I miss this duo. I forgot how much I liked hearing Nicky Grist read out the pace notes and to watch Colin guide their car to the finish. Loeb is a great driver and I like watching how smooth he is but Colin took more risk and was over-all a more exciting driver to watch.... you just never knew the outcome with him. Legend is a term not used lightly when in the same sentence as the name Colin McRae.
Villagra...!!!??? I believe F. Villagra is a good driver, but you can not compare with Colin... They are in different levels. You have one World Rally Champion, more than 20 World Rally victories, and the other...?
Also, there must have been some faster stages in the loop which justified that, but the gearbox has far too long ratios for this stage: Colin rarely gets beyond the fourth and it's almost painful to see how unwieldy and languid the car is on the 3rd or even the 2nd. And it doesn't look as if the surface were particularly slippy.
Anyway, the WRCs of that era are nice to watch: much stifferent and perter than the modern ones. Less tractiction, I know, but more fun.
I loved Colin's driving style -- it was splendid how he tended to use the whole width of the road whenever he could, and how how he played with the momentum and with the angle of the car. This onboard doesn't show it to the utmost -- I think the balance of the Xsara didn't suit Colin's driving too well: the car has this tendency to understeer and has a "sticky" front end.
how did he die?
