  • As a fellow musician who shares ethnical background and unique style of guitar playing with Junior Campbell,I am quite interested in how he came to play that way. I had hoped to obtain his email address and compare our technique to what some may consider a challenge. I know back in the day lefthanded guitars were almost nonexistent. For me it was easier to flip over a righty than restring it. Then you still had to deal with the tone and volume controls in an inconvenient place either way.

  • They look like the Bay City Rollers on acid! In reality, they are the Marmalade doing psychedelic music.

  • obsessed with this song!

  • reflections was always the best one but this one rocks. They were very talented.

  • they almost sound a little like the hollies!

  • @tomzambelli I agree also the music reminds me of Pictures of Matchstick Men.

  • Good memories. Just started junior high school when this song came out--my "Wonder Years."

    Super cool guitar solo!

  • ...que época del rock armonioso, vocalizaciones cuidadas y esmeradas

  • Thanks for correcting me. And by who! It's a great honour. I read the 're-recording' comment under a video with a live version of "Reflections Of My Life". Btw, the solo of "I See The Rain" is world class too!

I make music too, you know: just type "Rob Haccou" in the search field of Google or Youtube for some of my vids, if you're interested. Thanks again!

  • I just heared Hendrix re-recorded 'Hey Joe' after hearing this song, so the lick 'Tha tha...tha tha...thaa or 'b d b g e' (in musical notes) is not his! Wauw! That's really big news for me.

  • @Rubduck54

Nice idea - but unfortunately, not true!!

Jimi, Noel Redding & Mitch Mitchel recorded "Hey Joe" in the autumn of 1966 - released December 1966.

We wrote and recorded "I See The Rain" spring '67. I used Jimi's "lick" in the song - thankfully, he approved! regards jNR.

Check out "Hey Joe" on Wiki.

  • @wcampbelljunior thank you for the great music!

  • @wcampbelljunior

As a musician who started in the 60s...and loved, and played, a lot of your songs - its nice to see somebody who can still remember what went went on at the time. Still going strong and still playing - I always wondered bout that lick too...Ive "borrowed" it for several things and it still sounds good..I heard you mentioned on Ken Bruce Radio 2 today ..Good stuff keep on giving us the best music Junior,,Nice to know youre still with us and doing what you do best.Happy New Year

  • fantastic

    thanks for posting

  • John dean with a grandma shirt!! funny.

  • what a great song , its 44 years old , much better than the music in 2011

  • nice trippy outfits & dig the shades !!

  • Actually it sounds very good. I can 'listen' past the bad in this case. That means it has to be pretty good if it can still compel me. Something I noted about the Beatles music, especially early on, was that the songs all sounded good on a monaural player. And stereo wasn't needed in order to lend the song that extra something that it otherwise lacked as a piece. FWIW

  • Tell me why it s possible that this song wasn t a hit in the UK

  • Comment removed

  • Me too saw them 67 when i was 18. In the Markee in London. I was so impressed!!! Dindn´t know if i am male or female. Thats true.

  • Saw them in 1967 in a tiny hall in a village called Prickwillow near Ely, 20 miles from my home in Cambridge. Went to see them after buying this and loving it. They were amazing live but when I tried to talk to them afterwards it was very difficult to understand their thick Scottish accents.

  • cool song! It came out a year before I was born but I hold it over any of the crap that is out now. Love the bass!

  • DOES ANYONE KNOW IF A JERRY REILLY WAS EVER A PART OF THIS BAND? PLEASE REPLY THANKYOU!

  • @liamr3 No - Never. Check Wikipedia "The Marmalade" There is a pretty comprehensive history & biog

    regards Nim

  • @ShunLifeify - Ah, I am SURE that's what I like about you - such refined kindness. Success, of course is relative, but I think that after 40+ years in this business, I can claim to be successful. My point, though was simply that, like, Marmelade (McAleese and Campbell especially), a lot of good music went overlooked then and still does today. There are a lot of good bands out here; a lot of good music being made, just the same as then. But perhaps I am delusional. Kind of you to notice.

  • Jimi Hendrix liked this song!

SB: What do you think about the commercial pop scene right now?

JH: [Simulates a confused stutter] Well, have you heard the Marmalade and their record “I See the Rain”? I don’t understand why that wasn’t a hit.

