  • I love it. I'm just learning how to play this, and I'm not gonna lie it's pretty hard. What sticks is he using?

  • W joey jordison!!

  • bravo!!! dr House!! xD

  • dood i learned thisawhile back, and honestly it's such a great independence exercise to seperate everything out on. :) HE is the best drummer of all time screw neil peart.

  • Who give's a crap if it's a FLAM or BOTH or a flam and both. It's great and hard to learn, so go practice.

  • its not a flam but both!! i need to do it on music lessons!

  • Dr. Gregory House best drummer of all time!!

  • @Drumric305 I guess Hugh kinda looks like Steve.

  • Needs more cowbell in my opinion.

  • best drummer in the world. full stop.

  • In a prisoners suit?

He is da man! That´s for shure... ho plays with such a feeling and passionate today?

  • @snorhyveln Well, I'm sure there are very many a drummer that can play, and perhaps surpass, Steve Gadd's talent. We just don't know about them.

  • @aunshi190 too true, good music is dying out at a stunning rate. musicians don't think freely for the most part anymore, it's all catchy pop tunes. gadd obviously thought freely as a musician and grooved, very much a 60's and 70's thing.

  • @blueoystercultmember i know it's hard to believe from looking around, but there's as much good music now as ever. the way the media and music industry function these days it's just a lot harder to find :)

  • He'll also show you how to fuck your girlfriend.

  • heheh steve gadd is the master, I got his technique the mozambique it's realy great..

  • Wow, 8 people are complete idiots!

  • sounds a bit like the music from countdown

  • I agree, it's a flam

  • i will never, ever, ever get tired of listening to this! hot stuff!

  • when he first starts demonstrating the lick the first time on the hi hat his facial expression is hilarious. its as if he is saying "for the last freaking time for all of you morons who haven't bought my dvd that explains it"

  • F = Left Flam

    R = Right

    L = Left

    l = Left ghost note

    F RLRRlRlRRLRRlR

  • if you want to see real afrocuban drumming search for a video of enrique pla.

  • When he switches to the cow bell he changes the sticking..

He actually plays on the 3 with his RH on the CB.

Tell me if you don't agree

  • @kenshireen no he doesnt, he actually keeps the exact same sticking it just completely changes the feel, such a great kind of music i love it

  • This is so much fun to play! Not that I do it justice the way THE MAN does it. But, yeah, learn it and play it!

  • He is Doctor House

  • @arbadique lol

  • Mellifluous.

  • this is the groove he played with dave weckl, and vinnie colaiuta!!! i was dying to learn it!!!! steve gadd owns !!

  • B= Both

    R= Right

    L= Left

    BRLRRLRLRRLRRLR

  • Does anybody out there know where I can get a nice bright sounding cowbell like this? So far nobody is making them like this anymore.

  • @pulgabros meniel has some nice sounding cowbells

  • @grooveman69 Thanks for the info!!!

  • this guy is possessed i think:

search "Amorphic drum" ...1st video result

  • I've been looking for an explanation on this beat. My favorite part is at 3:52!

  • Right hand plays : one - two - three and - and of four - and of one - two - three and - and of four .

Left hand plays : accented one - accented and of two - four - one - accented and of two - four.

  • Steve Gadd is ALWAYS playing MUSIC on the drums.

  • Gadd's so good it hurts

  • @GetMeSomeDrumStix , yeah, it does hurt to watch. He can play so few notes, yet every one lays in EXACTLY the right place... like he's building a sturdy but cozy "home" for the rest of the band to reside in. (Or something. You know what I mean!) There are a handful of guys that can play "simple" QUARTER note beats -- mostly empty space -- but just make it melt in your mouth. I hate that some people blast Gadd (wow!). I've gotta give up the urge to try to "explain." If one doesn't hear it... ?

  • @scottp118 , i hear ya. Gadd couldn't get out of the pocket if he wanted to haha. and i agree with you on wat u said, alot of the time with drumming, less is more. its better to lay down a solid groove with an open pocket than try to out-shine everyone

  • watching this reminds me of how bad i suck

  • GADD-DAMMIT THAT'S AWESOME!

