treasure SPIRIT OF TRUTH any boby can go for you are all like pure gold to the master of the feild

  • @roar5952 Hey why don't you spam some other video?

  • world party son of man return sins of the world paid for any body can go if you have the faith that a man can be GOD any body capable of becoming just like me and greater things he can do the words of jessus

  • Always loved the guitar riff. Great song.

  • simma down now

  • What a talent,Karl where are you now lad?

  • Chris Sharrock has been in more bands than someone whose been in LOADS of bands...TOP drummer though.LOVE ya Chris. Best with the Iccies though Chris.

  • Sad song...the lyrics came true in the 90s. "The clocks will all run backwards" = the retro trend, "Sheep will have 2 heads" = Dolly the cloned sheep, "Thursday night blah blah Tuesday night instead" = my band being forced to play the cheap nights of the week and we covered this song. Oh the irony.

  • Speed up the tempo, change the arrangement and you've got the Stones "Sympathy for the Devil" - even the wooo, woooos at the end! Seriously - give it a listen. Very similar.

  • A way way underapreciated band in the uk an fu*kin consistently brilliant too

  • I've been trying to find out what his song was for about 20 odd years now!!!

    Bloody hellfire its good

  • the song is as good as the tambourine is hot ;0)

  • great party tune!!!!

  • This song has always haunted me with it's wonderfully disturbing lyrics. I go numb when I consider all the implications....

  • plans for 2010/11....touring UK at all.....please!

  • song of the day!!!

now this is a cool song but hell is not the promised land and i don't feel way down now.

  • So anyone know how Karl is doing and where he is?

  • great song. little 'sympathy for the devil' backing vocals thrown in the mix

  • Thursday night and Friday will be on Tuesday night instead... Priceless... I've been out too many times doing Friday on a Tuesday night ; )

  • great song -- best line "...fought for ten decades -- for the gods they made"

  • still one of my favorite alltime songs....thanks world party and hfs

  • I wanna meet the tambourine player.

  • @markuseb Well, she's probably ~45 now....

  • @markuseb No you don't. I met her once, I woke up by the road with all my clothes cut off :P

  • @DWSimmy Oh if that's the case then I DEFINITELY wanna meet her!

  • @markuseb Shes probably nearly fifty now. Still want to meet her?

  • @markuseb she's pretty old now...

  • God I did alot of coke when this song was popular..gritting my teeth now (pavlovian response).

  • love it!

  • Karl is god.

  • jimi hendrix did that

  • I recently came across my Goodbye Jumbo tape from the 90s! It has been in a box with some stuff from my college days--memories-- So I've been on here listening to World Party again. Love Street and Ain't Gonna Come Till I'm Ready are really special to me and always will be. This is beautifully timeless music. I love them. Thanks World Party!

  • I remember seeing this band on SNL and I noticed something odd: The lead singer was playing left handed but he didn't reverse the strings. The small string was on top and the large string was on the bottom. It was like he just flipped the guitar over and went from there. Has anybody else ever seen anything like that?

  • yeah - Paul McCartney ;)

  • I commented on that on another post. Your 100% right. How many people do that! Even Jimi Hendrix didn't do that. Rare indeed. When everything is said & done, I have to say 'Way Down' is my fav., although there are many more.

  • Another cat that plays that way is Babyface.

  • @spiff2268

Search up a band called the Eric Gales band where they not only have the guitarist play that way but their bass player as well.

And then there's the mighty Albert King.

  • echt een toffe video ik ben er dol op!!!!!!

  • 90`s,hit in 1990

  • ja echt super

  • one of the strongest pop songs of the 80's IMO....thx4postage....4 piesOOOO

  • thanx..............many memories xx

  • the clocks will all run backwards all the sheep will have 2 heads...

Thursday night and Friday will be on Tuesday night instead I've always loved that lyric....

  • Actually The whole sheet is very well written...

  • Woman with tambourine - always puts a downer on things.

  • Whyzat?

  • Sometimes you gotta get way down nah... but then you get really way up nah...

You guys can quote me on that too...

  • I loved this song back in the day! Still do. When I was a teenager, most girls fancied New Kids On the Block. I, on the other hand fancied Karl Wallinger! :-)

  • Karl, if you're reading this...