(From Steve Barker's 11-67 interview with Hendrix)

  • John Entwistle of The WHO played one of those basses back then too

  • thanks for playing dublin with the move lads.great band, completely under rated

  • After listening to what seems like music forever-I love finding great tunes like this,Awsome song

  • @edzick917

If you like this band, look up 'Kings of convenience' also. They're a new band. but their sound is really wonderful.

    greetings from Iran

  • Sounds of the '60s. Great stuff. Lovely harmonies.

  • many thanx .. great clip ! great group !!! Lyndloo..x

  • twho is the guy barking at the end?Almost killed my trip

  • the bassist reminds me,completely stoned, the singer reminds me who i would like to fuck

  • @GabrielDhalaman which bassist?

  • @jnuhjnuh Good point - In his purple haze he hasn't sussed there are two - or maybe just doesn't have a clue - the generally don't - about anything!

Dean Ford made many mistakes with his dress sense, but this page-boy look I fear is his worst

  • thank god i can travel in time and watch them live in 67 and them come back here to watch them on this fake thing called youtube

i had such a talking with cassady and ginsgerg, allen ginsberg last night, wow

  • I SEEEE THE RAAAAAIN AGAAAAAIN

    aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh

    till tomooorrooooooowwwwwwww

  • Better than 'Reflections'.

  • Is that lead singer Dean Ford????

  • Love the Dano Longhorn.

  • Great band really dynamic and very tight, saw them at the Clay pidgeon in Eastcote

brilliant 60's venue where you could see top groups most weekends. The forerunners of Sweet (Wainwright's Gentlemen) were almost the resident band.

    Happy days.

  • @redtinman10 liked sweet , even as good when they started writin their own music, check out b side of little willie,/ they didnt know how 2 play guitar yet/ but check out the 45, youll laugh, but u will luv it

  • Where in hell did you find this??

  • I like the rough bass sound on this.... works well...

  • Not just an amazing song and band but a very cool video to watch. Seems rare indeed. Feels like you're right there with them.

  • Great bass technique at 1:00 !!

  • brilliant slice of psych-pop and the best number the marmalade ever did, by far.

  • This is another great song...and yet I've never heard it before today. Why Not? I used to go to sleep with a transistor radio clapped to my ear in those days so that I didn't miss any of the great new sounds that were coming out at the time. But I never heard anyone play this. Pity. It's really good.

  • what a lot of people dont realise is that Junior Cambell (the lead guitarist) played a right hand Fender, upside down and back to front..the same as Hendrix. who were both left handed...it was also tuned to open E...the same as Hendrix..intersting.

    alan..drummer Marmalade 67-78

  • @althemainman2474 Actually,I think that is incorrect, there was a major difference.

Hendrix did play a right hand strat, upside down, but he ran the strings as normal stringing ( ie, bass string (E) at the top), and to conventional tuning EADGBE, whereas Campbell quite literally turned a right hand strat upside down and tuned it to open E tuning, ie, EBEG#BE - saw him at the Marquee and couldn't figure what the hell he was playing, even if i turned my head upside down! unique, and unique sound

  • @rodballantyne yes thats sounds right..nobody could work out the way junior played his guitar..what do i know..iam a drummer !!!

  • @althemainman2474 It is so neat to hear the inside info straight from a member of the band itself. Don't you dare go away on us, Al!

  • @TheZuchinniman Iam still around and actually met up with Dean and Pat a few weeks ago inL.A. where they both live now..we also have a new labels deal with all our songs (we own the copyright)

  • Awesome video!

  • Happy Birthday Dean Ford, 65 years young today!

  • Great video, love it!!!

  • PLEASE join the Dean Ford Singer/Songwriter Facebook group to get our #s up! We're hoping Dean will do a live chat. Listen to Reflections of my Life and remember what a great Singer/Songwriter he is. Jimi Hendricks said he had the best song of 1967.

  • @Peachteatube What Hendricks reportedly said, was, that "THE MARMALADE"

had the "best single of '67" with I See the Rain"" - We can all see you are enthusiastic (very) about Dean Ford and so maybe you should be, but 4 other guys you know??

  • @rodballantyne You are correct of course. I didn't specify the song; thought the Hendricks ref and Dean's writing the song were enough. Thanks for making it more clear. LOTS of other guys in The Marm, eventually. Still touring in Holland and Germany. The othe lads went different ways. Junior has been spectacularly successful in the UK. Dean, not so much.

