Get rid of the Zalman and get the xigmatek s1283, if you look at reviews, it get awesome performance, as good as $60+ coolers and costs only $34 on newegg.
I really doubt you need 500gb of storage, but whatever floats your boat.
Link to burner is dead, just make sure it has lightscribe.
G-Skill is actually pretty overpriced for what you get, you can find cheaper ram if you look.
For $1,500 you could throw the fastest Phenom in there with 2 4870's in Crossfire, which is what I would do. And yes, DO get VisionTek over the other brands, it is worth the extra $10-$15 because they're the only ones with a lifetime warranty.
I'd get the MSI board that has FOUR PCI-e 2.0 slots if I were you. Just in case later on you wanted to add even more cards to the Crossfire. I saw that board on Tiger Direct the other day
The black edition has no stock cooler. And the Zalman 9700 isn't that great. I would get a tuniq tower or a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme. Those are both superior.
The CNPS 9700 isn't "crap" obviously whom ever claims it to be either installed it wrong, or pointed the exhaust Upwards or used too much TIM.
On my Q9450 @ 3.5 with the CNPS9700 my CPU is kept at a cool 31c idle never goes over 45c loading through Prime blend. Best thing of all, as soon as load ceases it almost instantly is back at idle temps, that's called "efficient cooling".
Jab, stay with the CNPS9700. Apologies if this seems flameish, just hate ignorant people giving the wrong advice.
It's better to have a solid base system with an 'ok' CPU for now and wait until AM3 comes out to upgrade his CPU. What's a good CPU worth if something else that's critical blows because he skimped to get a better CPU in the here and now?
It's *ALL* about planning and thinking long term.
I'm a huge fan of all your vids man except this one. I'm and AMD owner and have always owned an AMD chip, but Intel is the much more logical choice currently. An E8400 will tear the 5000 BE up not to mention it's 45nm.
I have a build that i can email you so you can look at it, Intel for the same price.($1,549.88) Should give you better performance.
The main issue: upgradability. If he goes Intel he gets *locked* to a CPU/Motherboard combo. Additionally Intel charges much more for their parts any way.
A new Intel CPU comes out he'd have to replace his motherboard.
A new AMD chip comes out on a *different socket* and he can keep his existing motherboard.
Who says? Intel has been using LGA 775 since the Pentium 4. If he gets a half decent board he will most likely be able to just upgrade his BIOS or order a BIOS upgrade for $20 from companies that add functionality you want.
That was in reply to you talking about being locked in and not being able to upgrade. Also, being able to upgrade to an AM3 CPU from an AM2+ motherboard is dependent upon there being a BIOS which supports it. As we have seen from past history (AM2 to AM2+) only a few motherboards will end up actually being able to do it.
Intel motherboards are from what I've read simply not *forward* compatible. You can't drop a 1333 FSB processor in to a 1066 FSB board. If this has changed in any way then I have obviously missed it. Why rip out a mobo just to upgrade a CPU?
Secondly Intel charges a premium and doesn't have any quad core CPUs available at this time unlike AMD.
Thirdly we should support AMD over Intel any way. Think about what would happen without AMD. Think about what happened when ATI disappeared for...
...for over a year. Could you get an affordable DX10 GPU with a 256-bit memory interface or greater for $150? Try nearly $400 and that was *NOT* for SLI. These companies will suck you dry if they establish a monopoly. There are also plenty of social-political issues that I won't get in to for why I don't recommend Intel (in support for America as in for *Americans*). I won't get in to that now though.
He doesn't need 100FPS, he needs playable FPS. Why blow unnecessary money any way?
Regardless, chances are you will still end up needing a new motherboard to use an AM3 chip. If you end up getting lucky, more power to you.
I don't feel any obligation to AMD. If AMD makes an inferior product, I expect inferior sales of it. What do you mean exactly Intel doesn't have any quad cores like AMD? Every CPU with a Q is a quad.
Intel doesn't make quad cores, they only sell duo cores. Now you might be mistaken since they take two duo cores, stick them together, and call them a quad core; but you're still buying duo cores. :-P
Intel sells "Technical quad cores" not "True Quad Cores". The 4870 is a good choice. And as far as the 1066/1333 goes its about what the motherboard supports. If it supports "conroe cores" then you can put any conroe core regardless of the FSB and it will work fine.
Price-performance wise it's forced nVidia to issue price reductions on their 260/280 GPUs. Plus by the end of the summer he'll be able to add a second card.
i got the same power supply, its NICE

looks to be a solid build,
althought I would change the cpu heatsink
I had the same zalman and at load it's pretty noisy, check the zerotherm nirvana out
I would've said the thermalright ultra extreme with a Scythe Slipstream fan but you need to buy the AM2 backplate seperately
johnaiton 3 years ago
Yeah mine sounds like a vacuum cleaner when set to high. We should probably look at more heatsink reviews.
