dood i learned thisawhile back, and honestly it's such a great independence exercise to seperate everything out on. :) HE is the best drummer of all time screw neil peart.
@aunshi190 too true, good music is dying out at a stunning rate. musicians don't think freely for the most part anymore, it's all catchy pop tunes. gadd obviously thought freely as a musician and grooved, very much a 60's and 70's thing.
@blueoystercultmember i know it's hard to believe from looking around, but there's as much good music now as ever. the way the media and music industry function these days it's just a lot harder to find :)
when he first starts demonstrating the lick the first time on the hi hat his facial expression is hilarious. its as if he is saying "for the last freaking time for all of you morons who haven't bought my dvd that explains it"
@GetMeSomeDrumStix , yeah, it does hurt to watch. He can play so few notes, yet every one lays in EXACTLY the right place... like he's building a sturdy but cozy "home" for the rest of the band to reside in. (Or something. You know what I mean!) There are a handful of guys that can play "simple" QUARTER note beats -- mostly empty space -- but just make it melt in your mouth. I hate that some people blast Gadd (wow!). I've gotta give up the urge to try to "explain." If one doesn't hear it... ?
@scottp118 , i hear ya. Gadd couldn't get out of the pocket if he wanted to haha. and i agree with you on wat u said, alot of the time with drumming, less is more. its better to lay down a solid groove with an open pocket than try to out-shine everyone
if anyone can find a more solid samba bass drum pattern than this, let me know. also,it is amazing how he can take one sticking pattern and make it sound so many different ways
it's a left hand flam, and also, the second and the last note that plays the left hand -in this pattern- have accents. Notice that there's also a slight variation on how he hits the cowbell.
@andrew19vato aggreed it is a flam. But playing with both hands at the same time is an essential part of drumming and only sounds shit if you havn't practiced it. Especially when grooving.
@drex48239 On a single drum, it's a flam ( both hands at the same time awkwardly cancel each other out). One different drums, one should try to get both hits more or less simultaneously.
@BEOWULF282 dude u got it rite, and koodos to u for that. but if u listen carefully at the beginning, there is actually a rest between the both hands and the first right sticking. its a crucial componenet of the drum beat to have the eight note rest. so it would look like this.
Steve Gadd based his groove on the Mozambique in the hit Paul Simon song "Late In The Evening." Without his drumming in that song, I don't think it would be known as a "legendary" song. The other Gadd groove I was referring to is "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover," also by Paul Simon.
It's the same pattern all the way thru, from the hi-hat in the beginning to the snare/hi-hat playing at the end. Simplified it is - rL RLRRLRLRRLRRLR. Then just repeat(rL stands for flam of course). Or am I misunderstanding your question?

The basic hand pattern is

where B= both hands together, R= right hand, L= left hand. For the "B", try flamming it sometimes, it gives a different feel.

the amazing gadd feel we all love :)
not that tough sticking tho: S=both hands (flam-like)
SRLRRLRLRRLRRLR of course the accents and bass displacement are really tough..especially with that loose feel

i thought it was a flam... what makes it not a flam?
archonish 2 years ago
sometimes he does a flam...other times he doesnt...depends on drums hes hitting. i love when he does a bass-floor tom flam-very tough to incorporate smoothly

At 3:00 he doesn't add a beat. He ghosts one and comes in on two.
