You're quite right, these days they aren't used for your typical 'warfare battle,' as I assume you were referring too. They are usually used purely to gain a psychological advantage over, or to challenge an opponent, like a rival sports team or college, or sometimes used as a congratulatory type of expression. In this case, we just lost the biggest secondary school athletics meet in the country, to a college we're bred to hate. So we were just really pissed off. :)
