the tax isn't because u are a non-muslim, but rather its because you are a citizen under the protection of the islamic community. it would be wrong to impose the islamic tax on the non-muslim, so another kind of tax was made for non-muslims called the jizya, and historically the jizya was always lower than the zakat taxes...the tax itself is a sort of civic service, regardless of religious belief, and the differentiating between the zakat and jizya is out of respect for those who aren't muslim.

I am a proud non-muslim. I too have my feelings as how Muslims should be treated. I work at a restaurant frequently visited by Muslims. yeah, real fair to run over a ten year old boys hand for trying stealing a small loaf of bread because of poverty and hunger.
islamic officers held a young boys arm under the wheel of a vehicle as another ran it over. the incident was announced on loudspeaker in front of a public crowd ridiculing the boy as he endure severe pain without even a trial or anything.

If you make a wild claim, I expect you to back that up instead of repeating your unsubstantiated assertion. Reading a translation of the Quran does you no justice, since that is not the word of God. The "disbelievers" you are referring to are militant groups that were being aggressive and hostile to Mohammad and his companions.

kelbo06, The Religion of Islam is not based on the actions of a group of Muslims doing bad things. Islam is based on The Word of God (The Qur'an) and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (sws). If I took notice of every wrong done by any person, I would never follow their faith. Instead look to a religion's holy scripture to find out whats its really about! Don't make that wrong presumption and don't ignore the verses I quoted!

"Jizyah" means compensation, is a tax (smaller than Zakat) payed to the state by able-bodied males of military age who did not have to serve; it was in a sense a commutation for military service. It had exemptions for the poor, females, children, slaves, monks and hermits. Jizya money goes to the government to provide protection for its non-Muslim citizens, and help finance the building of their Temples or Churches so that they can practice their religion freely.