  • @Peachteatube I always thought Junior Campbell wrote this

  • @ignatiousbrogan This was written by Junior AND Dean. :-) Please join the FB group for Dean Ford - Singer/Songwriter.

  • @rodballantyne Most Americans know 'Reflections.." but they have no idea who sang it. My purpose with a DF group is to recognize Dean's efforts after decades of inattention. Most of the other guys have FB pages, one has a bar in LA, etc. I just wanted people to know who Dean was and that he still is.

  • GEWELDIG!!!!!!

  • Great song. I bought a box with all their recordings. Not a really bad song on it !!

  • After the movie Romeo and Juliet came out around 1967, some musicians started wearing the tunics and fancy costumes. It was a great movie! Had a big influence on fashion for a while.

  • What a gay band

  • @iDrStix yes... now assume the position!

  • @wfd57fatman Sir, Yes, Sir!

  • and there they are folks paul mccartney and brian jones the great switch that causeed the p.i.d an welcome the rolling stones

  • @brainvisionfilms - what the fuck does that mean??

which one is supposed to be PM and which BJ??

  • I am so glad I found this song on the Nuggets II compilation. So many diamonds in the rough!

  • me recuerda a Scooby Doo.... jjj xD

  • Thanks to You tube I've really been getting stuck into the Marmalade. As a kid I remember them as just another British Pop band - how wrong I was. This songs an eye opener - a great band up there with the best of their generation.

  • Thanks to You tube I've really been getting stuck into the Marmalade. As a kid I remember them as just another British Pop band - how wrong I was. This songs an eye opener - a great band up there with the best

  • It does have a sort of Hey Joe feel to it, by Jimi.

  • @bolivianex If correct, Jimi did not write 'Hey Joe'.

  • Correct not sure who wrote the original but its a very old song.

  • @bolivianex I looked on Wikki. 'Everyone' claims to have composed 'Hey Joe'.

  • @bolivianex The Marm did a GREAT version of Hey Joe

  • This song was co produced by my friend Graham Nash....and Jimi Hendrix voted it as his favorite song that year...acclaim indeed !

    Alan Whitehead..drummer Marmalade 1967-1978

  • They look so damn young, especially the singer.

  • Never heard this song before . Arte Johnson says very interesting . What I hear is a tight band . And not sure what Mr or Ms Cringe meant but if in a negative sense this sure beats the mediocre half talented mix lifters of today . No creative abilities whatsoever .

  • @pmoyer50 Very true. But, it's very tragic and distressing to be in this 21st century but maybe music no longer a fascination for the masses.

  • Pretty Things! If you like this check out the Pretty Things (A "She's a Lover" live performance video is on here somewhere)

    Cheers!

  • Good art doesn't gets older. I live in Brazil.

  • The Beatles, Hollies and Hendrix influence is obvious...always wondered why the hell these guys didn't make it bigger, their musicianship and vocals were outstanding!

  • @raponte1955 well we did have 10 hit records, and were not influenced by the Beatles or the Hollies or Hendrix..although Hendrix loved this track and voted it his fav song of the year..actually think it might have influenced Jime funnily enough

    Alan Whitehead..drummer Marmalade 1967-1978

  • @althemainman2474 Hi Alan. I saw you in 67 at the Granada in Kettering Northants. The Who, Traffic and The Herd were there too. Still remember it. Great days.

  • @bazmcginnty your so right..great days indeed!

  • cringe time!

  • First of all - great band and MacAloon and Campbell were a great writing team. However, please remember that during this time and up until some shows like Midnight Special in the 70's - almost no one played live on television. They weren't set up for it and having done it, well it sounded pretty bad there and on the air. All bands had tracks they could lip-sync to. It was the common practice. AND - not to blow my own horn, but my band still makes music like this - look us up here on You Tube.

  • smithfieldfair@

    Actually - it's "MacAleese"

Dean Ford's real name was Thomas "MacAleese"

  • Actually, I knew that - must have just warped out for a moment. MacAloon? Maybe for more than a moment. Still, in all serious overlooked vocalist, band and Campbell was a great songwriter. Cheers! Mcdbs

  • @smithfieldfair I will look you up. This music should come back somehow.

  • whats your point

  • @steverobable - My point was a reply to an earlier comment about the sound and video not being insync and wondering if this were 'live'. Simply stated - everyone lipsynced during this time. It's probably also why they are laughing at times - they probably couldn't hear very well and weren't sure where they were in the song. Simply conjecture, that. Beyond that - my point was simply that they were a great band. Does that answer your question? If not, I'm not certain of the point you refer to...