I sincerely think this is one of the greatest songs of the 1990's.

    Dave

  • Sort of looks like They Might Be Giants meets The Cure.

    Great song.

  • The opening riffs of this song hooked me from the start. WP, great band. Many good songs.

  • i love the bass lines and the lyrics

  • They did this on SNL and it killed - I was amazed at the time, as a high schooler, that there was a guy playing bass like McCartney. So cool.

  • all the members are faux members. karl wallinger (the singer) plays all of the instruments on the records & the rest are session/ touring musicians. he was also an environmentalist before it was cool.

  • not necessarily true...the piano player is Guy Chambers who in fact was in WP and went on to become Robbie Robertson's hit songwriter/collaborator.... I saw WP lots live back in the day, great band, talented as hell they all were...esp Karl...good times!

  • Think you mean Robbie Williams.

  • Yes, I do/did!! Ooops.... As much as I admire Guy's (quite lucrative) work with RW, I miss the old World Party... what a great band they were to see, such good songcrafting and musicianship. Karl was one of those fleeting geniuses.... the Waterboys too were at their best with him in the band. Oh sigh....

  • Karl's genius is still active... at least it was quite recently, when he collaborated with Peter Gabriel on Big Blue Ball.

  • Awesome!

  • Is that the trash compactor room from Star Wars? Just kidding...Great song.

  • "anything...but this." GREAT lyric.

  • LOL, the blonde is way too distracting. I'd be pissed off, to be honest if my record label thought my band and tunes, needed a sexy faux band member. Song is great.

  • The shaggable blonde was Patsy, his au-pair (or so Karl claimed). She was also involved in the tour for the album. It was more to do with Karl having a laugh by sticking in some dolly bird in kinky boots into the act after he'd just got into trouble over some TV remark he'd made about Flake bars that Cadbury's had taken exception to. Karl's a loony of the old school (as Geldof and The Blockheads will testify) - pity Mike Scott took himself so seriously he could never get the joke...

  • @markboylepotb Hehe. Dolly bird - now there's a phrase you don't hear enough these days :-)

  • brilliant indeed, high school was the time when this was new. *sigh*

  • Love this song, it's ironic though because "Inside my future I, what I see just makes me cry, I'm way down now" Not too far after that he had a problem with his brain or something to that effect.

  • i watch 120 minutes on VH1 classic and they show a different video for this song. does anybody know that video? Its like in a theatre in front of a crowd, but I don't think its live

  • cont...Your companion on this journey of the mind is the greenish-yellow glow of a stereo tuner and the familiar, comforting tones of this song, just loud enough for you to hear and just quiet enough for you to fall asleep without having to get out of bed to turn it off.

  • like your style! Check out my songs, especially "Indian Summer" - very much influenced by World Party. I'm a recording artist/songwriter. Go to my profile, here, scroll down to the url to take you to my space band page.

    enjoy!- B

  • It's an early Spring morning, the cheap sliding glass windows of your dorm room are open just enough to smell the sweetness of the coming Summer, with all its promises of romance, swimming and spontaneous Ice cream cones consumed at roadside shops with huge, plastic cows or soft serve swirls, beckoning your warm tongue to lick their seductive frozen delights.

  • I remember when this song came out, I had totally screwed up pretty much everything good in my life. I listened to these guys so much (on cassette !) and it's funny, I come back to this song now and I love it, you'd think it would be a reminder of bad stuff but it isn't, it's a hopeful song. It's one of those songs I can listen to 100 times and not be tired of hearing. Oh, and things got better, eventually. So it all works out, that which doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

  • Couldn't have said it better! This song makes me feel awesome!!!

  • brilliant. love this song.

  • Thursday night and Friday will be on Tueday night instead...

  • truly a fantastic song!

  • "She took us by the hand, hell was the promise land"...It's funny these lyrics felt so personal in high school and now in my mid thirties I find myself in a situation where these lyrics are once again meaningful. Sorry If I am rambling ... GREAT SONG

    Pavel Penguin

  • That guitar hook!

  • Im young again

  • omg I remembered I forgot HOW MUCH I FOOKIN USE TO LOVED THIS SONG!!!!!!

  • love it

  • greatt song if you like great music please write .

