I should add that when I say Bottlebrush is "softer", I mean against a Manzanita, Dragonwood or even Grapvine. It is harder than your average wood though. (ie:pine) To whiten and disinfect "found" bottlebrush, soak in a 10:1 Water/Bleach solution for 15-20 min. Rinse well, sun dry. Bleach become inert fast.
A variety of different types and sizes works best. Bottlebrush is nearly identical to dragonwood, once the bark is stripped off, which will happen rather quickly with Macaws. The bottlebrush is also a softer wood, so larger birds will chew right through it. My family and I have used BB since the mid-80's, due to us having the trees in our yard. If you have to buy your perches, go with dragonwood...it will last a lot longer.
