Some of the toughest warriors I have ever met have been gay. I have served with women and men who have been in Afghanistan, who have been part of sea-borne operations, who have done peacekeeping, people who have done and seen things that Sen. Santorum does not have the courage or character to handle.
Religion is also a behavioral issue. Should religious people not be able to serve in the military either? Having people openly praying and in closed quarters would make the atheists feel uncomfortable and discourage them from serving, lower their retention, and ruin the group cohesion. After all they are all volunteers and they don't have to join in a place where they don't feel comfortable serving. They don't have to pray; it's a behavioral issue and that makes all the difference.
People are still in the dark ages about the concept of homosexuality, it's been proven its not a choice, it's the same as being born black for an example, its not something we can control. Religion is also a behavioral issue. Should religious people not be able to serve in the military either? Having people openly praying and in closed quarters would make the atheists feel uncomfortable and discourage them from serving, lower their retention, and ruin the group cohesion. After all they are all volunteers and they don't have to join in a place where they don't feel comfortable serving. They don't have to pray; it's a behavioral issue and that makes all the difference.

I've been unsuccessful in finding sound evidence that open homosexuality impairs military performance. Then theres the argument that less people would be recruited, when in fact, more would be, and I don't think I need to explain why. Santorum probably has nightmares about getting buttfucked, and IMO that's a psychological problem.
