  • STUPENDO..

  • Clare Torry was the guest singer they brought in to sing on this, it was 1972 or 1973.

In 2004, she sued Pink Floyd and EMI saying she was only paid £30 which the standard flat Rate at the time for stand in studio work . The basis was that her contribution to "The Great Gig in the Sky" constituted co-authorship with keyboardist Richard Wright.

She won her case and got £8 Million and all releases after 2005 credit 'Richard Wright/Clare Torry' for the "Great Gig in the Sky" on album sleeves now.

  • Does anyone know who the girl singing the intro is ?

  • @Samjeno ..As far as I know, It's Clare Torry. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

  • @wxclim8 youre right

  • I could listen to this nonstop 'til i died.

  • I cried the first time I heard this, I still cry sometimes

  • My first time listening to this song was last week during a test and I thought it was a guy in amazing falsetto singing it. It's amazing either way.

  • Did anyone else think the singer was a black woman originially?

  • @DayDreamAscent I've always thought. :)

  • @DayDreamAscent No, just you.

  • @DayDreamAscent No, just you.

  • @DayDreamAscent No, just you.

  • @DayDreamAscent I just always assumed that. I guess that's racial stereotyping...but in a good way:-)

  • not just the greatest song ever made, but the greatest song that ever will be made

  • Perfect. Never found the words to describe this song. Closest word is perfect even if it's not even appropriate...

  • @Cuemaster2011 I would say genius

  • Jimi Hendrix and Gary Moore are jamming with this song right now and they're laughing.

Jimi: "what an irony dude :P" Gary: "haha! yea!, btw you know when Gilmour comes?? I've missed this dude"

  • something about this album that makes me want to walk outside look up and think about what our society has come too and how we ended up here

  • i love this song i was really upset when it had been taken down thanks for uploading man

  • i can respect meddle and obscured by clouds but they dont beat later pink floyd

  • I never said I was frightened of dying.

  • I traveled around the world weaving in and out of time during this song.

  • ...three persons are already died..

  • i become Comfortably Numb while staring at The Wall listening to this song..

  • WHAT A BEAUTIFUL VOICE hope i don't have to pay to listen to this music although i am registred, i mean that i have given my life to You Tube, talking about Pink Floyd for i've got everything or almost concerning them either on vinyl L.Ps or tapes but as internet is new to me just wanted to know how it works

  • @butterflyandme159 are you serious

  • @butterflyandme159 I don't know what you're thinking but in the boat where they wrote their songs they smoked more than just cigarettes. They said it themselves in a bbc documentary

  • @snauta123 for sure they din't suck their thumb but the only ones who were still alive in a recent BBC program they wanted to reassure the parents and grand parents they've become also, thismight be the reason for, what's his name again from Pink Floyd??? smoked myself for so long have forgotten his name, said they had never taken any stuff and that their songs had nothing to do with it, honnest that's what he said ha! ha! well never mind the woman's voice is beautifull don't you think

  • I don't care if you disagree but imo this is the greatest vocal performance any human can achieve. perfect combination of melody, technique, difficulty, and passion.

  • who the fuck disliked this? why would you even click on it if you didn't like it?

  • If your still listening to this in 2012 give thumbs up:))

  • CHECK OUT MY REMIX TO THIS SONG ON MY PAGE!

  • Listening to that song makes me think that man can achieve anything. How does the human mind come up with such a far out piece of music what part of the imagination generates such an unusual sound amazing.

  • I'm so high and this song is still the same when I'm sober...........FUCKING AMAZING.

  • marvellous

  • the two top comments on this video really made my day - so rarely does the comment section on YouTube reflect well on Humanity

  • this is the sound a woman makes when making love with Chuck Norris :D

  • @wehec get a life

  • I'm being terminated next month and I only have one desire to fulfil before I leave this Earth... to make sweet love to this track....any takers??

  • Safe to say the best album of all time?

  • @ZombieKiller1909 i don't think you can ever say anything is the best music ever - because of genre tastes. But certainly the best prog-rock album ever? (although to be honest probably the only prog album i love)

  • @ZombieKiller1909 It's hard to suggest a better candidate. It's generally regarded as a milestone within modern music and I can certainly hear why. As someone else said, it's hard to compare genres though.

  • I want to listen to this on my deathbed.

  • justin beiber made 2 youtube accounts so that he could dislike this twice.

  • 1:08 HERCULEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSS!!!!!!

  • magnificent

  • I used to like this album...but then i got an arrow in the knee

  • It's like being high but without the drugs?

  • @dustybubbles2643 What the fuck make you think that they're high on drugs ,they said they never took any don't you watch T.V? ? ? ?

  • @dustybubbles2643 yeeeeeah, without the drugs...

  • ya know, people talk about the genious of the Beatles but Floyd's melodic structures are pure fucking genious.

  • @GameOf2Halves pink floyd is better than beatles in everyway.

beatles just did music but pink floyd made a mix of music, emotions, visual arts and drama.

that's why i'm a pink floyd fan instead of being a fan of porcupine tree, radiohead, led zeppelin, etc.

the bands i said made great music though, but pink floyd is better than every band i know

  • @pigsontherun Yeah, they put on an epic show. There are a lot of emotional responses to this music on this post, which are a clue to it's quality. Btw, apparently Radiohead got annoyed when they were compared to Pink Floyd. Imagine! Arrogant twats:-) No, but they are carrying the same torch I think (even if they don't).

  • @pigsontherun This is their best album for you, right? The Wall is a bit too polished by comparison, so this is the best one in my opinion.

