i hate the way people think that the series was lost by this one mistake : what lost the series was the lions shitty performance in the first test, and the way they bottled an 11 point lead in the second test, o'gara's mistake was just the icing on the cake.
This still haunts me. What on earth was he thinking of ? Too many Irish rugby supporters (mainly Cork based Munster supporters) continually argue he is a world class rugby legend. He certainly does not look like one here. A draw was a good result and allowed the Lions to fight for the series in the 3rd test. All he had to do was take a tackle, go to ground and form a ruck......ohhh dear dear ! What a total cock up !
i dont get it he tells tommy to run, then he kicks-tommy doesnt chase, instead he chases it himself-and why is it such a big deal.it was tied up with 30 seconds to go.please someone explain
@drico969 he didn't just lose the Lions the match, he lost them the series... and this is a tour that comes round once every four years, and once every twelve to each country. It's unlikely that any of those players will be around to play the Boks in 12 years' time, so O'Gara blew the only chance that this set of Lions had to beat the Boks. This is the biggest event in world rugby outside the RWC Finals... that's why it's a big deal.
Im Irish... Love O Gara hes saved our bacon more times than I can remember... but that was like a schoolboy mistake, might not have been thinking straight after the smash he got from Russouw i think it was, because he is usually tactically one of our best!
The best flyhalf of all time form the best Bok team of all time. Kicked a wet, leather rugby 58m for penalty in a driving rainstorm, and more than once. And had his fair share of tries too. Arrogant? Sorry, he's earned it, and in the days when rugby players all held down real jobs.
What an arrogant prick.... Sure, in hindsight ROG will wish he'd just booted it into touch, but he was trying to do something positive and win the game. Remember, the Lions still couldn't have won the series even if they had drawn that game
O'Gara was right to kick it - if he kicked it to touch, the Lions couldn't possibly win the tour. He did the corageous thing in looking for a win, but I don't know why the hell he didn't at least jump for the ball. I could have killed him when he just ran into the catcher like that. In his defence though, it should have been the player behind him that put in the chase. I don't know why he didn't - too tired after an epic game, perhaps? Great match, great series.
One of rugby's greats, doc Craven had this to say about Botha during his playing days
“Naas is a genius – a match winner. I’ve often said it and I’ll say it again: I cannot believe that a team with Naas Botha in its ranks could ever lose a match.
"He can win virtually on his own against any opposition. Naas has the presence of mind to know exactly what is happening, to sum up his opponents and instantly decide on the correct tactics. Give me Naas Botha any day and I’ll beat the world…”
@RamKat24 - Naas Botha's record against the All Blacks. Played four, lost three, won one. haha.... and before anyone says anything, 1986 wasn't an All Blacks team. In fact, they all got sacked when they got home and a completely different All Blacks still beat the French in a series.
@5009777 erm wales 2009?? erm munster 2 heineken cups.... miracle match v gloucester... was the right decision to put the ball up!! no professional plays for a draw or else they rnt a professional!! ur comment was slightly ridiculous!!
@ian12walsh only because he can kick. think about it. apart from his kicking game which is in all fairness brilliant, why else would you want O'Gara in your team? what other qualities does he posess?
Jaysis the one time he tackles this is what happens.
On a side not best tactical kicker of all time. And isnt just a goal kicker like many of the other Fly halfs in the World. Carter, O'Gara, Giteau - Fly halfs that will kick tactically and try to create moments of magic.
@GaryTss He looked punch drunk, before the tour I thought if the Lions played to their strengths...tactical and intelligent rugby with solid kicking they would have caused us serious problems like the last 20mins of the first 2 games, but instead they decided to try and bully us with what they thought was their version of HARD rugby, I'm sorry mate but you just dont come to SA on tour and think you will be more physical than the Boks, but like you say...dream street! c u in 12 years
@jackwrb i'm not disagreeing in the slightest that it was stupidity on the part of O'Gara, Botha just acts very ignorantly in the interview in my opinion
@GaryTss He had one of the best rugby brains of all time. He played rugby like a game of chess, always knew what the opposition would do before they do it. Always be in position when they make a move, what i didnt like about him is he couldnt tackle to save his life. He shorts were always white as snow while the others were dirty.
@GaryTss Ha!Smug wanker you say,you might be right there mate,i think he was just happy the Springboks won that game and with it the series but to his credit,he was crowned best South African rugby player of the year 5 times so i guess hes has earned the right to speak.
To be fair did anyone watch ireland vs south africa on the weekend? Sexton was playing 10 and tbh wasnt making a great deal of contribution to ireland..70th minute O'gara comes on and creates two tries, one of them being a crossfield kick with one of his first touches. I was never a fan of O'gara but that game showed me how much of a difference he can make.
jesus ....1 mistake ..he is human ...he is one of the best out halfs in the world ....yes he cant defend but the way he controls and dictats games is unbelivable ... when jonah lomu says he is one of the best who can argue..
@julianmartin10 Like I said, I'm biased. You could add Percy Montgomery, Morne Steyn and Felipe Contepomi to that list as well. Even I can recognise that BOD is a better player than ROG, and we've always known that he can be a liability in defence, but the other players can deal with that. I also think his tactical kicking is very good for backline play, but that's my opinion. I quite enjoy watching him play, especially now that Sexton is challenging him for the jersey.
Rog is one of the best fly-halves to ever play the game. I know I'm biased but I truly believe that. Yes he bottled against Northampton in '01, but he made up for it on countless occasions. And yes this mistake cost the Lions the series but lets be honest, had this match ended as a draw, the Boks would have sent out a full strength tem for the third test and destroyed the Lions, and I don't care how many times he gets knocked down or makes a mistake, I still think he's the greatest.
@IrelandRugby2010 Err...what? I can think of at least 4 different fly halves which were and still are so much more accomplished...Dan Carter, Neil Jenkins, Wilkinson, Grant Fox, should I go on? ROG's all round game is not that complete, yes he has a great boot for positional forwards play, but his running game is only above average and his ability to release the backline is poor. BOD had so much more potential internationally that we never saw because of ROG. And fuck he's boring to watch!!
@julianmartin10 no ..the ball rog gives his backline is emence ... and that bod potental stuff is a load of shit ..the only reaon bod was never at the top of his game for a long period is because of injury
if he kicked it straight out the game would have been a draw deeming the series unwinable for the lions, seeing as they lost the first test. what is botha on about?
@Myself0101 oh wait i just re read my comment.. anyway Scotland have a pretty good team now.. they were so close to winning the triple crown they practically had the beatings of wales, drew against england and beat us i think they were the best of the home nations.... both wales and Ireland have travel to murryfield next year, which does not look good for teams who would have fancied themselves there 12 months ago...
I don't recall Naas saying that he's a cunt. He just made a very bad tactical decision and executed it equally as bad, but that doesn't make him a cunt.

Naas you LEGEND! I wish RoG hadn't done that, would've made the Boks play in the last match. Oh well, I guess we'll take it though, #1 side in the world, won everything available, and done it in the face of an IRB desperate for someone (anyone) else to be on top. Thats how i rationalise the crazy citing decisions we've seen over the last 12 months. Wayne Barnes either hates SA, or was under orders from IRB to ref against them. What a dick.
