I actually like the side-opening rear doors. I'm above 6' tall, so tend to hit my head on the ones that hinge up.

Despite my preference for side opening doors, It is disappointing that the Rav-4 door opens on the left. In Japan they drive on the left - so if you're parallel parked, it makes sense for the door to open on the left side for loading. Kind of a pain in the USA where we drive on the right. It would be better to open on the right - the side of the curb.

what do you think crossovers are? xovers are 'CARBASED' suvs. the first gen Rav4 was loosely based on the Celica and Camry.  Why wouldn't a small xover count? Oh and btw all of GM's pushrod powered vehicles STILL get better mileage than Toyota's OHC design. Not discounting Toy's OHC, like you are GM's OHVs, but they can be high tech too. Silverado vs Tundra, Corvette gets 26+ MPG. Toyota, oh wait they don't make a competitor....
