When banks/credit card lenders can arbitrarily jack up interest rates or like Bank of Americas new $9.00 checking account maintenance fee (unless you have over 50K in your account), HMO's skyrocketing increases (with record profits) people are getting screwed every day. We need representatives like Grayson to keep that kind of greed in check. It would be interesting to see a how much each representative gets in contributions from corporate/special interest/lobbyist.
As a mortgage broker, a "friend" wanted to buy a home. Her credit was tough, but she had some savings for a big enough down payment to help make it work. It wasn't intended, but I booked for the file for a zero gain......the first file ever done for free. She was a friend so it was ok. On a 2-yr ARM, she was supposed to CLEAN-UP her credit within the 2-yrs to qualify for the low-ball 30-yr fxd rate mortgage. She starte suckin' crystal meth, screwed her credit, blamed me! Sure, that works!
Isn't the board game Monopoly supposed to be a good illustration of how capitalism is supposed to work? And doesn't game end with one person getting all the money and the others going broke? Think about it, at the beginning everyone has the same, with the same chances. But in the end it's one guy who gets it all, sooner or later. Having capitalism 'with ethic and morality' is a laugh because it's not designed to work that way. That's why we need to put back regulation Reagan and others threw out
Regulation would not be needed if the banks and corporations exercise capitalism with ethics and moral standards. In other words. Make a profit, but quit ripping off people. Then the Government won't have to intervene.
The people going "broke" or bankrupt as a result of entering into a legally binding contract have no one to blame but themselves. A law isn't going to fix stupidity and ignorance, nor is a directive mandating studies, reviews, audits, etc.
The problem is one of consumer ignorance and/or materialistic greed. I think time, money and resources can and should be spent pursuing more productive endeavors.
Agreed. Maybe if he proposed increased economic education for people getting into investing, I'd support it, but this is like banning hammers because sometimes people drop them on their toes.
im with you. people are whiners when they are stupid enough to enter into a social contract and if it goes wrong then they want some kind of reward? haha
if you ever listened to ron paul speak about immigration, about gay marriage, about anything, you would know that Ron Paul (PLUS looking at his 30+yr voting record) would never approve any racial discrimination.
And yet he did EXACTLY that! Or at least for some ELEVEN YEARS his newsletter with HIS name on it continually made race-baiting statements and outright racist statements. That doesn't necessarily mean he himself is a "racist", but perhaps it is even worse than that to exploit the racist views of his constituents to further his own ends. I certainly think it is worse.
There are numerous former campaign insiders who have stated that Lew Rockwell actually wrote these articles as part of an overall strategy that he and Paul cooked-up to take advantage of the rampant racism present in Texas at that time (and this time as well I suspect).
All Paul says in his defense is that he doesn't know who wrote the articles in question and wasn't even aware they were in the newsletter... FOR ELEVEN YEARS... which is preposterous in the extreme!

