Cecil Taylor taught music at my college a few years before I entered. When he left, he loaded up a piano that belonged to the school and hauled it away. The administration declined to pursue the matter because they considered it an honor to have Cecil Taylor steal their piano.
I know what you mean. I downloaded Unit structures a while back and said, "well, I'm not sure about this." Then I cranked it up a few weeks ago and just the man's piano playing alone blew me away, not to mention the entire ensemble he had organized. And this is the first time seeing him play solo. Holy crap. This blow my mind. I mean, I was just watching various pianists play Scriabin compositions. Let them Richter or Horowitz outdo Cecil Taylor!!
i know. after i saw this I downloaded a bunch of his music and some is solo. I have this bookmarked and of course will watch it now that I'm on the page
if you mean this in a derogatory way, i can't possibly see what you mean. Please tell me why a man that can so deftly and dramatically work his way around the piano is 'sick.' The music is discordant. A little known fact: there was a movement in art known as 'modernism.' But, how can a music critic such as yourself be expected to keep up with such things?
and how can an asshole such as yourself be expected to keep up with the slang of our times? and i think cecil would have been bummed out to hear you label him as something so antiquated as modernism--but thanks for bringing me back to this video, its been a couple years and it really is great
Hey trev., I know the term sick. Notice I said 'if' in a derogatory sense. Sorry for the assumption. It's just the word by itself sounded like an insult. Also, I know Cecil Taylor along with any other artist that is connected to art in vital ways has understood, but moved beyond Modernism, it's just that these people here sometimes can't stand anything that isn't sweet. My fault and you're right on, tho I'm not as obtuse as I sounded. The Modernism comment was only to address the discordance.

Being ignorant as I am, I'd never heard of Cecil Taylor before today.
Only now do I see the error of my ways.
This man is brilliant!