  • i forgot that i loved this song...was on one of my mixed tapes that i lost...

is it new or interrelated? (i work in insurance, claims)...i think it's both, but in the end, we're all new and interrelated...

some people enjoy a favorite song, some like to play Stomp The Hell Out of Other Peoples Fun...The Cynical Diaries...Smug and Joyless...oh well...

  • Play a game of Spot the Pop Culture References. I see Lou Reed's "Perfect Day," The Stooges "TV Eye," the "hoo hoo" chorus from the Stones "Sympathy for the Devil," and the Beatle's Hoffner bass. Can anyone find anything else?

  • Heather Mills on tambourine?

  • Man, I absolutely love this song!! Karl, cannot wait to hear some new music from you...get well, soon!!!

  • i am so sorry i did not know he was sick.. Karl you will be in my thoughts every day because you have made me so happy thru your music.please please get well!!!!

  • He's fine now thanks for asking!

  • Glad to hear he is ok...Glad to hear of a new cd as well....In my humble but usually correct opinion :), "Goodbye Jumbo" is one of the best albums ever...Thanks for answering me back!...Godspeed.......

  • You can't crank this one too loud. Freakin brilliance.

  • Im fine now thanks!

    New Cd on its way!

  • Yes he was really bad. Go to his web site there is a little on there.

    Paul

  • Karl had a life threatening problem with his brain. He had half his taken away. He has now regained his legs and voice and has started to tour again. hopefully something new will come out. Good luck to him. Their lp's are so good.

  • Are you serious? Is he ok? One of the most brilliant men/bands ever...

  • He's FINE NOW !!!

    Thanks for asking ..

He is in the studio recording a new CD and will hopefully be out on tour later this year.

    Thank for asking!

    World Party xx

  • What happened to this band they had promise

  • Damn catchy.

  • THE best album of 1990 period

  • thanks for the 80's flashback ;)

  • u mean 90,s flashback

  • Yeah. This was a modern rock #1 in 1990. I actually have a radio show and I play nothing but 90's alt and I play this song quite a bit! 90's all the way!

  • Uh...dumbass, maybe it could have been because Jellyfish ceased to be a band not long after. Great musicianship, harmonizing, and songwriting, how can you say they were overrated?

  • Because they were, I almost thought you had to be high to listen to them.

  • I saw World Party at Center Stage in Atlanta in the fall of '90, and Jellyfish opened. An absolutely incredible show!!! Two very unappreciated bands. Wallinger is truly a massively talented visionary, way ahead of his time.

  • I'll agree with you about World Party but I though Jellyfish was one of the most overrated bands...Maybe because after the high wore off, we didn't listen anymore.

  • I have always loved this band!

  • Heard this song at an Eat n Park restaurant one night in 2005 and I got totally hooked into the song!

  • Ann Coulter is much better looking. I'm not buying the Mick Jagger thing. Karl can sing! He's also a better writer than John Lennon to which he has been compared. Why try to define him? Just enjoy. He's just good!

  • ann coulter better looking?? lmaoooo gross, man. not even. anyway awesome song, been a fan for years.

  • Karl Wallinger but John Lennon taught the faceless get that's come on my screen what he knows....

  • There's breeding in the sewers and the rats are on their way clouding up the images of my perfect day ...and I know I'm not alone. Truer words have never been sung before. Thanks for posting

  • Great song from the fall of 1990! Was a sophmore at the County College of Morris at that time. This song bring me back to all those fine memories! Grunge sounded the death nell for modern music. The great era of music before the era of grunge!

  • this song will NEVER die.......timeless

  • Awesome one of my favorite songs of all time and I know a million songs. One of the greatest bands that no one ever heard of. Saw them in Saratoga Springs NY about 8 years ago. Still think Wallinger sounds like Mick Jagger and has a million times talent!

  • Gawd I love this timeless, fabulous, toe-tapping tune. World Party, you are one hell of a bad.

  • Why is Ann Coulter playing tambourine with World Party in this video?

  • Anything but this

  • YEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAH. I'm Way Doen Now1

  • yeah show me something true today

  • Awesome song! This should have been a monster crossover hit, and World Party should have been much, much bigger! Thanks for posting this!

  • Karl Wallinger is great! More World Party.