obviously you are not at a level of success in your life where you have had other people do things on your behalf and have them make a statement or take action that doesnt fit your ideals.
@landsolo My comment about "verbatim" was referring to your standard Paultard opening statement which is always: "You're obviously to stupid to understand" or "Try doing some research" or some other insult or negatively provocative remark --- right out of the manual... apparently!
whether or not i believe he knew what was in the newsletters or not is one issue, and to me is borderline irrelevant. he has stood up time and time again against the bullshit in american politics and was one of the few questioning the FED before any of this mess started and asking why in the world we continue to support the co opted nazi regime perpetrated by isreal against palistine.
Well, it's certainly not borderline irrelevant to me, but I will admit you have a good point as regards Israel's continued openly-criminal behavior.
Paul still stands against any and all government services including public education and Universal Health Care (both deal breakers for me).
The United States has to quit behaving like some crazy Hollywood caricature of a bunch of self-righteous Texas Rangers if we have any hope of surviving as a progressive democracy or even a civilized society.
Not all government agencies are the federal reserve, and this government agency isn't unconstitutional (neither is the Fed). You may as well have said "how can he promote constitutional devotion and still wear a tie," they have nothing to do with one another.
actually, the federal reserve IS unconstitutional. Article 1 Section 8 "The Congress shall have Power To...To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures;" not a central bank. Maybe you need to look into why The First & Second Banks of the United States were unconstitutional as well.
Wait a minute, you claim that it is unconstitutional, and then back it up with a quote from the constitution specifically allowing it? Wow, I don't even have to argue! Thanks for doing my half for me, I had a headache.
dude, you need to pay attention, CONGRESS has the power to COIN money. (A1S8) NOT A CENTRAL BANK, NOT THE FEDERAL RESERVE (a private bank)
as i said, Compare the FED to the 1st and 2nd banks of the US. Both dismantled. My argument, which i think you missed with my first comment to this video, is that the constitution does not allow for the printing and debasing of currency, in our case the dollar. Remember that once upon a time we could go to the bank and exchange dollars for gold. not anymore
The Fed is the instrument by which the Congress coins money. Or did you think that the Congress is supposed to do it with their own hands?
Moving on, no, you were never able to go to the bank and exchange dollars for gold. When we had the gold standard, it was all sealed up in Ft Knox, where it remains today. If you wanted gold, you did the same thing you do today: you bought it.
can you answer when the FED was created without looking it on wiki/google?
if you can, can you tell me how in the world the US printed it's money before the Federal reserve act was passed?
And, perhaps you were not able to go to your local credit union and they would give you your share of gold... youre right. The gold isnt even in Ft Knox, Do you know ANYTHING about the FED?
this is a fucking stupid idea , it's not the job of the goverment to bial everyone out who gets into trouble , this country would go broke trying to do that , you just can't keep taking from one group to give to another group it just does not work
i agree with you bud, this pretty stupid. It is actually the completely socialization of all debt. pure socialism at its best. Keynes would be in love writing books more eloquent than Shakespeare's. ridiculous. Keynes was wrong, obviously, and there is no point in trying to bail out the very people that will become addicted to the easy money, just like the corporations are. Transparency is the main problem, promote HR1207.
people need to take responsibility for their own damn choices.
I have only one problem with Grayson being in the House of Reps , .... I think he should be in the Senate so he and Al Franken could show the Senate what a BACKBONE looks like
I liked Alan Grayson because he seemed like a constitutionalist but where does he claim the authority for this bill? Where is even the authority for the CFPA?
As far as I'm concerned there is none, nor is there any authority for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac who played a huge part in the collapse.
There is a Constitution Party. The media doesn't cover but 2 parties, but there were at least 6 different parties running for POTUS. Look it up. I was surprised when I found out.
Thanks, everybody I know who calls themselves a constitutionalist is actually a Republican, a Democrat or a Randian so I didn't think the party existed. Good to learn there's an actual party called that though!
Trust me, the Constitutionalists are lunatics too, just like the Libertarians (who are really Republicans who don't want to associate with their party, because they are worse than Republicans). Those that I've seen who say they're a Constitutionalist are are either a member of that party or a Republican or a Libertarian, never Democrats, and we actually honor the Constitution more than ANY Republican breathing today. Republicans actually try to misinterpret the Constitution to suit their needs.