  • "There... that outa hold ya for a while" Gadd doesn't skimp when answering your question.

  • 2:10 badass, more young drummers should apreciate the masters like gadd and weckl, not travis barker and joey jordison

  • steve gadd was one of buddy's favourite drummers, high praise indeed

  • Rl RL RRLR LRRL RRLR

    1 +A 2A+A 3A+A 4A+A

THATS A LEFT FLAM AT THE INTRO

  • if anyone can find a more solid samba bass drum pattern than this, let me know. also,it is amazing how he can take one sticking pattern and make it sound so many different ways

  • O MY GADD !!

  • it is not in the same time!! it is a flam!!

  • OMG - I love his way of playing, so much looking forward to April 25th in RockShop Karlsruhe! A "must-see"!

  • God Damn what a gift! The man is a metronome...

  • I can play that, until it starts to go crazy. Then I'm lost.

  • april 17th the helix dublin steve gadd , its gonna be special

  • @drumstool99 lucky man you are my friend! :P

  • Breaks into afro cuban. That's awesome.

  • yeah he is a master but was on drugs... xD omg!!

  • I must see him live before either of us die.....

  • He is ¡¡¡¡ THE MASTER ¡¡¡¡

  • steve gadd is so damn good. hes real technichal but he also has great feel to his beats, and dont get me started on his dynamics

  • Comment removed

  • anyone got the sticking for this? (the beginning part at least) i'm trying to pick it up but i just can't seem too... :(

  • B= Both

    R= Right

    L= Left

    BRLRRLRLRRLRRLRB

  • are you sure that its both left and right at the same time, it seems to me like a flam

  • its a flam

  • Yeah, you're right sorry.

  • it's a left hand flam, and also, the second and the last note that plays the left hand -in this pattern- have accents. Notice that there's also a slight variation on how he hits the cowbell.

  • @drex48239

    you're right

  • @drex48239 Yes, but when he gets on the rim it is both together.

Though, amazing. What a feel in his playing...!

  • @drex48239 it is a flam... listen to when he plays it on the hi-hats... its dead clear!

  • @drex48239 yeah its both, not a flam :D

  • @drex48239 its a flam

  • @drex48239 yeah man its a flam, you never do left and right at the same time cause it just sounds shit lol

  • @andrew19vato aggreed it is a flam. But playing with both hands at the same time is an essential part of drumming and only sounds shit if you havn't practiced it. Especially when grooving.

  • @drex48239 flam

  • @drex48239 it is a right hand flam alright.

  • @drex48239 i think he's just doing that because he's in the habit of accenting beat 1 when he plays it.

  • @drex48239 On a single drum, it's a flam ( both hands at the same time awkwardly cancel each other out). One different drums, one should try to get both hits more or less simultaneously.

  • @drex48239

    no it´s not at the same time ..... it´s a flame !

  • First note is a flam.

  • @BEOWULF282 F= Flam

    FRLRRLRLRRLRRLR

il flam con accento sulla mano sinistra...

  • @BEOWULF282 It should be a right handed flam not both at the same time.

  • @BEOWULF282 dude u got it rite, and koodos to u for that. but if u listen carefully at the beginning, there is actually a rest between the both hands and the first right sticking. its a crucial componenet of the drum beat to have the eight note rest. so it would look like this.

    |B RLRRLR|LRRLRRLR||

  • @unameit333 If you want to fill in the 16th note rest you can add another L as in

    BLRLRRLR|LRRLRRLR||

    Fun variation.

Anyway, this is why Steve G is the groove-freakin- meister!

  • @BEOWULF282 that B isnt at the end, just the begining

  • @BEOWULF282 Nailed the pattern, thanks!

  • @BEOWULF282

i believe that it is both at the same time :)

  • @BEOWULF282 Both or flam?

  • @BEOWULF282 *flam... not both. both is a double stop.. at least on the high hats its a flam

  • GENIUS!

  • lol!

  • COWBELLICIOUS!!!!!

