In my youth I saw thousnads on AMerican young men dying far away in the jungles of Viet Nam for no good reason at all - they accomplished nothing and now 40 years later hundreds of Canadians and thousands of Americans had died once again half a world away from home for no good reason other than President Bush wanted to have a war he knew he would never win.

There seems a lot of arguments on here about the message of the song. Personally I think that it's clearly saying that soldiers are puppets used for other peoples gain. The people who are gaining stay safe and sound while people die. It also says that there comes a time when people need to say enough is enough. If it wasn't for soldiers fighting other mens battles then there would be peace.

This was written during the vietnam war most likely. I just saw Donovan at the Albert Hall on Friday for the first time. The concert was good because it was in keeping with the '60s - ie not over-produced, no hype and a little rough around the edges. The audience went wild when Jimmy Page came on.