you poor misguided soul. You may be good at some things, but at law and the constitution... i must say, you are very average. I guess you're not alone, a good number of the populace believe that health care, housing, job placement, and food are RIGHTS, as if it was God's wish. Have you ever read the constitution? I have, and nowhere does it say theft is constitutionally allowed. This is theft Soldierette, when you take from one against his will to "help" others. Teach a man to Fish, not steal.
@Soldierette If you invested some time you'd find that Ron Paul who has been the leading member of the republican/libertarian caucus has voted side by side with the most progressive member that is Dennis Kucinich. They've both made statements to say that they'd run on similar values while they agree that they have difference of opinion that they would like to use that difference of opinion to find the proper medium. Paul wants the government to work within its means starting with the military.
I agree. Paul, Kucinich, and Greyson are 3 representatives in DC who actually represent THE PEOPLE instead of corporate interests. The lobbyists don't even bother sitting outside Paul's office. It should speak volumes to the people that representatives like Ron Paul are the rare exception.
I disagree with Grayson and Kucinich on a few things, such as social issues, but for the most part I am a big fan of both, and I'm a libertarian.
@milkman52879 Paul, Kucinich, Grayson, and Weiner are the only legislators that aren't bought out. I present as evidence of corporate take over of american politics that corporate america spent millions upon millions taking Grayson out in this last election alone. He was the most avid foe of corruption we've seen.
@Soldierette And Congressman Grayson is the man that added the amendment to Congressman Ron Paul's bill H.R. 1207 to audit The Fed. They watered down the bill and Congressman Grayson added an amendment to put the power of the GAO audit back into the bill. He and Dr. Ron Paul work together on many of these issues. The media is playing the politic game with the interviews done by Rand Paul and passing Rand Paul's views onto anyone they can just like Palin is overly attached to Rand Paul.
This is a good idea however I see the logistics being difficult to iron out. SO what if 35% of people who buy a financial product go bankrupt they ax it or maybe 50%?
I hope the media also pays attention to Grayson's calling out of the Federal Reserve, which is a far more dangeous threat to Americans than loony republicans in the house and senate.
Let's drag some of these god damned Republican politicians out of their god damned offices and give them fair trials right there in the god damned streets!
I dislike this kind of thing. It's too broad, anything from casinos to any company that sells expensive cars, jewelry etc could financially ruin someone.
You're too much of a pessimist. Yes there are corporatist Democrats just as there are corporatist Republicans, but ALL Democrats & Republicans aren't evil. Obama is a good guy, and he means well, but he's a little too weak. Although he wants to get rid of many of Bush's policies (and I believe he will, and already has removed some), it's not easy overcoming the huge bureaucracy that has been existence for a while. Have a little faith. Guantanamo will be closed and a Public Option is coming.
Lets see, the government encouraged banks to give loans to people who could not afford them. As they are doing now with FHA loan rates at 3% with no down payment! The treasury secretary warned congress in 2001 that Fanniemae was in bad shape and Barney Frank assured us that everything was just fine....
Why didn't the republicans do anything about Fannie Mae when they had controll of congress during the Bush years? Doesn't House rules grant committee controll to the majority party?
They tried to regulate both Fannie May and Freddie Mac but they did not have a filibuster proof majority and barney frank and chris dodd and chuck block any regulation stating that both were in great shape. Six months before we had to bail them out Barney was stating that Fannie Mae was in great shape. The hearings are available on Youtube.
democrats fillibustered rarely under republican majority. I read the senate votes. I have some saved on my computer for reference. The best fillibuster they ever made was to stop the inheritance tax from being repealed since it only effects the super rich. I also remember the fail against Alito.
I hate to say it but what did the democrats really do when they were in control during the Bush years? I remember them caving in quite a bit. The republicans were worse, but at least there are some democrats with balls now.
Tylonous ..."what did the democrats really do when they were in control during the Bush years?"...
With one (1) single majority vote the Democrats were repeatedly blocked by the Republicans or vetoed by Bush on almost every bills they tried in vain to pass.
The Republican Party was the cause why nothing got done. They haven't changed since by saying "NO" on every Democratic bills.
Tyronous ... The Republicans control Congress for 12 yrs and did everything in their power to help the rich and the Big Corporations ... but did absolutely nothing ... NOTHING ... to help the Middle Class.
Since 2009 with a majority Congress the Democrats have done a lot to help the Middle Class.
What did the dems do on the Iraq war spending during the Bush years? They were elected to cut funding, did they?
Look at them now, scared to death to pass this health care bill because they know it's going to be a huge disaster. That is excactly why they want it to be bipartisan. So the blame will be shared and they wont lose votes.
Republicans and Democrats have failed us. This two party system has got to go.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Cool, let's grow government some more...
Maybe we should just pull the government almost completely out of the market (leaving some in to protect against harmful substances like pollutants) and see what happens, maybe we wouldn't have been in this mess to begin with...thanks CRA, Jimmy Carter & Bill Clinton...
I put blame where it went...I didn't credit Obama with being a lawyer that tried to play the race card by suing banks for withholding loans to people that didn't qualify. If we would have just let the banks do their business there wouldn't have been a whole bunch of bad loans to cause this mess...I've learned where the blame goes, so I can exempt those who it doesn't go to. Bush tried to curb the mess before it started, a handful of republicans helped to block those efforts because of lobbists
The tea party illiterates voted this guy out! Morons.