  • Isn't it something else that the two most famous Steve Gadd beats are both on Paul Simon songs? Add to that, both songs were hits.

  • what song did he play this beat in, if any?

  • Steve Gadd based his groove on the Mozambique in the hit Paul Simon song "Late In The Evening." Without his drumming in that song, I don't think it would be known as a "legendary" song. The other Gadd groove I was referring to is "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover," also by Paul Simon.

  • amazing

  • So clean darling!

  • Buy the book "steve gadd up close" and it goes into full detail on how to do it.

    The basic hand pattern is

    B RLRRLRLRRLRRLR

    1 +a2e+a3e+a4e+a

where B= both hands together, R= right hand, L= left hand. For the "B", try flamming it sometimes, it gives a different feel.

  • @nadirsharav

    Thanks!

  • the snare is supraphonic 5x14??

  • does anyone know the sticking pattern from when he first moves on to the cowbell?

  • It's the same pattern all the way thru, from the hi-hat in the beginning to the snare/hi-hat playing at the end. Simplified it is - rL RLRRLRLRRLRRLR. Then just repeat(rL stands for flam of course). Or am I misunderstanding your question?

  • Is that groove that he plays from 3:42-3:56from a song? I love it!

  • Sounds like "late in the evening" Simon and Garfunkel!!?

  • Comment removed

  • Late in the Evening was on One Trick Pony released in 1980.

  • Try to listen from 2min 32sec of this video watch?v=Jvcx_SZJ7Nk

Steve Gadd, Eddie Gomez and Jorge Dalto (RIP). You may like that song. And in the actual video there are 3 different takes of it, awesome!

  • I'm just guessing at random here, but it MIGHT be "dream come true" by the brand new heavies ;)

  • The Best drummer ever lived. The end........

  • I love him to bits too. My fav all time drummer!

  • steve gadd is MD House

  • What a fucking groove machine. love this dude.

  • delicious groove

  • Steve Gadd's independence and feel make him legendary. He doesn't need flashy fills (though he can pull them out) hes just a groove maestro

  • exelente¡

  • anybody know what snare drum this is?

  • probably a ludwig supraphonic thats what he normally uses

  • there are also a couple clips of him using an acrolite. if it werent for the fact that he is steve gadd, yamaha would probably get pissed...haha

  • who is BAD, tony williams or steve gadd?... i dont know but i just love steve's style...

  • Cada vez que toco y se me sube a la cabeza, veo un video de este tio y vuelvo a poner los pies en la tierra...madre mia.

  • the master!

    excellent feeling and dynamics

  • just sing a long.....youll internalize and then eventually it will come in some form as you establish some sticking here.....if you can sing what you play .....u got a shot.......love it...

  • so dynamic , so melodic.....you can sing what hes playing!! thats why it works ....who needs other instruments when the complete melody is being played here....not a pattern but a rhythm song....this is what conga players and djembe players know....try to play these forms on the drums...not patterns.....not as a final goal anyway....music out of technique....Gadd is a master at this!!! RESPECT...RESPECT..... hey, thanks for posting this

  • i want to learn this so badddddd

  • R R L RRLR LRRL RRLR is the sticking!

  • well, you can do a flam at the beginning, that sounds pretty cool too, so:

rL R L RRLR LRRL RRLR or

lR R L RRLR LRRL RRLR

  • The man plays time and has such good dynamics.

  • listening to this, I can type faster and work happier.

    thanks for the post tomgadd.

  • Respect!!!

  • nice video

i always learn lots with him.

    tkx

  • At 3:41 I jumped to my feet and started doing the hustle all around my office - we aren't allowed to go on YouTube, but i don't fucking care. I almost got fired for feelin the Gaddamn music?! No way, the man can't keep ME down when Steve's doing his thing!

  • play steve!!!!!

  • lmao thanks

  • i played this rhythm at an army band audition and they said it was not what was on their sheets for the required mozambique rhythm to be played. they took my word for it that steve gadd said so and gave me a little bit of credit, and i passed my audition, but thats irrelevant. what IS mozambique if this in fact is not?

