  • The timekeeper is not off. What he maintains is the base beat (tala). The patterns that Selva Ganesh plays are with reference to the beat. Sometimes he intentionally plays a pattern that is a quarter (or 1/3) off from the beat. This creates an effect. Somewhat parallel to the singer singing in notes which are relative to the base note (maintained by the tanpura).

Tala = Axiom. Percussion = Theorem.

  • Actually, the timekeeper does get a bit off every now and then, but for the most part he is on. He's still doing an amazing job, however. Oh, and you mean "tala," not "raga."

  • That guy who was clapping was bullied like hell. In the end he gave up the simple job of clapping

  • Freaks me out to hear so many different tones and textures from ONE DRUM...brilliant.

  • awesome play... juz luv it....

  • so small,so simple,so complex,so fuck'en good

  • Selvaganesh is the best........

    I love it

  • The timekeeper wasn't off... It's played in a particular Raga which doesn't always have an even pulse... Carnatic music is different than Western music.

  • @Sushumna72 Raga? What are you talking about? There is no raga in the percussion piece. The time keeper wasn't off, rather he was keeping to the complex calculations of the Kanjira player.

  • How fascinating, such a little simple looking instrument can create very complex sounding. Selvaganesh is like a martial artist.

  • Crap, meant to hit reply and accidentally hit remove. To the person who wanted to know if there was more of this online, click my name - I have three more clips from this DVD. The DVD is called Paris, and can be ordered online from Bardo Records.

  • I can never get enough of Selvaganesh's kanjira playing. His right hand technique is beyond amazing. Hard to put words to his level of discipline.

  • Nice...but one day I want to play even better...hah...I know, I am optimist...:-P

  • this guys' got the way to do it..

  • How can an instrument with 3 basic sounds keep my interest for 9 minutes! Best example of kanjira virtuosity on YouTube.

  • oh my god....

  • he is the best kanjira player!

  • god damn, some of the best all in one room.

  • Too good!
