  • yea where's the rest? major scale bro, dont go soft on us.

  • whers the rest of the?

why didnt you play the whole song? it isnt that difficult.

but you played it very well

  • Hello.... Are you using flatwound strings?

  • What kinda bass and pickup are you using ?

  • @Deftcharge

it was a squier vintage mofified with seymour duncan pickups

  • nice line but there is intonation problems with your bass. Maybe use an electronic tuner before begining.

  • They say that the guys didn't found James the day they've recorded the song, so when they finally found him, it was nearly 3h in the morning and he was so drunk, he couldn't stand on a chair so he played on the floor with a guy holding the chart on top of his head !!!

  • EXCELLENT, except you made the same mistake I made at 0:20. Tha really "quick" pick up note right before it goes back to the E, (2nd fret D string) is not an F# like you played (and me until today actually). Listen very carefully and play along. It is actually a G# plucked quickly on the 1st fret G string. I listened over and over while I played and something did not sound right until I hit that note. If you dispute it YouTube What's Going On bass isolated. Hear The Man himself.

  • yes too sex music

  • L 2 tune plox

  • Comment removed

  • You are actually good.

  • Spot on, really well played.

  • congrats on the perfect pitch jib! just kidding faggot, his tuning was fine it sounded good

  • finally, someone who is NOT WAISTING OUR TIME and knows what this little device making tic-ti-tic (a metronome) is for...practicing, being on time and make you groove...

    Thanks man...

  • Is that the squier vintage modified bass? or is that the one it is modeled after?

  • ya its the squier

  • Best Bass players ever..Jamerson, Carol Kaye, Chuck Rainey

  • Hashwizard,

Your list is good, but Anthony Jackson, Francis Rocco Prestia and a so called John Francis Pastorius should be mentioned. Just for the record.

  • Thank you! That's what groove is all about.

I also looked at that book, but i am missing the cds.

    Like your bass too

  • Excellent Bass Playing

  • Play that funky music... That was superb!! I love the Bass!

  • yeah yeah yeah, agreed! loved ya perform

  • pretty dope

  • not bad.. not bad..

  • Great playing and nice looking bass.

  • Great! Very fluid and easy, but precise.

Is that a Squier 70´s Jazz you play there?

  • thanx!!

    It's a squier vintage mofidied

  • In what way have you modified it ?

Hawe you changed the pickups ?

Also are you using flats (strings) ?

  • lovely playing but where's the passion? - You can train a synth to play all the right notes but.......

  • better not showing passion and play good (like this guy, great job btw) then show the passion and play like crap

  • James Jamerson never showed any emotion playing live, even when he was drunk (which was most of the time).

  • is this comment any related to mine?

i said that "better not showing passion and play good (like this guy, great job btw) then show the passion and play like crap"

because there were comments saying he didn't show passion.

  • Yes, it was. You and I both know James Jamerson was the most influencial electric bass player of his time (along with Jaco Pastorius, who was quoted several times as saying Jamerson was his idol). What I meant was that Jamerson (when he played live) showed very little emotion. That wasn't a knock on him as a person(or a musician)nor was it good thing or a bad thing- Its just the way he was. Sadly, he had a serious alcohol abuse problem which would lead to his premature death in 1983.

  • Again, What I originally posted wasn't meant to be a put down to James Jamerson nor was it meant as an attack at you. I was simply making a point.

  • i understand, but the point of discussion in the first place was that people were saying this guy on the video didn't show his passion, i didn't say a word about jamerson. but now i think about it, it is a good thing he didn't show emotion; jamerson did nether;)

  • Nice job. Every bass player should study that tune! His bass lines were so alive and buoyant.

  • that was very sweet.I am learning to play the bass and your videos have been much helpful... greetings from Mexico

  • Do you have the Standing In The Shadows of Motown book or did you learn this by ear?

  • NICE job. Saw you sneek your second finger in there a couple times. Jamerson always only used 1. Is that true?

  • yes It's true but I do on my way

  • hey is that bass a squier?great bass for the price!!

  • Yes it is!!

  • The only time James wasn't able to feed his family was after he left Motown by the mid-late seventies, after leaving L.A. when he went into seclusion. This track was recorded with James laying down on Hitsville' studio floor. He wasn't feeling the best and had had a little too much to drink the night before. Odd how things turn out...

  • Who cares if its not hard, its the way james wrote it, how melodic all the fills are! and how melodic the bass part is. its not like when you hear in a primus or chilis song your like WOW THAT FILL WAS CRAZY, its like when you hear the fills in this song your like "wow that was really nice".

