I don't think the only problem there is NO progress on this problem is a Political one. I think a lot, and most of people feel that the average life span is long enough. Not including many things like murder which is not related to aging.

I just meet you in TEDMED, your question is remarcable despite very broad. Aging is a verb and envolves a continum of process, and for me as physical-chemistry involves entropy inevitable rising against time,defining time arrow. Avoiding aging could be a fight against entropy, it's not impossible, but in a so complex system as human body requires to put the machine to work microscopicaly in each process that increases entropy, have our machine the tools for that ?

You can indulge your every whim with the help of sophisticated entertainment technology, including virtual reality. You can visit other planets. There's always more to learn, more to experience. But you'd decide to just end it? Just dissemble your consciousness because of some notion that your life has been too long? I certainly would not!

@Aphradonis Well my friend, no matter how old you are you will die of old age in this lifetime and you will get very bitter about getting older while I on the other will not. I would hate to see your face on your death bed when you are an old gray haired man. I am sorry but this kind of cure to live and stay young forever in your life time will not happen, I believe there is an afterlife and that is all I have to say, Love God, he created you!

@21LightLove No, I will not be an angry old gray haired man because A) I guarantee my hair will never be gray, B) I want to live forever but I'm not going to be bitter if I can't, because that wouldn't help me at all. I'll maximize whatever lifespan I have, and C) I can want something without becoming angry or bitter if I don't receive it.

Well the trend seems to be expensive and not working to well, cheaper and working okay, and ubiquitous and cheap. Take the mobile phone for example billions have it know because its an established technology. Look up Ray Kurzweil.

You know what would happen if the aging 'problem' would be solved? If anyone would suddenly be able to live longer? Planet Earth barely holds the current population in balance. Humanity would suffocate in its own rubbish if people would suddenly stop aging and dieing. People should stop reproducing and start reducing the population of the world to a fixed number of not much than 500 million people -- it is the only way for the humanity to survive.

Aging and over (or under) population are two separate problems. Here in Russia Putin was promising mothers the money, so they have more babies. In China govenment held policy "one child per family" for the time beeing. So it is possible to control population.
Grey dawn (see my vid above) and degradation of human genomic pool due to absence of natural selection - these are the problems. Not tigers.

Yes, we can and must interfere. And the same with aging. People who are alive must have a right to choose between own life or death, and this overrides someone else's other rights e g right to procreate - there is no place? - do it in space.

Indeed but if they survive then natural selection has selected for them to live they have good enough genes to survive those who don't still won't, the human phenotype seems to be a culmination of natural selective pressures to be quite resilient to death before procreation hence our numbers and survial. I think personally that an expansion of life expectancy will also coincide with a drop in procreation, it seems currently that those having many children are also have the shortest lives.

Fight with the aging is creating more problems that better to be solved before the fight will begin, from lots of ethic questions to the huge problem of overpopulating the Earth. I believe in science and I believe that people will prolong their lives, but currently the idea looks like an another unreal utopia.
