I thought the sound track in this movie was incredible and I think the narration was just there to sort explain some of the details of the situation, but I can see where it would get annoying sometimes.
In my opinion the narration was only effective during the final hours of Robert Ford's life in this film. Then it seemed to me that he had to explain Bob's inner anguish and his loneliness and that Bob was too embarrassed to do so, even to Dorothy Evans. Thats my take on the narration
You sound like you felt it was your duty to find something negative in it, ya know its okay once in a while to find perfection in a movie, its no reflection on your observation skills as a critic. There were plenty of parts in the film that the narration played an important role, what about when the authorities surround the Ford cabin, or when Bob was on the train looking at the women and them depicting the wives of those slain by Jesse.....
and not trying to get touchy, but you really failed to acknowledge that you knew the narration wasnt put there with the sole puprose of explination, which would lead one to believe that you think it was...to which I would stress how lacking this film would be without its opening and closing narration. When he explains whats happening 'play by play', listen, and everytime you'll notice that its just an introduction to a bigger spread of thought.
I dont think the narration is present to help people understand the movie. I think it's present to demonstrate Ron hansen's amazing prose (the book is fantastic!) I also think it allows just a little bit more character depth. The narration is great..i love the beginning, which is lifted straight out of the book (as is all the narration) "Rooms seemed hotter when he was in them, rains fell straighter..." coupled with Nick Cave and warren Ellis' sountrack- Amazing!
Great film. It was a welcomed change to watch an actor portray a mentally challenged, prattling homosexual in love with Jesse James. My only complaint is that the movie should have been four hours longer. I really related to this film as a local coward shot my mexican maid while she was dusting my paintings.
I love this film. I never thought about it until you brought it up. The narration was well done, but was it needed at all?
Was it only there to serve a wider audience? Either way, this, like all original and tasteful films, fell upon blind eyes/deaf ears so what good does a dumbed down narration do for the sharpened sense/organ?
I like your parallel to an explained joke. It is indeed frustrating to a viewer who "got it" in the first place.
That was a good review. Thank you! I do pretty much understand why you're saying this and that, but I think, in my opinion, there's an alternative understanding about the narration. Sure, it's obvious and the jokes being spoon-fed, but what I see from the narration of this film is REALISTIC. The actors really have those realistic qualities on pausing after saying something, and the words come out realistically.
awesome movie, i loved all aspects of the film, i know you and some others disliked the narration i liked it tho ive always liked narration but opinons differ, great review.
I love the image at 0:53 where steam billows up around jesse. that scene is so effortlessly dramatic, its almost spooky.

you need to back away from the mic, use a pop filter, or talk to the side of the mic instead of directly into it

I thought there was no faults in the movie at all, the movie was also spot on about the real events.

Well to be fair, the only fault i felt was the narration apart from that it was a fantastic piece of work