  • Cool bro...

  • Smooth

  • I think it's amazing that James Jamerson only played with his index finger.

  • lol he recorded this song laying down and drunk on a table in the studio

  • on the floor.

  • Primus man sounded pretty jealous.

  • thats easier to play than you think.

  • Jamerson's stuff is such a great source for study. I see far too many guys trying to get into bass playing by trying all sorts of crazy riffs and slap lines and they end up with terrible timing and no imagination or soul at all.

  • very nice. The micro sux

  • Can you please post the next 16 bars please? Really enjoyed a proper transcription of this song.

  • My God, you are talented!

  • let me guess, primus fan? get off les's jock. he don't know you.

    anyway, this guys pretty good.

  • nice one mister common sense professor

ill get off ya mom if ya ask nicely

  • that doesnt suprise me at all, why wouldnt you be able too? a fag should know these things you know

    :o)

  • its not that hard to be an idiot on youtube. try being one in real life. It takes courage and unfortunately its hard to judge which category you fall into. Maybe you should post a video of you being an idiot in an unstaged real life circumstance and prove you really are what you make yourself out to be.

  • i hope that wasnt directed at me ??

  • that 'standing in the shadows of motown' book is just awesome and amazingly helpful. jamerson truly was a great

  • nice bass man. tell me more about it. i was plannin on getting one.

  • Very nice.

  • nice man, you connected well at the end

  • Good job!

  • Nice! that's about as far as I got into this line :P

You aren't as far as Jamerson into the pocket, but who is?

  • Nice but that Not the bassline from the first part of

    what's going on

    But nice

  • Sure it's the first part of this tune!!

Refer to the book "standing in the shadows of motown", the tune is played by Jamerson's son!!

  • yeh it is the first part of the song.. but isnt this jamerson jr.s interpretation of the feel for the bassline on this song and not his fathers. which he could never replicate

  • Thats a Squire!!? wow, they've upped their game no?

I was about to comment that I have a Fender Jazz 75 (re-issue) too. With the rosewood fretboard and pearl inlays/sunburst body and the chrome pickup and bridge covers. I love it.

Very nice tone for a squire.

    Nice playing too : )

  • I have a Squire Vintage Modified Jazz Fretless and I'll tell you, you would swear it was a real Jazz if you didn't see the name on it. Great playability and sound.

  • I have one too!!!

I'm from portugal and it seems that i'm the only one with a Fretless mod Jbass here!!!

It only cost me 300€, a bargain and it has amazing sound, looks and playability!!!

    Totaly recomend it!

  • Very, very nice.

  • Hey just like the master. It's great to see and hear it. Thanks!

  • nice jam man

  • what kind of bass is that i know its a fender jazz but what year

  • It's not a fender but a Squier Vintage Modified from 2006!!

  • I knew that was that new Squire.

Squire's been picking it up lately with the vintage modified series.

Why didn't they have those when I first started playing???

  • 79, is right about the muted ghost notes, same as in drumming, its not allways what you play but what you hear in your head before you play you it. thanks for the posting Bro.

  • yep those are the notes. You just need to add a bit of soul and play with one finger..

My best suggestion is to get used to dragging your finger across multiple strings, so you can get the muted ghost notes that are a big part of Jamersons playing.

  • what kind of bass is that?

  • It's a squier vintage modified

  • i have that bass!! beautiful and sounds great doesn't it?

  • Elle a l'air bien ta basse ! Tu me la vends ?

  • Tune yer bass!

  • Cool Playing Man. Jamerson Is The Greatest.

  • great song. great album. great bassist. thank you

  • Forget about trying to "get the exact tone" The fact that he's playing the tune is an honor to Jamerson. This guy's playing Style is smooth! You Rock!

  • good job. man. where did u get the tab from?

  • from the book "standing in the shadows of motown"

  • Did anyone here know this is the bassline to Marvin Gaye's 1971 hit "What's Going On"?

  • awesome take on one of the most classic bass lines of all time, sir! you definitely got the groove down. =)

now Bazerk0013, if he wanted to get the EXACT same tone that Jamerson got on the tune, LeSebu would be drunk as hell, and laying on the Snake Pit's floor (just like Jamerson was when he recorded the line!). =)

    Again Lesebu: AWESOME vid! =)

  • great job but get exact tone just use index

  • yeah I know but I don't want to imitate, playing that tune is enough for me.

  • Nice one

  • Peace and Blessings.

  • Wow man, great tone! Awesome playing! It's all good! 5 Stars

  • rock that bass!!!
