Clare Torry was the guest singer they brought in to sing on this, it was 1972 or 1973.
In 2004, she sued Pink Floyd and EMI saying she was only paid £30 which the standard flat Rate at the time for stand in studio work . The basis was that her contribution to "The Great Gig in the Sky" constituted co-authorship with keyboardist Richard Wright.
She won her case and got £8 Million and all releases after 2005 credit 'Richard Wright/Clare Torry' for the "Great Gig in the Sky" on album sleeves now.
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL VOICE hope i don't have to pay to listen to this music although i am registred, i mean that i have given my life to You Tube, talking about Pink Floyd for i've got everything or almost concerning them either on vinyl L.Ps or tapes but as internet is new to me just wanted to know how it works
@butterflyandme159 I don't know what you're thinking but in the boat where they wrote their songs they smoked more than just cigarettes. They said it themselves in a bbc documentary
@snauta123 for sure they din't suck their thumb but the only ones who were still alive in a recent BBC program they wanted to reassure the parents and grand parents they've become also, thismight be the reason for, what's his name again from Pink Floyd??? smoked myself for so long have forgotten his name, said they had never taken any stuff and that their songs had nothing to do with it, honnest that's what he said ha! ha! well never mind the woman's voice is beautifull don't you think
I don't care if you disagree but imo this is the greatest vocal performance any human can achieve. perfect combination of melody, technique, difficulty, and passion.
Listening to that song makes me think that man can achieve anything. How does the human mind come up with such a far out piece of music what part of the imagination generates such an unusual sound amazing.
@ZombieKiller1909 i don't think you can ever say anything is the best music ever - because of genre tastes. But certainly the best prog-rock album ever? (although to be honest probably the only prog album i love)
@ZombieKiller1909 It's hard to suggest a better candidate. It's generally regarded as a milestone within modern music and I can certainly hear why. As someone else said, it's hard to compare genres though.
@pigsontherun Yeah, they put on an epic show. There are a lot of emotional responses to this music on this post, which are a clue to it's quality. Btw, apparently Radiohead got annoyed when they were compared to Pink Floyd. Imagine! Arrogant twats:-) No, but they are carrying the same torch I think (even if they don't).
This track is so amazing. It gets stuck in my head and I'm like, "damn, I wish I was listening to it right now!" And then I do and I'm happy. :D This chick's voice is soooo gooooooooood.
ive been a floyd fan all of my life 53years,been to 18 concerts, and when i do die i also want this song played at my funeral full blast, what a way to go out thanks claire
Listening to the radio when this song came on. I said "God, I love this song!", and my friend, who was sitting next to me went, "Why? Its just some chick yelling into a microphone while some music plays". I killed him.
@The123tanner This song when it was recorded by Claire Torry, the producers and the band members told her to Sing every single emotion. Angry, happy, sad, scared, calm etc. It is rather interesting and it was recorded once and only once and Claire was totally embarrassed. Roger Waters said "This is Brilliant."
can't imagine what it must of been like there in studio when this chick lights this track up...must been of been mind blowing... is there anything better than creating music?
@rankooodle Funny you mention it. The singer for this song, for which name I cannot remember right now, actually didn't like what she had done, and thought it wasn't gonna go anywhere. She thought she did a terrible job because all the instructions that were given to her were "just think of death and sing to the microphone", and precisely for that, it is my favorite Pink Floyd song. You may disagree with me, and that's fine with me. I love all Pink Floyd songs, anyways. :)
@bmwmv8 Yeah, her name is Claire Torry. I looked her up on Google and she looked like some one from the Brady Bunch. But doesn't mean she can 't sing good though.
This was just what I needed tonight...to life my spirits...feeling down...we all have the blues these days I suppose...but nothing like a little pink floyd to bring you home.
@Beriadanful Sorry to hear that, but glad at the same time because this song must had gotten tears in your cousin's eyes in heaven when he was listening it. And hopefully, a lot of peace too.
I bet my US Navy Buddies that I could figure out how to play this tune in one Night...I won the bet in 1990. Unfortunately, we lost Miss Claire in 1973 and we lost Richard Wright in 2008. What a shame...

Top comment in Spanish says: "Like one to smoke and to give the sight in the Lava Lamps!!" I learned Spanish because I was afraid of America being taken over by Mexicans. I am currently learning Chinese (For the same reason).
The phrase, "If you hear the whisper you're dying" appears in the online game World of Warcraft - it's spoken by a Nether Stalker on Celestial Ridge (level 68-70) just after you kill Wind Trader Marid.
Keyboards and Bass are my favorite part of the song, as well as the spoken quote near the start of the song... the singing gets a bit boring towards the end...

@GameOf2Halves pink floyd is better than beatles in everyway.
beatles just did music but pink floyd made a mix of music, emotions, visual arts and drama.
that's why i'm a pink floyd fan instead of being a fan of porcupine tree, radiohead, led zeppelin, etc.
the bands i said made great music though, but pink floyd is better than every band i know
