I've actually been working on one - unfortunately, there's not much to be done to one, since it's basically a cassette tape player hooked up to the mouth/eye servos. The best that can be done is adding in speed controls or slight distortion, which isn't very exciting...
1:28 forward is hilarious, those things are so fucking evil looking anyway but now its face resembles something like a terminator. also its mouth appears to be an audio jack, very warped shit. Thank You for this.
Your bent toys are epic. Those flashing eyes remind those of Terminator. And the button on its forehead is really disturbing, it sends a load of pain directly into its suffering brain !! :P
They're regular old LEDs from Radio Shack! They're mounted in LED mounts, which you can also get at RS. It focuses the light a bit more, so that might be what makes them look better?
That's just a regular 1M potentiometer with a Radio Shack silver dial. I don't have specific instructions for this toy, but it's basically just hooked up to a speed/clock bend on the circuit, which is usually the easiest kind of bend to find on any noise-making circuit board. It's not too tricky to find on your own with most toys, and if you can work a soldering iron, you're in business.
@carpeteria thanks. so do i just work with messing with the dial on different parts of the board to find which circuits are affected by the turning of the dial?
i look forward to working with one. seems like the variations of sounds with circuit bending becomes infinite with one versus only using a couple toggle switches.
Basically just touch around any board until it affects the pitch/speed of the sound. You can often find a single spot on the board that can do that, and you can remove the resistor and replace a potentiometer to control the speed. Sometimes two spots can be connected by a pot. and you can get similar effects - it depends on the toy. Good luck!
' like a power tool being tossed about in a blender that is tumbling down several flights of metal stairs.' <- now THAT is a quote I'm going to be using in the future.
Nope, this is a different one. This one had a much simpler CB - just a one button system with four looping sounds. I decided to just keep half of him (her?), and I sewed up the rest.
I see it has a distortion button, do you see a lot of distortion-like abilities in the newer toys coming out today? I can only find pitch bends on most
It's sort of a distortion/glitch combination. If I recall, it's wired between a capacitor, which is my usual weapon of choice between glitch points. It's true that pitch bends are the easiest and most commonly found bends, but most toys will do some kind of glitch or distortion if you play around with it enough.
Regardless, this isn't exactly a "new" toy, either. Probably about ten years at least.
Yeah, vintage ones are the best. Where do you usually find glitch/distortion points? i found that it usually comes from touching one of the speaker leads to any other part of the board while using a bit of resistance works sometimes
To be honest, there's no rhyme or reason to most of the glitching I find. Speaker leads often work well, but I sort of just go where ever I can (usually away from the battery leads).
I hope black blobs dont take over, i like the IC ones most also. I wonder whats under those things? Every time i pull one off, i just see a blank circle on the board lol. It rips the chip off with it
