800 billion barrels of recoverable high-quality shale oil are available in the US Rockies. At $90/barrel thats $72 trillion. Thermally conductive in-situ extraction can be used in lieu of mining. Even CO2 injection can be used to help recover the oil, which makes it environmentally preferable to buying the same oil from countries that flare off gas. Overall: less pollution, less transportation, less CO2, better life for Americans.

Catch being.
Energy Security played too much leads towards merely turning Coal into a liquid fuel. Thus producing double the pollution as Oil.
What we really need is fuels that aren't just availible, but are also Sustainable.
We need more than just Energy Security.
We need Carbon Security, Clean Air Security, Water Security, Food Security, and Geopolitical Security.
Agrofuels, Nukes, and Coal aren't going to achieve that.