  • its based on a mozambique!

  • @hatboy770 was that your field audition, F1 or F2? Just curious. Best of luck in the Army band, if you did in fact join!

  • Beautiful! Groovy and powerful yet relaxed and light

  • NEEDS MORE COWBELL!

  • The daddy, most musical drummer out there still...

  • Gadd has been one of the best drummers in 70 e 80...

He is a very musical drummer and plays "with heart".

today the technical level is higher than gadd level(jojo mayer thomas lang weckl and colaiuta...and many others),but gadd remains one of the fathers of drumming...

    He has created a style!!

It's impossible do a ranking in drumming and in music.

  • I think the technical level was just as high back then (Billy Cobham, Vinnie, Tony Williams, it's just Gadd's style to play simpler) That said, I can't seem to get too close....

  • gadd is an UNREAL drummer... all the people who think travis barker is the best... get a fucking grip this guy is the best there is and his feel on the kit is simply unbeatable i have never seen anyone like him before.

  • hes not the best....and god no travis barker is NOT near him........but i still think jojo mayer blows gadd away......different styles but still..i think jojo could do this crap anyday

  • Jojo Mayer has incredible technique - no doubt about it.. but Jojo isn't near as versitile as Gadd.. gadd also has a better groove according to me.. another thing about Gadd is that he is also the most influential drummer in the modern drumming era.. so many have tried to copy him..

  • yeah i see what you mean i jus tthink gadd is a little overrated........he definetely does some tricky work, but its all just too boring for me....but yeah i def see your point

  • Here Here. Gadd is a musicians' musician. I find the weaker you are as a musician, the more you tend to think drumming is about tricks and chops. Anyone who has a go at Gadd just isn't a musician.

  • Anyone who has a go at Gadd has no soul. Besides, David Weckl's style is built from Gadd's...but be careful, you're on youtube; the land of mediocrity and pissing contests.

  • @IfIfsandands You're not the ultimate source for critique either fuckwad. I'll smoke you and Gadd anyday of the week.

  • @Youwishyoucouldplay ive seen you in five vids today and u fuckin abused people in all of them, you little shit, why do you bother coming on youtube you fucktard

  • @thomascompton800 I come on here to smoke you non player false idolizers out dude. Like chill and get w/the rrdrums program dude. dig? I smoke your ass like the 4th of July nightime sky. Did that answer your measly little mind question?

  • @rrdrums1111 fuck off i wasnt talkin to you you little jew

  • @thomascompton800 dude i know rrdrums is a fag who doesn't know shit about the culture of drumming let alone drumming in general and what ever he sais i don't give a shit because he's a huge fan of the cock. :)

  • @IfIfsandands Platitiude and totally unscientific opinion dude. It'slike me saying that for all eternity of you don't put Tony Williams at the top of the heap your a lousy drummer. Just doesn't work that way.

  • crap? you just dissed one of the greatest drummers in history. You should be ashamed!

  • lol

  • travis baker is a joke!!! its neccesary see only 2 vids of weckl, gadd, chambers, etc

  • I did tht today at school learnt to to the beat finally cracked it

  • now just work on that grammar and spelling.

  • are there heads on the sticks?

  • Steve is the inspiration, just learned the basic version of this groove.

  • the amazing gadd feel we all love :)

not that tough sticking tho: S=both hands (flam-like)

SRLRRLRLRRLRRLR of course the accents and bass displacement are really tough..especially with that loose feel

  • i thought it was a flam... what makes it not a flam?

  • sometimes he does a flam...other times he doesnt...depends on drums hes hitting. i love when he does a bass-floor tom flam-very tough to incorporate smoothly

  • At 3:00 he doesn't add a beat. He ghosts one and comes in on two.

  • Drumming sincerity at it's best

  • he is God!!!

  • no, he is GADD! LOL

i really like his style, he really plays with a lot of feeling.

  • He is God

  • he adds extra beat around 3:00?

  • looks like hes wearing a mechanic uniform lol...who cares...listen to this mans playing!!!!

  • great groove to cop
