The timekeeper is not off. What he maintains is the base beat (tala). The patterns that Selva Ganesh plays are with reference to the beat. Sometimes he intentionally plays a pattern that is a quarter (or 1/3) off from the beat. This creates an effect. Somewhat parallel to the singer singing in notes which are relative to the base note (maintained by the tanpura).

Tala = Axiom. Percussion = Theorem.

The timekeeper wasn't off... It's played in a particular Raga which doesn't always have an even pulse... Carnatic music is different than Western music.

@Sushumna72 Raga? What are you talking about? There is no raga in the percussion piece. The time keeper wasn't off, rather he was keeping to the complex calculations of the Kanjira player.