  • @smithfieldfair

    It's MacAleese

  • Playing in a band in Ireland in the 60's with Rory Gallagher, Gary Moore Phillip Lynnot ,Van Morrison all fronting their own bands, we adored Marmalaide. Only recently, did I realize we were ripping Marmallaide off.. They were amazing

All the talk about their relationship to Hendrix (my hero) Has anyone noticed their great guitarist was also a leftie like Jimi ( meself)

  • @muksav Junior Campbell, the leftie guitarist, played the solo in Reflections. Not only was his guitar always strung for a rightie, so he was playing 'upside down', but the Reflections solo is actually the forward main theme of the song played backwards! Upside down and backwards: none too shabby.

  • hendrix loved this tune....no surprise there.

  • I can hear Hendrix in Marmalade or could it be Marmalade in Hendrix?.That riff sequence. If they worked in residence or on tour,I'm not surprised.Influence at work here.

  • Just plain fantastic!

And don't miss Susanna Hoffs and Matthew Sweet' s modern cover.

  • lol none of them are playing i just relized that. none of the gutairs are pluged up to amps n the dummer is most def. not playing anything.. still a grate song tho... :)

  • full version

    watch?v=KhziEwQ8akY

  • Top Five things about this Video:

    1. The Drummer. Is he playing?

    2. The lead guitarist. He must like Hendri

    3. The rhythm guitarist. Awesome sideburns.

    4. The bass player. He knows his shit

    5. The lead vocalist. Wicked voicex

  • I heard Hendrix liked this song quite a bit and he lived in England for some time. They were contempories, weren't they.

  • I believe they both played residency at the Marquee in London around the same time, I think they also toured with him

  • And you never noticed that the lead guitar, Junior Campbell plays not just left handed, but strings upside down too boot.

  • the bass player is amazing, thank you so much for uploading this video its such a beautiful song. me and my band are going to cover this song and when we do im going to post it on youtube for everyones entertaiment. thanks again for the vid.

  • Does anyone know if the singer is Dean Ford? He doesn't look or sound like his other videos. I've never seen a guy that looks so differently in every video.

  • Yes it's Dean Ford, one of their earliest videos

  • ahead of their time much?

  • Déjà vu!! Marquee Club, London '67.

Skint, but queued all the way down Wardour St to see this lot - blew me away!!

don't know where you found this vid - thank god you did - thanks - they look so young - didn't we all?

  • i bought this when it first came out and considered it a great piece of British psychedelia. it didn't do much chart wise. Then they recorded Ob Bla Di which was a huge hit and something fundamentally changed. The band went on to further success with the likes of Reflections Of My Life. which was very good, but I still like this ealier song and the promise that it showed. I rank it along side See Emily Play by Pink Floyd as a great example of 60's alternative pop.

  • It's too bad they were only flirting with the idea of psychedelia.

  • Solid tune

Good job for Dutch, German, French TV unlike us British who wiped the fucking tapes because they thought ROCK N' ROLL was a faze that kids were going threw

    God bless the BBC, NOT

  • scottish band writes song about the rain! Somethings never change...

  • Hey, hey, hey....Wow! Sounds groovy good ta me : )

  • cool sound

  • I will bet many people who discover this bands better songs will be suprised. Many are familiar with a couple, but overlooked ones like this nice effort. Great harmonies. Anyone who makes fun of the videos need to understand many bands at this time where being serious and goofy at the same time.

  • I got ya, DAVWAVE.

  • Right on.

  • : }

  • This a truly CLOUDBURST sound.

  • This clip would have them voted "Band Least Likely to survive the Punk Era!" Great song, if a bit dated.

  • Met a member back in April at the Inveroran Hotel in Scotland.. Not sure which one but he was playing a mandoline. Nice chap and this is a choooon!

  • two bass guitars got to be unique

  • Note the horned Danelectro is a 6-string guitar . . .

  • Properly called a baritone guitar, they were tuned much lower

  • ..also sure I read somewhere that Hendrix said it was his own personal favourite record of '67!

  • this is better than hendrix, they wouldnt pick him as a favourite....marketing sucks

  • It's true cabagu2. Hendrix DID state that this was his favorite record of 1967. You can hear the Hendrix influence in the refrain after each line in the chorus.