  • Epic.

  • This is wonderful

  • Simply First Class !!!

  • I wish girls sounded like that when I fucked them

  • WOW

  • 3:34. "if your listening to this whisper your dying" :O

  • @theunmutablelegend Its actually "I never said I was afraid of dying" Lots of people make that mistake :)

  • i just eargasmed

  • This track is so amazing. It gets stuck in my head and I'm like, "damn, I wish I was listening to it right now!" And then I do and I'm happy. :D This chick's voice is soooo gooooooooood.

  • every time i have sex and finish up i listen to this. makes you feel like jesus :)

  • the tripping yr

  • ive been a floyd fan all of my life 53years,been to 18 concerts, and when i do die i also want this song played at my funeral full blast, what a way to go out thanks claire

  • Listening to the radio when this song came on. I said "God, I love this song!", and my friend, who was sitting next to me went, "Why? Its just some chick yelling into a microphone while some music plays". I killed him.

  • @BlueJay88 rofl

  • epicfatass- your eyes should be tearing up you gelatenous whore

  • Sounds as if while recording this Clare Torry was being decapited by Eugene and his axe.

  • One of their BEST songs! "There IS no dark side of the moon really.... as a matter of fact... it's ALL dark."

  • this track is sampled in "MORGAN ICS - GREAT ICS IN CHE SKY"

  • 1973 was the fuckin' year for Rock, man!!

  • Dude, my eyes are tearing up. Shit.

  • does anyone imagine a storm??!

  • @The123tanner This song when it was recorded by Claire Torry, the producers and the band members told her to Sing every single emotion. Angry, happy, sad, scared, calm etc. It is rather interesting and it was recorded once and only once and Claire was totally embarrassed. Roger Waters said "This is Brilliant."

  • Just.. Mind-Blowing (:

  • can't imagine what it must of been like there in studio when this chick lights this track up...must been of been mind blowing... is there anything better than creating music?

  • @rankooodle creating music on drugs;D

  • @rankooodle Funny you mention it. The singer for this song, for which name I cannot remember right now, actually didn't like what she had done, and thought it wasn't gonna go anywhere. She thought she did a terrible job because all the instructions that were given to her were "just think of death and sing to the microphone", and precisely for that, it is my favorite Pink Floyd song. You may disagree with me, and that's fine with me. I love all Pink Floyd songs, anyways. :)

  • @rankooodle Clare Torry. lol That's her name, sorry.

  • @rankooodle

    Babies?

  • A white girl with a black womans voice. Wonderful.

  • @TheJoeshmoer woawoawoawoaWOA!!!! shes white?!

  • @bmwmv8 Yeah, her name is Claire Torry. I looked her up on Google and she looked like some one from the Brady Bunch. But doesn't mean she can 't sing good though.

  • @TheJoeshmoer claire sued pink floyd saying she wrote this part and won

  • This was just what I needed tonight...to life my spirits...feeling down...we all have the blues these days I suppose...but nothing like a little pink floyd to bring you home.

  • ----------^============

  • Look at the first top rated comment, and then look at the second... hmm something aint right?!

  • @DickEnlargement Unfortunate juxtaposition is unfortunate.

  • @DickEnlargement seems perfect, kinda like the piece of music.

  • Well, i play the keys and my girl sings this. Guess i'm lucky then...

  • This was the outro to my cousin's funeral. He would have enjoyed it so much. R.I.P.

  • Comment removed

  • @LenyTome Can you not read? He was dead. Of course he couldn't enjoy it HE HAS NO BRAIN FUNCTION.

  • @Beriadanful Sorry to hear that, but glad at the same time because this song must had gotten tears in your cousin's eyes in heaven when he was listening it. And hopefully, a lot of peace too.

  • RIP Richard Wright. This is perhaps his greatest work.

  • listening to this song when im depressed at 4 in the morning send chills down my spine...

  • @metaprog46and2

I never said I was frightened of dying

  • I bet my US Navy Buddies that I could figure out how to play this tune in one Night...I won the bet in 1990. Unfortunately, we lost Miss Claire in 1973 and we lost Richard Wright in 2008. What a shame...

  • this is what you hear when you ascend to heaven

  • @supermanyourtube god has a direct drive turn table from the 70's with this album on vynil. "on the eight day i created this. and beer. and weed."

  • @blitzedburgh090 I doubt the beer thing since its a brewed from plants same with weed. But the Album he must of made on the 8th day its too great.

  • @billyjack95 that is true. hops and marijuana are cousin plants. thats why they accompany each other so well :)

  • @blitzedburgh090 Very true

  • The Great Gig in the Sky

    (Wright) 4:44

"And I am not frightened of dying, any time will do, I

don't mind. Why should I be frightened of dying?

There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime."

  • The "Top Comment" is in spanish? FUCK

  • sounds like sex.... no really it actually does

  • The phrase, "If you hear the whisper you're dying" appears in the online game World of Warcraft - it's spoken by a Nether Stalker on Celestial Ridge (level 68-70) just after you kill Wind Trader Marid.

  • Keyboards and Bass are my favorite part of the song, as well as the spoken quote near the start of the song... the singing gets a bit boring towards the end...

  • @ShroomsAndStuff actually the best music to listen when youre high is avant garde, free jazz/fusion

  • who is singing??

  • This is sublime (not the group either). Yes, rulex1996, who indeed? There are few, very few works in rock that equal this. I love this .

  • Who the f*ck needs lyrics...
