I think this commentator has a lot of information confused. Grassroots is a label given to the organization of a political candidate where that candidate's support is created by regular people at a residential level and not dependent on funds donated by large special interests and companies. It is not a knock on the people; it is actually a compliment where regular people support a candidate they believe will change government's function.

Wow, I made my original comment before I watched the entire video because I felt your contempt for the "Grassroots" from the beginning. But then I got to the end, and damn boy, you have some serious bad feeling for small community and the power of small community. I feel even more strong about my comments below now, especially the last sentence of paragraph #3.

I've watched his guy's videos before, and I like what he has to say. I it is different. It is nice to get a different perspective and he makes me laugh our of surprise! In this sense "grassroots" means the support comes from the people and that's why I don't understand why they say it like it's a bad or unnatural thing. It is exactly where the support is supposed to come from- the people. It's a good thing.

Our political system is strange to outsiders, because in spite appearances, it is still very "federal" in the way canditates are chosen. Every state has its own system, every party its own rules, etc. If you don't make change at the "grass-roots", change doesn't happen. We have been brainwashed to think that this type of activity is meaningless; that you can sit back and just vote in the national elections; that is false. As others have pointed out, you have misunderstood the term "grass-roots". This is in America, a very positive term that refers to support at the extreme local level that is not paid for or sustained by organized (usually "elite") power. We even have a popular term (don't know if it's in the dictionary yet) called "astroturf" meaning false grass-roots support, usually paid for by the organizations you refer to.

Yes, of course. You know the literacy rate in Vietnam for instance is on average higher than in the US. I have grown up in this country, and I have spread the word of Dr. Paul door-to-door. The predominant people supporting Ron (who aren't insiders, like in MeetUp groups) are middle, lower, and fixed income people. The 'cream' of society are limousine liberals and country-club republicans who support the status quo...
The "grass roots" refers to the ground-up support as opposed to top-down. It doesn't mean the navel-gazing meat-heads of society. It doesn't even refer to a people. It refers to a DYNAMIC...
The 'cream' you refer to may be the intellectual cream, but even here I find in the real world you are wrong. Most academics are dye-in-the-wool 'liberals' (or, rather, Marxists) who have no interest in abolishing soft money or the income tax...
I say this as an academic, and knowing that Ron is a scholar himself in the truest sense of the word. However, today's academic environment is governed by public funds (direct and indirect through cheap tuition loans, grants, trusts, agencies, etc.) and has become politicized. Ron's policies are a DIRECT THREAT to this revenue.
In conclusion, you may consider the cream to be those learned folks within your small circle of influence (perhaps in a mosque or an academic environment), but I assure you that Ron's widespread support isn't some utilitarian calculus, but rather righteous indignation of a corrupt system of enslavement of the 'Third estate' by the 'cream'.
The opposite of a grassroots candidate would be Hillary Clinton, the "juggernaut" candidate, that seems inevitable. Democrats elevate her because they are nostalgic for Bill Clinton, but they really know little about her or what she believes.
Getting elected by grassroots support is actually how it is supposed to work. Local precincts have conventions, they choose delegates to county and state conventions, and so forth. The reason it doesn't work more often is that most people are lazy, don't participate, and just look for a high-profile name to vote for.
"Grassroots" support just means coming directly from the people, not from a political elite (like in Europe, if someone isn't born or raised into the "right" background, they can't be elected). It is not an insult, it just means his support is real and not orchestrated.

You misunderstand the term "grassroots", Obaidkarki. It does NOT mean that some organization is paying people to fight for certain issues. It quite literally means "power from below" from individuals, bottom-up vs. top-down. Ron Paul is indeed a grassroots president.

Our political system is strange to outsiders, because in spite appearances, it is still very "federal" in the way canditates are chosen. Every state has its own system, every party its own rules, etc. If you don't make change at the "grass-roots", change doesn't happen. We have been brainwashed to think that this type of activity is meaningless; that you can sit back and just vote in the national elections; that is false. As others have pointed out, you have misunderstood the term "grass-roots". This is in America, a very positive term that refers to support at the extreme local level that is not paid for or sustained by organized (usually "elite") power. We even have a popular term (don't know if it's in the dictionary yet) called "astroturf" meaning false grass-roots support, usually paid for by the organizations you refer to.

Yes, of course. You know the literacy rate in Vietnam for instance is on average higher than in the US. However, today's academic environment is governed by public funds (direct and indirect through cheap tuition loans, grants, trusts, agencies, etc.) and has become politicized. Ron's policies are a DIRECT THREAT to this revenue.

In conclusion, you may consider the cream to be those learned folks within your small circle of influence (perhaps in a mosque or an academic environment), but I assure you that Ron's widespread support isn't some utilitarian calculus, but rather righteous indignation of a corrupt system of enslavement of the 'Third estate' by the 'cream'.
It's very simple: We want freedom.

The opposite of a grassroots candidate would be Hillary Clinton, the "juggernaut" candidate, that seems inevitable. Democrats elevate her because they are nostalgic for Bill Clinton, but they really know little about her or what she believes.

Getting elected by grassroots support is actually how it is supposed to work. Local precincts have conventions, they choose delegates to county and state conventions, and so forth. The reason it doesn't work more often is that most people are lazy, don't participate, and just look for a high-profile name to vote for.

"Grassroots" support just means coming directly from the people, not from a political elite (like in Europe, if someone isn't born or raised into the "right" background, they can't be elected). It is not an insult, it just means his support is real and not orchestrated.