  • I'll vouchsafe for ya, MattHatter, I've just recently bought their Best Of cd and it says so...

  • You are right...I can hear the Hendrix soul in there...smiles....love it...love it...

  • Love this tune so much, put it on my i-pod when walking stoned in the rain, bliss!

  • Amazing track...such a shame they covered that awful Beatles track and ruined their reputations forever! There must be more stuff like this by them knocking about though?

  • Wonderful to hear this again, I lost my 7"45 of this years ago. Fantastic band, great song.

Shame about the video, so out of sync /miming so poor. But still a thrill. Thanks a million. And what wrong with Danelectro's? Like Gretschs, everyone uses them for videos........

  • woah danelectro longhorn bass pretty sweet

  • Danelectro currently making a bit of a comeback......hopefully it wont last long lmao

  • actually, it's a longhorn guitar... ;-)

  • Tune !!!

  • wow, i heard this on nuggets and it blew me away! great band!

  • Did they write their own songs?

  • Love this song, one of the best of 1967.

  • Fantastic, One of first records i ever bought. Went out and got myself a fuzz box the day after lol. And also the 'B' side to this, 'Laughing Man' a great tune with super snare sound for the time.

  • @FatJud thanks for that..I was using Evans oil filled skins, and a ludwig..my favorit drum kit (I had 4 kits)..I always used this set for recording

    Alan drummer 67-78

  • Great!!!!

  • I love it!!!!

  • A lost classic, this is better than some songs from The Beatles, Yardbirds, Rolling Stones... Marmalade is fucking very underated

  • AMEN!

  • @oscaru2110

Showed up on the Nuggets II collection. I read somewhere that Jimi Hendrix called this his favorite recording of 1967, quite a statement in a year in which the Beatles released Sgt. Pepper's and MMT, Pink Floyd released its first album, the Stones released Ruby Tuesday, Dandelion, and 2000 Light Years from Home, Traffic released its debut, Cream released Disraeli Gears, and Hendrix's own band released its first two albums (not to mention stateside releases).

  • @mackb909 Hendrix prob meant "favourite single" (45rpm) - i think he just liked the band - he & Noel Redding could often be spotted in the gloom of the Marquee Club during the Marms residency there - also members of future icons like Genesis etc

I seem to remember the Marms supporting Pink Floyd during the Syd Barett days and blowing them off the stage - the summers in London always seemed to be hot then - hope all around for great days & better things to come - now I can't see 'n me back hurts

  • @rodballantyne: Thanks for the context. Are you serious re: can't see and your back hurts? If so, hope it gets better. In '67, I was a 12 year old in Dallas, TX, hoping for a way out; by the time I got to college the '60s were over but I was still looking for it. Marmalade: didn't chart here in the States until '70 with "Reflections of My Life," a great song but one of the most depressing themes ever; first heard "I See the Rain" when I bought Nuggets II in 2001. Are the Marm still together?

  • @mackb909 - I was joking about the back/sight etc - just the ravages of age compared to how young & fit i was when this came out - weren't we all.

They were a truly great live band at the Marquee when i saw them there '67. i moved to Canada years ago - wife/kids etc so lost touch of the 60's bands. I did find a pretty good biog on Wikipedia however - just type in "The Marmalade" It seems they all went their separate ways but i think there's a tribute band still going in the UK regards R

  • @oscaru2110 Good comment, but then you have to throw in the profanity? Why?

  • Think this was only a big hit in the Netherlands, is that correct?

  • Spot On, Fredje!

The Netherlands recognised The Marms long before anywhere else - apparently a well know Dutch DJ saw them performing this at London Marquee Club in '67 and went home raving about the band - regards

  • @Fredje52 yes it was, we did a few tv shows and toured holland...dont know why it never happened in the Uk

    Alan..drummer Marmalade 67-78

  • @althemainman2474 I wish I could go back in time and catch a vintage gig pairing The Marmalade with the psychedelic version of Status Quo. Did the two groups ever cross paths?

  • @althemainman2474

"dont know why it never happened in the UK"

Aye ye dae. Wrong side o the Tweed. ;)

  • @althemainman2474 sorry for this late reaction, but..... are you Alan Whitehead? You must be..!!

  • Fantastic! Jimi Hendrix liked this too...

  • This song for me represent the sixties! A FAB popsong!

  • amazing!
