after seeing this 35 years later,I pictured the old woman much creepier.though it's still good.what's really chilling is the high pitch sounds being made as she's about to open the door to her bedroom.and her reaction is priceless! HAIL CLASSIC HORROR!!!!!
The first time I remember seeing this was on a late night show called Creature Features which aired on WGN out of Chicago on Friday nights when I was a kid. This movie, particularly this segment gave me nightmares for years. I think it ranks as still one of the scariest movies I have ever seen, even today at the age of 40. Thank you so much for posting!!!!
Love this old movie, one of the best i've ever seen, first saw it when i was little and still love to see it and it does give you a chill or two when you watch it over and over especially in the dark all alone.
I remember seeing this in late 1973 or early 1974 when I was 5 years old. It was the first scary movie I had seen in my life. The dead women walking around was pretty scary for a five year old!
Scariest scene I ever saw. First watched it on a B&W TV around 1970 or so. Something about the lights, rain, music & Jacqueline's responses combined with the shock of that medium's face & hair. Now all these decades later, & it's sort of silly how fake looking the medium is, as a manequinn or puppet moving along that hallway. Still, Jacqueline's unexpected shuttering spooked me out even tonight!
i saw this as a kid, and to this day - my sisters and I talk about this flick. SCARY isn't strong enough word. My mother saw a dead lady in Sicily when she was young - and they coudn't close her eyes.. she said this looks like that dead woman. Yeah, it's scary and dead people CAN look like that. Sweet dreams - I'm going to bed now.
this movie is one of the scariest ones i have ever seen. first saw it back in 78 as a 12 year old,and it scared the living shit out of me. Would be a good movie to show to someone who was never seen it before and was about 11 or 12. They would probable be afraid of the dark for years to come. ha ha
yeah, absolutely terrifying! i was dissapointed to see that part 3 on the italian version wasn't to be found! with so little dialogue, i would have liked to see this with the clarity and incredible richness of color contained in the european versions you have posted! now i just have to learn italian!
YO, omg. I have this on video cassette. My dad used to watch this as a kid, and it scared the crap out of him. He kept it for me when I was a younger kid... and that old woman that came after that girl for that ring always scared the CRAP out of me. Scariest scene ever.. and the mood... wow.
I saw this at the theater when I was 10. My brother, sister and I tormented each other for years by putting on a wig and nightgown and approaching one another on unexpected dark evenings, candle in hand.
the heavy metal band "black sabbath" got their name from this movie after ozzy & the band saw it. they wanted their music to scare people as much as this movie scared them.
I expected it to be good when I saw Mario Bava's name on the credits, oh so many years ago. But this...chilled me to the bone. I've just re-watched it, and it still haunts you. A great piece of classic horror, without a single computer effect to be seen. Only my first viewing of The Ring was almost as creepy!
this movie scared the crap outta me, I was watching it in my room at night, and I nearly shit myself. And I thought I've seen enough horror to not get scared, but I was wrong
Man, that was much scarier than I was expecting. I actually got chills! The way the light changes and the expressions shift just ever so subtly... really effective. Thanks for uploading. Do you have the entire "telephone" portion?
This is for me one of the scariest films of all time... the atmosphere, the vivid color, the palpable fear. I don't think ANYONE woud want to really experience this! Sheer brilliance. And this film is indeed the namesake for the band.

I didn't care much for the rest of the movie, this was the best segment. Wasn't there a scene of the old seahag lying in the tub?

One of the best short films ever made along with Terror at 20,000 Feet from the Twilight Zone movie.

I've never seen this before. So genuinely simple (effects, props, etc) yet no horror movie made today can even come close to being this creepy.
Older horror movies are so MUCH better than the ones today.

This certainly is more scary than the Exorcist'..its the images of death
and dark shadows combined with
ungodly noises. This film caught
something in its frames that most people fear the greatest! and thats being alone
in a haunted house with no electricity.
globehunter2 2 years ago
This scene captured the total essence of fear! the sheer helplessness of the woman facing a living dead body, it
grips you like a magnet what a capsule
of pure horror. The old lady,s spirit was
the core of this film` I never will forget
how I was terrified at age 17 by this
movie.