Who the fuck does this wackjob think he is having the federal state dictating to the general public what investments they can and cannot make?

I hope the media also pays attention to Grayson's calling out of the Federal Reserve, which is a far more dangeous threat to Americans than loony republicans in the house and senate.

I dislike this kind of thing. It's too broad, anything from casinos to any company that sells expensive cars, jewelry etc could financially ruin someone.

Read the info on the side, it is the Consumer Financial Protection Agency. It only covers financial products and services.

Its an amendment being introduced, its no where near finalization where the details are put in...nothing would be amended in its current form.
Its just an outline he is giving here...

he should run independent in 2012...
Obama is continuing Bush's policies. No change, same shit.
People have to realize that RepuGnicans and DemonCraps are the same shit... This two party dictatorship has to end.

The treasury secretary warned congress in 2001 that Fanniemae was in bad shape and Barney Frank assured us that everything was just fine....
commonsense010000 2 years ago
Why didn't the republicans do anything about Fannie Mae when they had controll of congress during the Bush years? Doesn't House rules grant committee controll to the majority party?
captcrais101 2 years ago
They tried to regulate both Fannie May and Freddie Mac but they did not have a filibuster proof majority and barney frank and chris dodd and chuck block any regulation stating that both were in great shape. Six months before we had to bail them out Barney was stating that Fannie Mae was in great shape. The hearings are available on Youtube.

democrats fillibustered rarely under republican majority. I read the senate votes. I have some saved on my computer for reference. The best fillibuster they ever made was to stop the inheritance tax from being repealed since it only effects the super rich. I also remember the fail against Alito.
captcrais101 2 years ago
I hate to say it but what did the democrats really do when they were in control during the Bush years? I remember them caving in quite a bit. The republicans were worse, but at least there are some democrats with balls now.
Tylonous 2 years ago 4
Tylonous ..."what did the democrats really do when they were in control during the Bush years?"...
With one (1) single majority vote the Democrats were repeatedly blocked by the Republicans or vetoed by Bush on almost every bills they tried in vain to pass.
The Republican Party was the cause why nothing got done. They haven't changed since by saying "NO" on every Democratic bills.
Republicans:
Party of "NO"
Party of "NObody"
Party "NO" more

Tyronous ... The Republicans control Congress for 12 yrs and did everything in their power to help the rich and the Big Corporations ... but did absolutely nothing ... NOTHING ... to help the Middle Class.
Since 2009 with a majority Congress the Democrats have done a lot to help the Middle Class.
librophile 2 years ago
I agree with you but they still didn't have any balls until reps like Grayson were elected.

Don't be arrogant; it won't be over until the Republican is completely wiped out of existence.

Cool, let's grow government some more...
Maybe we should just pull the government almost completely out of the market (leaving some in to protect against harmful substances like pollutants) and see what happens, maybe we wouldn't have been in this mess to begin with...thanks CRA, Jimmy Carter & Bill Clinton...
colossus48 2 years ago
You're a partisan idiot. Funny how you put no blame on Reagan or either Bush (especially Dubya, which was the worst).
DiverseLA 2 years ago 3
I put blame where it went...I didn't credit Obama with being a lawyer that tried to play the race card by suing banks for withholding loans to people that didn't qualify. If we would have just let the banks do their business there wouldn't have been a whole bunch of bad loans to cause this mess...I've learned where the blame goes, so I can exempt those who it doesn't go to. Bush tried to curb the mess before it started, a handful of republicans helped to block those efforts because of lobbists
