The policeman had accidentally let a woman into the house when he shouldn't have. Holmes showed him the pic of who he thought that woman was, and it turned out to be correct.

Yeah, Holmes showes him her visiting card, which, by the way, had no picture on it, when he recieved it from her. That's one of the few goofs I was able to detect in the whole series...
